1 How ALEKS Works After you have registered in ALEKS, you will get a brief introduction to ALEKS and then you will be given a quick tutorial on how to enter answers in ALEKS:

2 After you have completed the tutorial, you will be given an initial knowledge check by ALEKS to determine what topics you already know so ALEKS can customize your learning. This is to be done on your own so ALEKS can accurately determine what topics you know.

3 Be sure to read the instructions carefully before starting the Initial Knowledge Check.

4 Use only the calculator that is provided by ALEKS. If no calculator is provided by ALEKS, then you are not to use one. Below is an example when a calculator is not to be used. No Calculator Allowed. Sometimes you will see this icon and sometimes it will be blank.

6 Once you have finished your initial knowledge check, ALEKS will take you to your pie showing you what topics you know compared to all the topics in the course. The non-gray regions are the topics that you already know and the light gray regions are the ones to learn.

7 ALEKS will only give you the topics that you are ready to learn. As you master a topic, it gets added to your Pie making the non-gray region in the section grow and opening up more topics that you are ready to learn. When you click continue, it takes you to the home screen. Click on "START MY PATH." ********* Click here to beginning your learning

8 ALEKS will immediately take you to a worked out question with an explanation. Read through the example and then click on "Start." ####### ##

9 If you know or think you know how to do the problem, work it out and enter the answer. You will need to click on "Check" to check your answer. If you get it right, ALEKS will show you the solution and have your try another problem like it. If you get the answer wrong, ALEKS will give you another opportunity to correct it. If you still get it wrong, ALEKS will take you to the "Explanation" page where it will show you how to do the problem. ######### # # # # # # If you do not know how to do a problem, click on the "Explanation" button directly to see how to solve the problem.

10 Below is what the explanation screen looks like: ######### # # # # # # IMPORTANT: Before your teacher or a tutor will help you, you must be in Explain mode. This ensures that ALEKS knows that you are seeking help and need more practice on this topic. You can click on anything underlined to get a more detailed explanation of that word or concept. On some problems, you will have links to the right side for videos or notes or a link at the bottom for another explanation.

12 As you enter answers in correctly, you will see some green bars on the top right side indicating your progress to mastering a topic. Just click on "Next" to continue. ####### #######

After you answer a problem correctly several times in a row, then ALEKS will add that topic to your Pie. Click on "Continue My Path" to move to the next topic.

Once you complete an objective, you will be given another knowledge check before you can move onto the next objective. If complete all the objectives for a particular week before the due date, ALEKS will allow you to work in "Ready to Learn" mode until the next set of objectives open up. In that mode, you can go to any available topic to work on.

14 If you decide that you are in a topic that you do not want to learn just yet, click on the down triangle to see all the topics you are ready to learn. ###### ###

15 You can then choose a different topic to work one. The topics listed in the windows are all of the topics you are ready to learn in that section. You can navigate to different topics by using the slider bar. #########

In this mode, you can also review the material that you previously learned by clicking on the down arrow next to "filter" and then selecting "Review.

24 Message Center is ALEKS system. This is where you can check your in ALEKS. Gradebook allows you to see your current average in the course Reports is where you can see various reports including the total time in ALEKS. If you click on Reports, it will take you to the Reports screen.

25 If you click on Reports, you will come to a screen that looks like this. ##### The time on this report is by week. It resets every Monday.

26 To get the total in the course, click on "View Full Report"

27 On the next screen, click on "All."
