Paste Image > Duplicate Layer> Name Quick Selection Save As: YourInitials_selection-tools.psd NOTE: View the marching ants approaching (but not surrounding) the edges of Dee s hair When selecting hair, be sure to select all areas except for the parts of the hair where the background shows through. The [ Select Subject ] button In the Quick Selection tool options, you may select the Select Subject Button, then follow rules for subtracting pixels from quick selection (to deselect edges of hair) b. Select Quick Tool (W) c. For the sake of this lesson, we will review Quick Selection rules (for subjects that may have more complex backgrounds) NOTE: You may adjust the brush sizes to gain more control of your addition to selection [ = decrease brush size ] = increase brush size d. Place Mouse over the subject you wish to remove from the background e. Click + Drag over the subject f. If you make a mistake during your selection: [ Hold command+d ], release keys, then left-click to drag selection again OR follow rules below for quick selection: RULES FOR QUICK SELECTION 1. To add to selection: Hold shift + click and drag around area you wish to add to your current selection W (option 1) W (option 1) 2. To subtract from selection: Hold alt + click and drag around the area you wish to subtract from your current selection 3. You may opt to use the buttons located in the tool options to add or subtract pixels to/from your selection: Revised

3 4. Once the quick selection is finalized Click Select and Mask Button. NOTE: Auto-Enhance Reduces roughness and blockiness in the selection boundary. Auto-Enhance automatically flows the selection further toward image edges and applies some of the edge refinement you can apply manually in the Refine Edge dialog with the Contrast and Radius options. URL Reference: HelpxAdobe f. Since we are selecting around the subject and hair, we have to ensure the selection does not include the edges. g. We will use the [ Select and Mask ] button to open the Select and Mask Properties Panel. In this panel will be a Refine Edge tool for detecting edges. Once we refine the edge and modify the mask (if needed), we will output our selection as a new layer with mask; which will give the appearance of the subject being removed from its previous background (since a mask is not destructive) h. In the properties panel, ensure Overlay is selected i. In the tools panel, Choose the Refine Edge Brush Tool [ R ] and drag over the edges of hair. If properly selected the edge of hair will no longer appear red. NOTE: If any part of your subject is red, choose the Brush Tool [ B ] > Expand detection area (Look in the tool options and click on +) > then drag over selection Revised

4 k. Click Decontaminate Colors, this should trigger the Output To create a New Layer with Layer Mask from your selection. Then Click OK CS6/ Early Release CC f. Click The Refine Edge Button g. In the Refine Mask Panel, Go to the View Mode section and choose Layer Reveal. h. In the Edge Detection Box, Check the Smart Radius Box and increase/decrease radius, and toggle the Smart Radius Checkbox [ to see results] i. Ensure the Edge Detection button is selected j. Click and drag your brush ONLY over the stray hairs (A transparent green highlight will follow the motion of your brush). k. Switch View mode to On Layers (to view your new selection) l. Change the attribute values according to the image below: Revised

5 m. Experiment with Adjust Edge n. In the Output Box, check Decontaminate Colors and set the Output To: New Layer with Layer Mask o. Click OK p. See Mask Created In Layer Panel NOTE: If you are unhappy with the results, Right-Click the Mask and Click Refine Mask. Change the values to your liking and Click OK In this image there are a number of ways to improve hair selection and refine the results. We will: 1. Create a solid background and move it below the layer we re working on (Quick Selection). 2. On the Quick Selection layer, Select ONLY the stray hairs with the Lasso Tool (not ears or face) 3. Copy hair to its own layer: Go to Menu Bar > Layer > New > Layer via copy. Note the layer copy intensifies the hair edges. 4. Rename the Layer copy Hair Revised

6 OPTIONAL REMOVING BACKGROUND FROM COMPLEX EDGES & HAIR [CS4 and <]: The Use of background eraser may be required for hair over complex backgrounds if CC is not available/ or the results are not to your liking. a. Choose Background Eraser Tool (E - option 2) b. In Tool Options Bar type the following values: - Brush Size: 20px - Hardness: 100% OR based on subject - Sample Once Button is selected (hover over tool options to view the titles) - Limits: Discontiguous - Tolerance: 40% or less c. Click and hold cursor on background color closest to your subject s hair edges and drag to erase background color BLENDING HAIR INTO BACKGROUNDS: You may use the 1. Burn tool (Darken) 2. Dodge tool (Lighten) 3. Blur or SmudgeTool (To soften edges) 4. Sharpen Tool (To sharpen edges) 5. Eraser Tool with low Opacity to treat your new edges and blend into the background OR (for this specific image) 1. On the Hair layer, Click fx (at the bottom of the layers panel) and add an inner glow (same as hair color) 2. On the Hair layer, locate the word Effects 3. Right-Click Effects and choose > Create Layer Revised

7 4. Name the new layer Hair Glow 5. Choose Multiply Blend Mode for Hair Glow 6. You may use the Eraser Tool with a soft brush, at low opacity to blend the Hair Glow layer edges with the Hair Layer. 7. After blending, Merge the Hair Glow, Hair, and Quick Selection Layer (Select the 3 layers, Right- Click, and choose Merge Layers. 8. Use Dodge or Burn tools to blend hair to background. 2. Add a Background to Your New Selection See Video [.mp4,.webm,.ogv ] 1. Go to Google Images > Search for image background of your choice > Click on Tools > Click on Size > Larger than Right-Click [control+click] > Copy Image 3. Paste into your document 4. Move layer under subject 5. Note how the hair looks in new environment 6. Use technique to blend hair into setting BLENDING HAIR INTO BACKGROUNDS: You may use one or more of the following tools: 1. Clone Tool On Subject layer, you may clone parts of the hair with more detail and brush the edges with your sample. In addition to the lesson you learned last week with the clone tool [option+click] to sample You may also rotate [Shift+option+ < OR >] OR nudge [direction arrows] to align your clone sample perfectly FIRST you option+click, then you choose the area you wish to change and use one of the above options 2. Lasso Tool a. Select a part of the hair > b. Make New Layer via Copy [command+j] c. [Control+click] Choose Create Clipping Mask (This will allow the hair to have more detail than the blur effect it may have) Revised

8 3. Burn tool (Darken) or Dodge (Lighten) tool. Go to Menu Bar > Layer > New Layer > Choose overlay blend mode > 50% gray, then use the dodge and burn tools to lighten/darken areas you wish to manipulate: 4. Blur or SmudgeTool (To soften edges): 5. Sharpen Tool (To sharpen edges) 6. Mask Layer (Use brush with low opacity) to treat your new edges and blend into the background Here s a crazy option, but for special occasions, it sometimes works 7. On the Subject layer, Click fx (at the bottom of the layers panel) and add an inner glow (same as hair color) a. On the Subject layer, locate the word Effects b. Right-Click Effects and choose > Create Layer c. Name the new layer Hair Glow d. Choose Multiply Blend Mode for Hair Glow e. You may use the Eraser Tool with a soft brush, at low opacity to blend the Hair Glow layer edges with the Hair Layer and remove parts of the image you don t need. f. After blending, Merge all Layers with Subject + Effects (Hold Shift, Select the layers, Right- Click, and choose Merge Layers. g. Use Dodge or Burn tools to blend hair to background (If needed). 9 c. Marquee Tool Step# Description Action Shortcut Key (Win) (Mac) 1 Cut or Copy a part of an image with standard shape: (The Marquee Tool) COPY FILE FROM: (right-click copy image) a. Open New File > Paste Image > Save As: YourInitials_selection-tools.psd b. Select Elliptical Marquee Tool c. Hold Shift + place mouse at upper left of earth d. Drag to lower right of earth e. Use the nudge keys [direction keypad] to center the selection NOTE: If you are unhappy with selection, hit (Crtl+D) or (Cmd+D) to deselect OR Go to Menu Bar> Select > Transform Selection and adjust the height and width of the selection control (same function as transform tool for shapes) Once you are happy with the transformation, Hit return f. In the Menu Bar Choose > Layer > New > Layer Via Copy [command+j] NOTE: New layer created, so you may delete the previous one g. Rename Layer: LEFT EYE h. CLICK the Move Tool [ V ] i. On the Canvas area, hover over the image of the left eye j. Duplicate the left eye. While hovering over the image, hold down the option [alt] key, then left-click + drag the eye k. Rename Layer: RIGHT EYE Ctrl +J Ctrl + S V command + J command + S V Revised

10 d. Lasso Tool Step# Description Action Shortcut Key (Win) (Mac) 1. Cut or Copy a part of an image with unique shape: (The Lasso Tool) COPY FILE FROM: a. Paste image into document & Free Transform the layer to appear on canvas 1. [command+t, 2. Hold Shift + Drag one corner towards center, 3. Hit return to accept the new size b. Select Circular Lasso Tool c. Loosely trace around lips (allow some skin on the outside for blending) NOTE: If you are unhappy with selection, hit (Crtl+D) or (Cmd+D) to deselect, then retrace again, OR [Hold Shift + Drag Mouse] to add pixels to selection [Hold option/alt + Drag Mouse] to subtract pixels from selection If you prefer, you may also add/subtract pixels by choosing from the toolbar options: d. In the toolbars options, click on the Select and Mask button e. In properties panel, choose the On Layers View mode: f. You may adjust different properties to observe the effect of changing their values Revised

11 g. For the Output Settings, Output to: New Layer and Mask then [Hit Return] h. Rename the Layer: BIG MOUTH e. Magic Wand Step# Description Action Shortcut Key (Win) (Mac) THE MAGIC WAND TOOL (Another Option for Selection) a. Search Google Images for any object you wish to add (ensure it has a plain background) b. Copy/Paste image onto the canvas c. Choose the Magic Wand Tool [ W ] d. Click on the blank area of the layer e. In the toolbar options, locate Tolerance, and change value to different values and see the different outcomes f. Inverse the selection [Menu Bar > Select > Inverse] g. At the bottom of the layer panel, local the layer mask button and click it. Another option is to use the Select and Mask button instead of manually creating a mask. h. Feather or blur the layer if needed Revised

12 II. OTHER STEPS OR COMPOSITING MULTIMEDIA TOOLS :: CLASS NOTES STEPS FOR COMPOSITING :: 1. Sketch a composition 2. Select Objects from two or more ORIGINAL* images ( * May use images with free use license, OR change +50% of image and credit originals ) 3. Move images to the main composite PSD 4. Transform images to ideal scale & move them to position 5. Adjust the Hue, Saturation, Brightness, and Contrast of multiple objects 6. Add Filters, Patterns, and Blend Modes to attain the ULTIMATE CONCEPT! Revised

13 :: Tips for Compositing & Working with Multiple Photoshop Documents (PSDs) a. Moving and Laying Out Objects To move a layer using the Layer Panel Go to Layer Panel > Select Layer > Use Arrow Keys (Hold Shift + Arrow Keys for Larger Increments) To move a group using the Layer Panel Go to Layer Panel > Select Group Folder > Use Arrow Keys (Hold Shift + Arrow Keys for Larger Increments) To move a layer or group using the Move Tool (V) / Directly on the Canvas Go to Toolbar > Select Move Tool (V) > In Tool Options, Click Auto Select Checkbox, then Select Layer or Group > Move Mouse over Canvas > Click Desired Object (Located Directly on Canvas) > Drag Layer (or Group) Object to New Location on Canvas b. Canvas Size Change: To change Canvas Size, Go To: a. Menu Bar > Image > Canvas Size b. Change height, width, or both c. To ADD pixels equally to surrounding sides, simply click OK d. To ADD pixels to the BOTTOM, press UP ARROW, click OK e. To ADD pixels to the TOP, press DOWN ARROW, click OK f. To ADD pixels to the LEFT, press RIGHT ARROW, click OK g. To ADD pixels to the RIGHT, press LEFT ARROW, click OK Revised

14 c. Duplicate/Move layers or groups to other documents by: 1. Select the layer or group (Make sure the layer is visible and highlighted in blue) 2. Right-Click [ command+click (for MAC) ] > Duplicate Layer.., or Group > In Destination drop-down, choose New OR The.psd with your final composite image. d. Layer Effects and Filters (Add Filter to Smart Object) e. Dodge & Burn Tools 1. Copy the Layer you wish to add highlights and shadows to NOTE: Some tutorials instruct viewers to use the dodge & burn tools on a 50% solid gray layer. The gray layer dulls the original image layer. If you wish to maintain your original color and contrast, copy the layer you wish to use the dodge and burn tool on. 2. Use the Dodge Tool to lighten a portion of your image 3. Use the Burn Tool to darken a portion of your image f. Blur, Sharpen, & Smudge Tool 1. Copy the Layer you wish to smudge, blur, or sharpen NOTE: This duplicate layer is created to preserve your work. 2. Use the Smudge Tool to smudge pixels in your image 3. Use the Blur Tool to blur (soften) in of your image 4. Use the Sharpen Tool to sharpen (hard edge/texture) pixels in your image Revised
