2 SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS OPENING Ingres's 'Comtesse d'haussonville' from The Frick Collection October 30, 2009 January 25, 2010 The Norton Simon Museum presents a special installation of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres s stunning portrait of Comtesse d Haussonville, 1845, on loan from The Frick Collection in New York. This portrait of the comtesse, a young woman known as Louise, Princess de Broglie, is the first loan from the Frick in an art exchange program between the venerable New York institution and the Norton Simon foundations. This captivating, large-scale work has never before traveled to California. Two related preparatory drawings from the Frick s collections accompany the work. Gaze: Portraiture after Ingres October 30, 2009 April 5, 2010 In conjunction with the installation of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres s stunning Comtesse d Haussonville, 1845, on loan from The Frick Collection in New York, the Norton Simon Museum presents Gaze: Portraiture after Ingres. This exhibition of close to 150 paintings, sculpture and photographs from the Norton Simon collections traces artistic engagements with portraiture following Ingres s influence in the early to mid-19th century through to the present day, and examines why this genre appealed to some of the greatest avantgarde painters in the history of art. The exhibition includes works by Gustave Courbet, Edgar Degas, Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, and Andy Warhol, among many others. The Familiar Face: Portrait Prints by Rembrandt December 4, 2009 March 22, 2010 The Norton Simon Museum presents The Familiar Face: Portrait Prints by Rembrandt, an exhibition of fifteen etchings by Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn ( ). Rembrandt s prominence as a painter of portraits, particularly those of the merchants and burghers of Amsterdam, is well known. But the artist s etched prints also have a place and purpose in recording the visages of his contemporaries. A skilled, innovative printmaker, Rembrandt embraced etching as a means of expression and experimentation and the works in The Familiar Face illustrate the artist s keen power of observation and his gift for drama and humor. CONTINUING Divine Demons: Wrathful Deities of Buddhist Art August 14, 2009 March 8, 2010 The Norton Simon Museum presents Divine Demons: Wrathful Deities of Buddhist Art, a striking exhibition of Buddhist artworks depicting fearsome gods. A stark contrast to the smiling Buddhas and serene bodhisattvas in the Museum s collection, these formidable figures many of them baring fangs, drinking blood, or wearing garlands of severed heads are embodiments of the demonic divine and serve as protectors and guardians of the Buddhist faith. Eighteen paintings, sculptures and ceremonial objects from the Museum s permanent collection are presented in this small but fascinating exhibition. CLOSING Sweets & Treats: Wayne Thiebaud in the Collection of the Norton Simon Museum June 26 November 2, 2009 Norton Simon Museum 2

3 EVENTS CALENDAR Unless otherwise stated, all events are free with Museum admission, no reservations are necessary and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Admission is $8 for adults, $4 for seniors and FREE for members, students with ID and everyone age 18 and under. The first Friday of every month from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. is FREE for all visitors. LECTURES Ingres and the Comtesse d'haussonville Edgar Munhall, Curator Emeritus, The Frick Collection Saturday, November 7, 4:00 p.m. Edgar Munhall, one of the world s leading scholars of Ingres, discusses the importance of the comtesse s portrait within Ingres s long, multi-faceted career and introduces the artist s little-known subject, Louise d Haussonville, as one of the most remarkable women of her time. An examination of the fitful evolution of the portrait, its sources and myriad details reveals its dramatic complexity as one of those images that appear in dreams, as an early critic noted. The Fashion for Ingres Aileen Ribeiro, The Oak Foundation Professor in the History of Dress, Courtauld Institute of Art Saturday, November 14, 4:00 p.m. Aileen Ribeiro examines the often-complex views Ingres had with regard to fashion during his long career; though he had a traditional bias toward history painting and allegory, he nevertheless became one of the supreme artists of clothing during the rise of haute couture and the cult of the designer in mid-19th-century Paris. Ribeiro presents images of female fashion, ranging from the delicate neoclassical styles in vogue during Ingres s early career to the conspicuous consumption and lavish display of the middle decades of the 19th century. In both his portrait drawings and his paintings, Ingres produced a sense of heightened reality in his depictions of fashion, what the poet and critic Baudelaire described as the indivisible unity [between] the woman and her dress. MUSICAL PERFORMANCES Dancing Alone: Cello Suites by J.S. Bach Cellist Maksim Velichkin Friday, December 18, 7:00 p.m. Maksim Velichkin brings the galleries to life with his interpretation of Suites for Unaccompanied Cello by Johann Sebastian Bach. Composed while Bach served as a Kapellmeister in Cöthen, these works contain a great variety of technical devices, a wide range of emotional content, and some of Bach's most compelling voice interactions and conversations. Each class focuses on a specific artwork and the artist s unique creative process. Each class is $20 and is limited to 18 participants. Materials are provided. Advance registration is required. For further information and registration, contact the Education Department at (626) All levels of experience are welcome. Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres s Comtesse d'haussonville, 1845 Friday, November 13, 6:30 8:30 p.m. Hailed as the premier portraitist of the 19th century, Ingres considered his painting of the comtesse to be one of his finest compositions. Through mark-making and annotation, examine the development of the painting from the initial statement of the pose to the completed image. Paul Cézanne s Portrait of Uncle Dominique, c Friday, November 20, 6:30 8:30 p.m. Cézanne made a number of portraits by vigorously applying oil paint to the canvas with a palette knife. Drawing with pastels, explore Cézanne s technique of deriving the structure of a picture and the plasticity of form from brush strokes of paint. Amedeo Modigliani s Portrait of the Artist s Wife, Jeanne Hebuterne, 1918 Friday, December 11, 6:30 8:30 p.m. Norton Simon Museum 4

5 Little concerned with his subjects inner lives, Modigliani used the sitters as a pretext to experiment with his own pictorial language, which often reveals more about the artist than the subject. This class analyzes the artist s composition in terms of flat shapes inflected by minimal modeling. Pablo Picasso s Woman with a Book, 1932 Friday, December 18, 6:30 8:30 p.m. Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres exerted a profound influence on artists of the 20th century, even those who did not privilege the academic tradition. Delve into Picasso s portrait of his young lover, a symphony of strong outlines and bright colors, with an eye for pictorial rhyming through line and tone. ADULT ART HISTORY CLASS Ingres s World of Luxury Sunday, November 22, 10:30 a.m. 12:00 p.m. Charlotte N. Eyerman, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Saint Louis Art Museum Ingres s Comtesse d Haussonville expresses the painter s technical mastery as well as his deep and abiding fascination with the visual. This portrait of an elegant aristocrat articulates salient information about the countess and her husband, Ingres s patron. Studying the painting and the context in which it was made and exhibited also sheds light on broader issues in 19th-century French art and culture. Eyerman situates Ingres s masterpiece within his artistic practice and his identity as an academic artist of the highest order. She also considers the meaning and implications of his illusionistic style, expressed so perfectly in the Comtesse d Haussonville, in terms of the artist s predecessors and his legacy to the present day. The fee of $15 includes admission to the galleries on the day of class. Walk-in registration begins at 10:15 a.m. For further information, call the Education Department at (626) GUIDED TOURS & SPOTLIGHT TALKS GUIDED TOURS Please note that space is limited to 30 participants.
