1 Bulletin 2625 Broadway Avenue, Redwood City, CA (650) January February 2013 President s Message SFC Happy New Year 2013, This past year has gone by so swiftly that I can hardly believe it. Our Autumn Theme show is hung and showing well. The artists reception for our last show was a success and we would like to continue with more of them. We need volunteers to help coordinate these receptions, and everything depends the artists accepted into each show doing their part by providing refreshments, etc. SWA is a living, growing organization and we welcomed many new members this last year. I hope that you all are taking advantage of the wonderful demonstrations we have on the third Saturday of the month. Even if it is not your preferred medium, there is always something to learn. Solid artistic principles work whether in watercolor, oil, pastel or acrylic. With the holidays behind us, we can settle into our painting routines with a fresh start and renewed energy. Remember our meeting on the 19th of January to install our Executive Board. Sherry Vockel, 1st Vice President The artist with the most votes in the Small Works Show for People s Choice is Joe Crosetti for his oil, Kensington. Congratulations, Joe. Sherry Vockel sold her painting, Asilomar Beach, at the Small Works Show reception on November 3rd. Welcome to New and Returning Members Sharon Harris and M. Rinault. General Meeting and Demo Saturday, January 19, 1 p.m. SWA Gallery, Redwood City Laurie Johnson Oil Portrait Demonstration Laurie Johnson started painting and drawing at age 12 by attending Ogelbay Art Institute in Wheeling, West Virginia. After college she studied at Scottsdale Artist School and attended numerous classes taught by notable artists. In 2006, she spent a year in Paris painting and visited many museums and Monet s Gardens. After returning to the states, Laurie continued her studies at the Watts Atelier in Southern California, and now teaches oil painting classes on the weekends in her Redwood City Art Center Studio. Laurie will demonstrate techniques she uses for her award-winning portraits. General Meeting and Demo Saturday, February 16, 1 p.m. SWA Gallery, Redwood City Tom Chapman Oil Portrait of a Dog In his first career Tom Chapman was a jockey. Now, instead of riding horses, Tom paints them. Tom works primarily with oils, and his style is versatile. The diversity in his techniques share one common ground: they all reveal his love, and knowledge of horses. Tom not only captures the grace, and beauty of his subjects, but also the raw power, and energy that equine athletes exude. Toms dramatic use of color, light and shadow display the sheer thrill of horse racing at its very best. Tom not only does horseracing paintings but horse related themes of all venues. He also paints dogs, cats, birds, chickens, wildlife, western themes and landscapes.

Small Works Show Reception a Success The reception for our Small Works Show was fun and a great success. We had people in attendance and the room was astir with conversation and camaraderie. It was a great opportunity for people to see our artists works and one painting was sold. The next reception will be during our December/ January show. A VOLUNTEER IS NEEDED to coordinate the receptions approximately 4-5 times per year. Not much work is involved: contacting the artists by to set a date for the reception and to bring finger food, sending them a reminder before the event to notifiy their friends/family/collectors, organize a few people to help set up and clean up, attend the reception and enjoy! The publicity flyers for the event will be made for you to to the artists. Outside publicity will be done by SWA. This job would take about four hours of work for each regular exhibit (not the Annual), which occurs about every two months. This is a great way to contribute to SWA, meet other SWA artists and connect with the public.
