1 ART 130 / Photography I Mulligan Printing at the Digital Arts Lab at Drew University PRINTING WITH THE 4900 You have been working on your image file in Photoshop and are ready to print. Here s what you need to remember: 1. You need to make changes to your working file, just to print it, that you don t want to save over your large working file. Therefore, before you do anything else go to File à Save As, and save file with _PRINT at the end in your nested PRINT folder. Save as a TIFF file. 2. Now you can safely make changes to the file. Flatten, change the mode, resize and save. a. Flatten layers: Layer à Flatten Image b. Reduce image to 8 bit: Image à Mode à 8 bit c. Establish correct print size: Image à Image Size à Make sure resolution is 300. Then enter longest length of your print. If you re making an 8.5 x 11, then enter 10 inches on the width for a horizontal; 10 inches for height in vertical image. Let other dimensions fall where they will. d. Save your file again. 3. Load correct paper in print PRINT SIDE DOWN. Carefully move guides in place to support paper feed. Not too loose, not too tight. Make sure printer says Ready and is set for Sheet not Roll. 4. Open Image Print. Place image file in Image Print by dragging or File à Open and choose your PRINT file. a. Toolbar: Rotate image if needed b. Toolbar: Center Image (you may need to re-center after you select correct paper size and margins). 5. Go To View à Dashboard. Check Print settings. Here is a screen shot for the 4900.

3 6. Remember to hit APPLY after you have chosen the Printer Profile! It has to show as blue text above before it is truly set. 7. Hit Print. 8. Open SpoolFace. Choose correct printer. Note: you may need to go to Computers à and then choose as the host. This tells your computer to print through the main printer. 9. Watch the SpoolFace queue to make sure your job goes through.

4 PRINTING WITH THE P5000 The P5000 has a small glitch regarding centering images on the sheet. You should have CENTER MARGINS selected BEFORE loading your image, along with all of these settings. Once you load your image, rotate and center as usual and then UNCHECK Center Margins. The two dialog boxes should look like this:

7 Please note jobs sent to the P5000 go directly to SAVED JOBS in SpoolFace if there are no errors; if there is an error, it will appear in ACTIVE JOBS where you have to drag it into Saved Jobs and then the Trash icon and then Unpause the Queue as usual. TROUBLE SHOOTING: The host (instructor) computer has to be ON to print from the other machines. The ImagePrint dongle (small silver USB tool) needs to be plugged into host. If you don t see your job in the SpoolFace queue, make sure you have the correct printer selected. Make sure to select the correct paper profile in profile valet and click APPLY. Profile isn t properly set until blue text to right of PRINTER PROFILE is correct. If print says, Load Roll Paper the file was sent with wrong paper settings. If a job is sent and results in an error, move it out of the active jobs queue by dragging it to window below and then to the trash. It will hold up other jobs if not. Redo and resend job. If a job has an error and pauses the print queue, you may need to uncheck Pause Printer Queue in SpoolFace under the Queue dropdown window. If you press print and get the message No Printer Found go to Computers and choose in SpoolFace. If you press print and NOTHING happens at all (no file in SpoolFace when correct printer is chosen, no error messages), in Image Print find Preferences and check: Printer Directly to Print Server. If you are getting black ink marks on the edges of your prints, ask the lab monitor to set the platen gap on the printer to wide in the menu. If the printer says INK LOW, do NOT change the ink. Ink can only be changed by an instructor or monitor and only when it is completely empty. It may say INK LOW for a long time before it is actually empty.
