2 Photoshop 1 Painting Brushes Panel Brush Tip Shape Brushes Panel Scattering Scatter Randomizes number and placement of marks in a brush stroke. Brushes Panel Transfer Angle/Roundness Adjust these settings for more calligraphic strokes. Brush Preview Changes as you adjust settings. Brushes Panel Texture Count Number of brush marks at each spacing interval. Texture Texture patterns available. Blending Mode Specifies how the brush tip and the pattern combine. Brushes Panel Bristle Brush Brushes Panel Shape Dynamics Bristle Qualities Settings that mirror real-world brush qualities. Brush Preview A live brush preview appears showing brush dynamics as you paint. Size/Angle/Roundness Jitter Jitter randomizes the chosen property based on the control method chosen. Brushes Panel Dual Brush Brushes Panel Color Dynamics Dual Brush Combines two tips to create brush marks. The first brush is chosen under Brush Tip Shape. Foreground/Background Jitter Sets how paint varies from foreground to background. HSB Jitter Varies the particular color quality. Enter HSB in the Photoshop Help menu for info. Purity Varies the saturation of the color. Opacity Jitter Varies opacity in a brush stroke. Other Brush Options Flow Jitter Varies flow in a brush stroke. Wetness and Mix Jitter The two effects associated with the Mixer Brush Tool. Noise: Adds additional randomness. Wet Edges: Simulates watercolor effect with paint building up on edges. Airbrush: Simulates airbrush effect, building up gradual tones. Smoothing: Produces a smoother curve when painting. Protect Texture: Applies same pattern and scale to all strokes using a pattern preset typically used to simulate painting on a canvas.
3 Photoshop 1 Adjustments Histogram Panel Dodge Tool Lightens pixels. Burn Tool Darkens pixels Sponge Tool Desaturates pixels. Shadows Midtones Highlights Shows distribution of tonal levels in the image. The higher the peak the more pixels in that range. Clipping Warning Indicates that pixel detail is clipping, with 100% black or 0% white pixels. Clipping is occurring in the highlights of the histogram shown. Image > Adjustments Brightness/Contrast: Makes simple adjustments to Brightness and Contrast of image. Levels: Adjusts color and tonal balance in Shadow, Highlight and Midtone areas. Curves: Similar to Levels, allowing more precise control over particular tonal ranges. Exposure: Simulates camera exposure controls. Vibrance: Increases saturation more in unsaturated areas and less in already saturated areas. Ideal for preserving skin tones. Hue/Saturation: Adjusts Hue (color) separate from Saturation (intensity), as well as Lightness (brightness). Color Balance: Changes overall mixture of colors Black & White: Allows greater control when converting an image to Grayscale. Note: your image will still be RGB, but totally desaturated after use. Photo Filter: Simulates a camera filter. Channel Mixer: Creative color mixing using Channels. Invert: Inverts brightness of pixels, creating a negative effect. Posterize: Reduces the number of tonal levels. Threshold: Converts image to a high-contrast black & white image. Gradient Map: Colorizes an image using a Gradient Blend. Selective Color: Allows adjustment of particular ranges of color. Shadow/Highlight: Refined adjustment of tone and color. HDR Toning: Used to adjust HDR (High Dynamic Range) imagery. Desaturate: Simple desaturation of image - see Black & White. Match Color: Adjusts color to match a separate image or layer. Replace Color: Replaces color range with chosen color.
4 Photoshop 1 Adjustments Image > Adjustments > Levels Image > Adjustments >Shadows/Highlights Input Levels The three sliders adjust shadows, midtones and highlights. Amount: Controls the intensity of the adjustment. Tonal Width: Controls the range of tones affected by the adjustment. Output levels The left slider lightens the darkest shadows and the right slider darkens the lightest highlights. Image > Adjustments > Curves 0% 25% 50% 75% 100% Input/Output Levels The horizontal axis represents the current tonal levels, and the vertical axis represents the change in tone. Eyedroppers The black and white eyedroppers set the darkest shadow and lightest highlight when clicked on a color in the image. The gray eyedropper sets the neutral (gray) tone, shifting color cast. Curve points Clicking on the curve adds a curve point. Moving the point shifts the levels of the image in the direction moved. In the curve shown, the highlight point (0% gray) is unchanged. The 25% gray point has been shifted up, lightening this range of tone. The 75% gray point is shifted down, darkening this range of tone. The shadow point (100% gray) is unchanged. Info Panel Shows color values where cursor is hovering over the image. When making adjustments, the color values are split as shown, indicating before and after values. Radius: Controls the pixel radius around the area of effect. Recommended procedure Start with a Radius value of 30. Choose a small Amount value, but greater than zero. Slide the Tonal Width slider and observe the effect. If the change is too subtle, increase the Amount setting and try again. When a desirable result is achieved, slide the Radius and observe the effect, there may be a slight improvement. Adjustments Color Correction: Adjusts the colors in the changed portion of the image. Do this adjustment last. Midtone Contrast: Adjusts the contrast in midtones. Black Clip: Sets the acceptable amount of shadow clipping. White Clip: Sets the acceptable amount of highlight clipping.

Content Aware Compares nearby image content to seamlessly fill the selection, realistically maintaining key details. Patch Tool Repairs pixels in a selection sampling an area of the image. Red Eye Tool Repairs red-eye caused by camera flashes. Healing Brush Options Source Sampled refers to the sample area determined by option-clicking. Pattern uses a pattern as it s sample source. Aligned Sample point maintains the same position in relation to brush. Sample Determines the layer(s) to be sampled. Clone Stamp Tool Paints with a sample of the image. Patch Tool Options Blur Tool Blurs hard edges. Sharpen Tool Sharpens soft edges. Smudge Tool Smudges pixels as if made of wet paint. Selection Options Controls behavior of successive Patch tool selections: adding, subtracting or merging with the previous selection. Clone Stamp Options Patch Source samples pixels being dragged to. Destination samples pixels being dragged from. Transparent Used to sample texture only instead of replacing patched area. Helpful Key Commands Change Brush Size: [ or ] Set Opacity: number keys (1=10%, 0=100%, 4 then 5 in quick succession = 45%) Toggle Brush Panel Toggle Clone Source Panel Opacity Blends sampled pixels with background. Aligned Sample point maintains the same position in relation to brush. Change Brush Hardness: shift-[ or shift-]
