Although he was not well received early in his career, people soon came to appreciate the beauty and importance of Pissarro s paintings. Discover how Pissarro used small, quick brushstrokes to make his pictures, and make an Impressionist drawing of your own.

Spend an afternoon among sculptures of heroic figures like Ganesh and Krishna listening to adventurous tales. Create your own story and turn it into a small fold-up book to share with others. A Fruitful Afternoon Sunday, August 4, 2:00 3:00 p.m. Sunday, August 25, 2:00 3:00 p.m. Images of fruit can be found throughout the Norton Simon collections. Depicted as tantalizing treats or symbolic objects, fruits have served as important subject matter to artists around the world. Listen to some fruitful stories, and make an appetizing still life of your favorite fruits and veggies. Performing Arts Sunday, September 1, 2:00 3:00 p.m. Sunday, September 29, 2:00 3:00 p.m. Artist Edgar Degas was fascinated by dancers and performers. He visited dance schools and the ballet in order to capture ballerinas in action. Listen to stories of aspiring performers, and spend some time drawing the dancers from Degas s sculptures and paintings. For Children Ages 4 10 FAMILY DAYS Creative Space: Exploring Beyond Brancusi Saturday, June 15, 1:00 3:00 p.m. Constantin Brancusi s work went on to inspire a new generation of sculptors. These artists pushed the boundaries of the medium by investigating space and experimenting with new materials. Create your own three-dimensional work of art using mess-free modeling clay. 3 Illustrating Music Saturday, August 17, 1:00 3:00 p.m. Ragamala paintings from India and Nepal illustrate melodies called ragas. A raga is commonly associated with a specific action, emotion, season or type of person. Spend an afternoon creating your own watercolor paintings illustrating the melodies and stories in your life. The Language of Flowers Saturday, September 14, 1:00 3:00 p.m. The Museum has a rich collection of flowers in the gardens as well as in the artwork that fills the galleries. Examine how such artists as Courbet, Fantin-Latour and Cézanne expressed the beauty of flowers through paintings. Create your own floral composition inspired by the works of the masters. THURSDAY SUMMER FUN Claude Monet: A Breath of Fresh Air Thursday, June 20, 1:00 3:00 p.m. The Impressionist painter Claude Monet enjoyed working outside in his garden or in the streets of Paris. The natural light allowed him to capture fleeting moments. Venture into the Norton Simon garden and make a watercolor painting to take home. Helen Pashgian: Discovering New Materials Thursday, June 27, 1:00 3:00 p.m. Helen Pashgian was one of only a few women associated with a group of California minimalists known as the Light and Space artists. Her interest in the perception of light led her to experiment with new materials like glass and liquid plastics. Decorate your own plastic orb to hang in a sunny place. Diego Rivera: Message on a Wall Thursday, July 11, 1:00 3:00 p.m. Inspired by Italian frescos and ancient Aztec wall paintings, Diego Rivera created masterworks on public buildings in both Mexico and the United States. His prolific murals depict stories and images that address vital social issues. Embellish the side of a paper building with pictures of something that is important to you. 4 Edgar Degas: Sculpting Movement Thursday, July 18, 1:00 3:00 p.m. Famous for his Impressionist paintings of ballerinas, Edgar Degas was also an accomplished sculptor. He made over a hundred sculptures in wax and clay, some of which were later cast in bronze. Spend an afternoon among galloping horses and dancing ballerinas, then head to the studio and use clay to make your own creation. Guercino: A Noble Creature Thursday, July 25, 1:00 3:00 p.m. Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, called Guercino, was an Italian painter who was often commissioned to create religious pictures and portraits of nobility. Count Filippo Aldrovandi requested a painting of one of his favorite animals his dog. Create a hand puppet of your own favorite animal or one of your pets. Indian and Southeast Asian Collection: Sculpting Workshop Thursday, August 1, 1:00 3:00 p.m. Many of the sculptures in the Norton Simon s Indian and Southeast Asian collection were created in ancient workshops by groups of artists. These handcrafted objects depict religious narratives belonging to three of the region s principal religions: Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism. (111.8 x cm) The Norton Simon Foundation FAMILY ART NIGHTS Creature Companions Friday, June 7, 6:30 7:30 p.m. From loyal dogs to curious cats, animals have long provided companionship to humans. Explore the galleries and discover how artists like Jacopo Bassano depicted animal companions. Pick your favorite creature, and make a puppet to take home. Sculpting in New Ways Friday, July 12, 6:30 7:30 p.m. The artists in the exhibition Beyond Brancusi: The Space of Sculpture moved away from the conventions of traditional art making. Experimenting with new materials, innovators such as Barbara Hepworth, Donald Judd and Robert Irwin created sculptures that engaged the space

5 around them. Use colored noodles and pipe cleaners to create your own original abstract masterpiece. Creating with Shapes Friday, August 9, 6:30 7:30 p.m. Artists Pablo Picasso and Liubov Popova were no strangers to geometric shapes. Their cubist paintings use letters, numbers, textures and fragmented views to interpret the world. Use paper cutouts and collage materials to create a cubist composition full of colorful and interesting shapes. The Traveler, 1915 Liubov Popova Russian, x 41-1/2 in. (142.2 x cm) Norton Simon Art Foundation Preparing for the Journey Friday, September 27, 6:30 7:30 p.m. The artist Jacopo Bassano was well known for his rich paintings of biblical scenes. His picture The Flight into Egypt is a wonderful example of his ability to tell stories through art. Mary, the Christ Child and Joseph make their way through unknown territory, guided by an angel. Create and decorate a paper bag basket to take on your next family trip. For Children Ages 8 12 YOUNG ARTISTS WORKSHOP Artful Baskets Saturday, July 27, 12:30 2:30 p.m. Spend an afternoon in the galleries with artist Cameron Taylor-Brown discovering delicious foods painted by the masters, followed by a basket-making workshop inspired by your discoveries. Then layer yarn, paper and cloth scraps onto a balloon template to create beautiful fiber baskets based on the colors and textures of fruits, vegetables and roots observed in the Norton Simon collections. The course is free, and space is limited to 20 participants. All materials are provided. Advance registration is required and can be made at nortonsimon.org/events.

6 For Children Ages TEEN ARTS ACADEMY Masterful Constructions Saturday, August 10, 1:00 4:00 p.m. and Sunday, August 11, 1:00 4:00 p.m. Artist Steven Bankhead guides students through a two-day exploration of the exhibition Beyond Brancusi: The Space of Sculpture. Some of the most groundbreaking 20th-century sculptors challenged the traditional conventions of art by experimenting with abstraction, space and new materials. Participants produce original minimalist sculptures using precut and prepared materials like wood, metal and Plexiglas. About the Norton Simon Museum The Norton Simon Museum is known around the world as one of the most remarkable private art collections ever assembled. Over a 30-year period, industrialist Norton Simon ( ) amassed an astonishing collection of European art from the Renaissance to the 20th century, and a stellar collection of South and Southeast Asian art spanning 2,000 years. Modern and Contemporary Art from Europe and the United States, acquired by the former Pasadena Art Museum, also occupies an important place in the Museum s collections. The Museum houses more than 12,000 objects, roughly 1,000 of which are on view in the galleries and gardens.
