2 This significant new collection from Doug Hyde represents the nation s best-loved artist at his most creative and wide-ranging. With Classic Hyde he revisits a familiar cast of characters who have made some enchanting new friends, while with Top Cat & Tails, he offers us a new take on what to wear on the catwalk this season. But first, Doug pays tribute to some of those great artists who have inspired him over the course of his own long and successful career. The charm and humour of Doug s subjects, the engaging spontaneity of the execution, the deceptively skilful deployment of form and colour and the emotional energy which he puts in at every stage of composition make this a collection to treasure.

3 The Art Critic 15 years ago my wife Suzi and I visited Tate Modern. I have never before or since been struck by a painting the way I was that day when I walked into a large hall exhibiting Mark Rothko s work. The impact was so great that when I left that room my outlook on art changed forever. It is easy to mock artwork, and for somebody to say Anyone could do it. But somebody has to do it to show the world that it can be done. To me all of these artists have done this; they have produced something incredibly appealing, thought provoking and simply stunning to look at. The ideas may seem simple but they are their ideas, new and original and unlike anyone else s. Each of them has created something incredibly appealing, thought provoking and simply stunning to look at. I hope that you can join with me in celebrating the artists who have inspired me and enjoy my homage to their creations.

4 Rothko s Brushstroke of Genius Paper Edition Size of x Rothko has had such a profound influence on me. The two pieces I saw that day in London turned my view of art upside down. The purity of the composition, the bold, broad brushstrokes, the beauty and effectiveness of the colours - I left the gallery thinking no more detail. I think about those paintings a lot, and they remind me that I want to achieve that power through simplicity; this is what I love - capturing an idea, a message, a view, an expression or a character as simply as possible.

5 Contemplating Mondrian Paper Edition Size of x Since Rothko changed my life, I have acquired a real love for abstract art. Mondrian in a way is a tidier version of Rothko; I find this work very calming and love the deliberately placed blocks of colours within the bold black grid.

6 Andy s Flowers Paper Edition Size of x Andy Warhol s screen prints are a fabulous way of looking at how bold colours, simple imagery and clever composition can be so successful. His Pop Art concept of repeating the same image with subtle changes is so effective and recognisable.

7 Dogmatic Views About Matisse Paper Edition Size of x Matisse s paper cut-outs are such stunning, bright, bold shapes which have a naivety that make them so appealing. It is this genre of Matisse s later work that I admire so much. Despite their simplicity, they are so powerful. In this image, Fuzz the dog is a younger version of me while I now stand their mesmerised by a masterpiece!

9 Top Cat & Tails When I started developing the Top Hat & Tails collection my first drawings and ideas were based on dogs. I knew cats would feature at some point; I did not know when, but did know they would be very glamorous couple. It was always going to be a Mr and Mrs take on matching bathrobes or towels but it would be a smart dress code link. When I started working on the cats they quickly became Arthur and Martha in my head. Martha was first and the silk scarf was crying out to be a sophisticated polka dot with the tiara as the finishing touch; Arthur has a lot to live up to and I think scrubs up well with his smart matching colour co-ordinated tie and braces not letting Martha down. When completed they quickly became Miss Purrfect and Top Cat, a purrfect couple.
