Art and the creative process is an integral part of science and technology. In this class we'll gleefully ignore "traditional" boundaries between these subjects. Led by plant scientist and nonfiction writer Robyn Perrin, this engaging class is perfect for the curious and the creative.

7 Designed for ages 10 through adult, we'll delve into some gloriously messy projects like extracting natural pigments from plants, seeing what makes them work biologically and chemically, and creating original paintings from them. We'll separate plant chlorophyll and pigments using paper chromotography, make mushroom spore prints and incorporate them into paintings or drawings, and learn about how plants use photosynthesis to convert the sun's energy into chemical compounds. On the final day we'll switch gears to environmental science, discussing sculptors such as Andy Goldsworthy who use natural materials in the environment to engineer exquisitely beautiful structures - then each student will build a land sculpture of his or her own during a nature walk. This course is intentionally designed to accommodate different ages. The level of detail for our science discussions will be presented using a "bus-stop" approach (intro level information presented first for all students; as the discussion becomes more detailed, students may opt to "depart from the bus" and return to art studio time).this is a 3 day class Outdoor Red 21 at Rhein Center 1:30pm to 3:30pm Mon, July 11 - Wed, July 13 M Tu W Perrin, Robyn Charmed Lizards Ages 10+ Location: Table 9 at Rhein Center Wed, July 13, 2016 Ages: 10 and up Embellish a 6" vinyl lizard with beads, pearls and charms to match your style.
