3 This collection of work covers the last two and a half years in Italy. For the past ten years I have spent three or four months each year drawing and painting the landscape in central Italy. The work started in the rolling hills and mountains of Le Marche. Both through its history and its geography this area has kept itself quite enclosed and separate from its more glamorous neighbours with the Appenine chain forming a dramatic boundary that separates the hilly wild country of le Marche from the more cultivated landscape of Umbria and Tuscany to the north and west. I started this collection of paintings in the spring and Autumn of 2014 working mostly within ten or twenty kilometres of my studio just west of Camerino. The locals are extremely friendly and often pull up at the side of the road where I m working to chat, inspect the work and watch. I am as amazed by their landscape, as they are by me painting it. This year the work has moved onto the other side of the Appenines where the landscape changes dramatically into a more cultivated arrangement of cypresses, olives and vines. My first trip was North via Fabriano to Urbino, San Sepolcro, Monterchi and Arrezzo and then back into le Marche via the Val D Orcia and Cortona. Subsequent trips took me into Tuscany through Umbria. I worked around Foligno, Trevi and Spoleto and then went up into Tuscany to work in Chianti and Florence before going towards Lucca. The final journey in September ended up in Siena and the Val D Orcia working around Montalcino, Pienza and Montepulciano as the grapes were being harvested in September My real home is in Oxfordshire and maybe that s the reason why the landscape of central Italy continues to feel so exotic and so inspiring. Going backwards and forwards between the gentle, fertile and fairly flat land of West Oxfordshire which is home and the hilly, hot and rugged landscape of central Italy seems to sustain a feeling of constant amazement. Francis Hamel. Rousham. October 2015
