Sizing Digital Images by Pixel Dimensions For Digital Competitions There are several methods of correctly sizing a digital image to meet specific pixel dimensions, i.e wide by 1080 high is the maximum size for our club competitions, setting size for printing is different and not covered here. It is important to note that the horizontal and vertical dimensions are set and must be applied that way, they must never be transverse. In Photoshop by setting the longest side the system will take care of the other side so that the image perspective is not distorted. If you have a Landscape image you would set the horizontal at 1920 pixels and Photoshop will set the height automatically, the height must not exceed 1080 pixels. If you have a portrait image, then you would set the height at 1080 pixels and Photoshop will adjust the width automatically but must not exceed 1920 pixels. You must still check the maximum height and width after making your changes to ensure they are within the limits of acceptance. In Lightroom by setting 1920px wide by 1080px high in the Export dialog box (see procedure below) the maximum pixel size of the image within this range will be obtained and correct image perspective will be also be maintained. The methods described below are the most common used to easily set the size of a digital image for digital competition entry. Method 1, Photoshop Image Image Size Open you image in Photoshop, go to Image in the top menu bar, go down to Image Size, The image dimensions box will appear. Make sure the connector is linked to both the Width and Height boxes. Set to Pixels Set the longest side depending on the image perspective Set Resolution at 300 Make sure the connector link is on, that ensures the image perspective stays the same
If the image is a Landscape then set the width to 1920, Photoshop will automatically set the height to a size that prevents the image perspective from changing. Set the Resolution to 300. Check the Height and if it is higher than 1080 pixels, change it to 1080 and the width will be adjusted automatically, click Save. View the images in Bridge so that you can check the dimensions and the image size, if the size is greater than 2MB, go back and lower the resolution to say 240 and save as a JPG this will reduce the file size. You can also reduce the quality size of the JPG when saving this will also reduce the image size. Adjust the Quality slider to reduce the saved size of your image. Method 2, Bridge Tools Photoshop Image Processor RESIZING AN IMAGE USING PHOTOSHOP WITH BRIDGE Bridge is a component of Photoshop and it provides a quick and simple way of resizing one or more images and saving them as a JPEG, PSD or Tiff file. 1, Open Bridge
2, Locate the folder containing your images ( Use Filmstrip mode for easy review of your images ) 3, Select the single image that you want to resize and convert, or hold down the Shift key and select multiple images. The file type can be anything from a Raw file to a Photoshop PSD file, or JPG. You can select one file or multiple files to resize. 4, With the images selected choose Tools Photoshop and Image Processor from that menu 5, A new window will open Your image is already selected Select Save in Same Location Select Save as JPEG Select the QUALITY Size that you want, 12 is large files. Set the WIDTH and the HEIGHT that you want the image to be If you want to convert the image to srgb select as required 6, Select RUN to process the image/s, they will appear as a separate file within the original image file. 7, Open this file and check the size of the JPEG files and that the size matches your requirements. See the work flow below: Open Bridge and locate the folder with your images
Select the image or any number of images that you want to size and then from the Tools tag select, Photoshop and then Image Processor The Image Resizing window appears, select your options and click RUN Set to Save in Same Location Select Save as JPEG Set the image Width and Height in pixels Set the Quality, ie 12 = Larger size image Select to srgb only if that is a requirement Select Save in Same Location Select Save as JPG Set the maximum Width and Height When finished select RUN to process the image The JPEG files will now appear in a separate folder called JPEG in the file where your images are.
Open the new folder and check the size of your images, if they are still larger than required resize them as a JPG with a lower Quality size. Method 3, Lightroom Library/Develop Export In Lightroom after you have processed your image you can use the Export function from the Library or the Develop module to save your image to a folder on your desktop or nominated file. See the image below for instruction on the Lightroom process. The Lightroom Export Panel
Select where the image is to be saved to Tick if you still want Lightroom to view the resized image in the new location You can rename your image here Set Image format to JPEG and Colour space to SRGB (if required), quality st Critical step: Limit file size to 2000K ie 2MB Pixels per inch This is the 2 nd critical step, for Club comp always set Width to 1920 px and height to 1080 px and Resolution to 300 pixels per inch. Set the Metadata as required Apply sharpening for improved screen projection Click Export to send the JPG file to your nominated location Lightroom will correctly adjust the perspective of the image
