2 The Focal Point November 2004 %H0G/N H0 V83!D,J H0 Adobe Photoshop A technique for defining depth to your artwork: Make the objects that are farther away appear out of focus, and the objects that are near sharp and crisp. This technique is for drawing attention to objects in the foreground of your image by slightly blurring the background. This adds depth and dimension to your artwork, as well as focusing attention. To do this, put a selection around the area you want the focus, add a 10-pixel Feather (Option-Command-D/Alt-Control-D), Inverse the Selection (from the select menu or Shift-Command-I/ Shift-Control-I), then apply your blur (Filter-Blur-Gaussian) Adobe Photoshop Layers and Adjustment layers Layers are like transparent sheets that contain image elements that you can stack above the background image you are viewing. The images on the layers can vary in density. That way, you can add a picture of say a bird to a landscape picture. The bird is on a separate layer, so you can still move it around and work on it without touching the background picture of the landscape. When you finally flatten the layers, the upper layers are dropped on the bottom background layer and are merged into and become part of the bottom image. Adjustment layers are layers that do not contain image elements, but adjustment commands like 'Levels'. An Adjustment layer acts just like putting a filter in front of your camera lens. You have color filters, contrast filters, neutral density filters, graduated filters, etc. They generally have an overall effect on the entire film frame. Two researchers at Harvard Medical School, say Rembrandt's many self-portraits reveal that his eyes are focused in slightly different directions, depriving him of the ''stereo" effect that makes vision three-dimensional. 3 The Focal Point November 2004 %H0G/N H0 V83!D,J H0 F.R4Q3W9L Q3X:H0G/ Fun with Optics Here's a beginning: I made some 35mm portraits with a magnifying Glass, it produced some interesting, soft and diffused images. I removed the lens from my SLR and simply hand held the magnifying glass out in front of the camera body and used auto exposure. You might try improvising a light blocking tube and f-stop to sharpen it up. I had some success using a paper towel tube taped to the camera body to help shield the stray light and I used a sheet of black paper with a hole cut in the center at 1/2 the diameter of the magnifying glass. I do not know why, but all magnifying glasses seem to be f/2 and the 1/2 diameter size hole results in an f/4 aperture. Also head for your local Wal-Mart or drug store. Buy the cheapest reading glasses they have. I have seen them for $5.00. A 1.00 diaopter is 1000mm. 2 diaopters is 500mm and so on, then put them back to back to make a symetrical lens. So if you stick two 500mm ones together you will get 250mm lens. I use duct tape, cardboard, a cardboard tube and black paper to make it all happen. Ansel Adams A fancier approach for large format is to take an achromat doublet from one of the Optics suppliers like Edmund Optics or similar, mount it in a shutter, mount it behind the shutter, on the film side. You will be surprised regarding the outcome, how good it is. The lens should have a diameter of about 1 inch or similar and should have a focal length of about 5 inches for 4x5 to start. 5 From the Program Coordinator The Focal Point November 2004 The Oct. 14th "people on the streets" program had a very good showing of images. Thanks to all who participated. Our substitute judge, Gordon Risk, did a fine job of selecting the 4 top images. The winning images were: 1st "Lions on Parade" by Gary Faulkner 2nd "Boating" by Lewis Katz 3rd "Central Park" by Lewis Katz 4th "The Trombone Player" by Gary Faulkner Each winner received a ribbon and a $5.00 gift certificate to Service Photo, who donated the 4 certificates. I hope all that participated enjoyed trying something different and those who viewed the program did as well. Watch for a new assignment/program announcement in the near future! This site may have been listed before, there is so much good information to gain from visiting this site it bears repeating. From the Editor I am thinking about a trip to Nova Scotia in May anyone interested? Leave on May 21 return on May 28. Air travel to Maine then rent and drive to destination. I will be doing some research on this idea. The program for Nov. 11th will feature photographer Joe Giordano his photo work is nighttime and is working on a book titled "American Darkness". Joe has two images of Baltimore that are in the Library of Congress collection. 5
