THE GOOD CENTURY OF SIENESE PAINTING From the Maniera Moderna to the Caravaggesque Light 18 th March 30 th June 2017 Itineraries in the territory For all three venues Siena, Pinacoteca Nazionale [National Picture Gallery] Opening hours: Monday, 9.00 a.m p.m.; from Tuesday to Saturday, 8.15 a.m p.m.; Sunday, 9.00 a.m p.m. Weekly closing day: Monday afternoon. Entrance fee 4; discounted 2. Montepulciano_Domenico Beccafumi, the artist as a young man Curated by Alessandro Angelini and Roberto Longi Asciano, Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore Opening hours: 9.00 a.m.-noon/ p.m.; closes on Sunday morning at Giovanni Antonio Bazzi AKA Sodoma, Stories of St. Benedict, cloister The extraordinary series of frescoes in the Great Cloister of the Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore, already created, in part, by Luca Signorelli ( ), was finished by Sodoma between 1505 and 1508 with the 26 missing lunettes (one scene, that of Mauro and Placido taking leave of St. Benedict, was eventually repainted by Riccio). In the last scenes there is a noticeable upgrade to Leonardo and Raphael s Florentine innovations. Pienza, Monastery of Sant Anna in Camprena The complex of Sant Anna in Camprena, now a holiday farm, is accessible to visitors only during its seasonal opening times starting on the 15 th of April It is possible to visit the Refectory alone, every day from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. with a few exceptions. Groups of over 10 people must book their visit at least one day in advance. Contact numbers:

We remind you that access to tourist buses is not advised. Tours for individual visitors and groups alike will be suspended on the following days: May: Thursday 11 th June: Saturday 3 rd, Saturday 10 th, Friday 16 th, Saturday 17 th, Saturday 24 th - Giovanni Antonio Bazzi AKA Sodoma, Frescoes in the Refectory The series of frescoes in the refectory of the Olivetan monastic complex of Sant Anna in Camprena, executed between 1503 and 1504, is Sodoma s first assignment in Tuscany, with that bright manner of colouring, which he had brought from Lombardy, to quote Vasari; Leonardo s influence on his art can be clearly seen, as well as his adherence to Pinturicchio s and Perugino s protoclassicist language, which was largely present and widespread in Siena. Sarteano, Church of San Lorenzo: Opening hours: every day, 8.30 a.m p.m. - Lorenzo di Mariano AKA Marrina, Eucharistic tabernacle - Lorenzo di Mariano AKA Marrina (?), sepulchral stone of the Piccolomini Tedeschini family The Eucharistic tabernacle was created in 1514, in the shape of a small classic temple, for Francesco di Nanni Pilli from Sarteano, most loyal to Cardinal Francesco Tedeschini Piccolomini (later Pius III) and his family. It was sculpted by Lorenzo di Mariano AKA Marrina, whose atelier probably produced the sepulchral stone of the Tedeschini Piccolomini family, originally from these lands, which is placed in the choir area. Sarteano, Sala d Arte Beccafumi (Church of San Martino) Opening hours: from March to May, on Saturday and Sunday: a.m p.m./ p.m.; from June, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday: a.m p.m./ p.m. Entrance fee: 3; free for children and teens under 18 - Girolamo di Giovanni del Pacchia, Angel of the Annunciation, Virgin of the Annunciation Girolamo del Pacchia (Siena, ca.) Angel and Virgin of the Annunciation. Oil on panel, 167X88 cm (each). Sarteano, Sala d Arte Domenico Beccafumi [Domenico Beccafumi Art Hall], ca Originally from the church of San Lorenzo, the two panels representing the protagonists of the Annunciation belong to the period when Girolamo del Pacchia was at his prime, that is the second decade of the XVI century, when the influence of Raphael s work on the Sienese artist was at its 2

strongest. It most likely is a commission from the Piccolomini Tedeschini family. Torrita di Siena, Church of Saints Flora and Lucilla Opening hours: a.m p.m./ p.m. - Lorenzo di Mariano AKA Marrina, Bust of Saint Catherine of Siena (from the Collegiate church of Saints Martino and Costanzo) Lorenzo di Mariano, AKA Marrina (Siena, ). Saint Catherine of Siena. Painted terracotta. Torrita di Siena, Collegiate church of San Martino, ca This precious painted terracotta bust representing Saint Catherine of Siena was donated to Torrita s Collegiate church in 1848, while its original destination remains unknown. The work belongs to a relatively young Marrina, as is evident from the noticeable similarities with the sculptures of Giovanni di Stefano, who had once been Lorenzo di Mariano s teacher. San Quirico d Orcia_From Sodoma to Riccio: Sienese painting in the latter decades of the Republic Curated by Gabriele Fattorini and Laura Martini Chiusure, Municipality of Asciano, Church of San Michele Arcangelo Opening hours: from Monday to Saturday, from a.m. to noon, by reservation only (tel ) - Bartolomeo Neroni AKA Riccio, Madonna and Child with Saint Benedict and Saint Michael the Archangel Signed and dated 1533 by Riccio, the painting is one of the artist s oldest works. It was commissioned by the monks of Monte Oliveto Maggiore, who at the time were the young master s main clients. Asciano, Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore Opening hours: 9.00 a.m.-noon/ p.m.; closes on Sunday morning at Bartolomeo Neroni AKA Riccio, Stories of St. Benedict: The Way to Calvary, Benedict sends Mauro to France and Placido to Sicily During the 30s of the XVI century, Bartolomeo Neroni worked several times for Monte Oliveto Maggiore, integrating the previous work of Luca Signorelli and Giovanni Antonio 3

Bazzi AKA Sodoma with his own frescoes. Pienza, Palazzo Borgia - Museo Diocesano [Diocesan Museum] Opening hours: every day except Tuesday, a.m p.m./ p.m. Entrance ticket: 4.50; discounted Marco Bigio/Giomo del Sodoma (?), Holy Family with the Infant St. John The painting, equipped with its original frame, is an excellent example of tondo for private use and shows its author s reliance on Sodoma s painting style. Sarteano, Sala d Arte Beccafumi (Church of San Martino) Opening hours: from March to May, on Saturday and Sunday: a.m p.m./ p.m.; from June, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday: a.m p.m./ p.m. Entrance fee: 3; free for children and teens under 18 - Domenico Beccafumi, Annunciation - This moving picture of the Annunciation, executed in for Antonio di Gabriello from Sarteano, is the last altarpiece made by Beccafumi in his long career. Sinalunga, Collegiate Church of San Martino Opening hours: from Monday to Saturday, 9.30 a.m.-noon/ p.m.; Sunday a.m. - Girolamo del Pacchia, Deposition from the Cross - Giovanni Antonio Bazzi AKA Sodoma and atelier, Madonna and Child with Saints The two altarpieces face each other in the transept of Sinalunga s Collegiate church, placed behind twin altars. It is only in the XVII century that they were brought here. Girolamo del Pacchia painted the Deposition around 1530, with a style still reminiscent of Raphael, for the original seat of the confraternity of Santa Croce. The Madonna and Child with Saints, painted with a devout spirit by Sodoma between , comes instead from the old church of the company of San Rocco. Sinalunga, Church of San Michele in La Fratta Opening hours: the chapel can be visited every day from a.m. to 3.00 p.m.; upon request, visitors can book a guided tour with admission fee by calling the following number at least 4 days in advance: Giovanni Antonio Bazzi AKA Sodoma, Madonna with Child and Saints, Saint Francis and Saint Jerome 4

This lively series of frescoes was painted by Sodoma, with the support of his atelier, in the 30s of the XVI century for the Pannilini family, then owner of the villa complex that is thought to have been designed by Baldassarre Peruzzi. Trequanda, Church of Saints Pietro and Andrea Opening hours: every day, 8.00 a.m p.m. - Giovanni Antonio Bazzi AKA Sodoma and atelier, Ascension of Christ This colourful fresco embellishes an altar that once belonged to the Sozzini family and, along with Andrea Sansovino s Madonna and Child, attests that two great artists of the Maniera Moderna worked for this church between the third and fourth decades of the XVI century. Pienza_Francesco Rustici, genteel Caravaggesque Curated by Marco Ciampolini and Roggero Roggeri Buonconvento, Museo d'arte Sacra della Val d'arbia [Sacred Art Museum of the Val d'arbia] Opening hours: Friday, a.m p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, a.m p.m./ p.m. Entrance fee: 3.00; discounted 2.00 (cumulative ticket allowing entry to the Museo della Mezzadria: 5.00) - Rutilio Manetti, Madonna in heaven in glory with angels, Saint Alban and Saint Peter the Apostle A work belonging to the painter s late-mannerist phase, it showcases Manetti s ability of drawing modern seventeenth-century elements from Barocci s traditional style such as the realistic portrayal of people and objects. Castiglione d Orcia, Parish Church of Saints Stefano and Degna Opening hours: every day, 9.00 a.m p.m. - Francesco and Vincenzo Rustici, Madonna of the Rosary with Saints Simeon and Catherine of Alexandria. Mysteries of the Rosary - The composition is one of the testaments to the popularity, in Siena and surrounding lands, of Vincenzo and Francesco Rustici s technique of presenting religious events under a kindly and familiar light. 5

Montalcino, Museo Civico e Diocesano d Arte Sacra [Civic and Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art] Opening hours: from Tuesday to Sunday, a.m p.m./ p.m. Entrance fee: 4.50; discounted Francesco Rustici, Madonna with Child and the Infant St. John, St. Onuphrius and St. Bernardo Tolomei A work destined for private worship, it showcases Francesco Rustici s ability to make the compositions and different typologies of XVI century Sienese tradition, beloved of Sienese clients, into modern, XVII century elements. Pienza, Palazzo Borgia - Museo Diocesano [Diocesan Museum] Opening hours: every day except Tuesday, a.m p.m./ p.m. Entrance ticket: 4.50; discounted Vincenzo Rustici, The Holy Family with Saints Francis and Catherine One of Vincenzo Rustici s many Madonnas with Child and Saints meant for private worship; the painter was, after Neroccio di Bartolomeo, the most prolific author of such paintings throughout the entire span of the history of Sienese art. San Quirico d Orcia, Collegiate Church of Saints Quirico and Giulitta Opening hours: every day, 9.00 a.m p.m. - Rutilio Manetti, The Madonna of the Rosary saving a drowned girl. Mysteries of the Rosary - Work painted by Manetti while he was still working for Francesco Vanni s atelier. Unfortunately, in rather recent times the beautiful canvas has suffered the despicable mutilation of two of the small scenes of the Mysteries of the Rosary surrounding the main scene. Sinalunga, Collegiate Church of San Martino Opening hours: from Monday to Saturday, 9.30 a.m.-noon/ p.m.; Sunday a.m. - Rutilio Manetti, The Marriage of the Virgin - This altarpiece showcases Manetti s powerful shift towards a more natural style in the first decade of the XVII century, allowing him to swap the bright hues reminiscent of Barocci s work in favour of a natural colouring. 6
