1 FIREHOUSE ART CENTER CHILDREN S SUMMER ART PROGRAM 2017 FIREHOUSE ART CENTER CHILDREN S ART EDUCATION The Children s Summer Art Program is designed to educate and encourage children to express themselves through the arts with original ideas and concepts. FAC classes help children build fundamental and advanced cognitive skills and promote diverse methods of critical thinking and learning. The FAC s Creating with the Masters curriculum introduces children to the works of master and modern artists and teaches them about the history of art, museums, and art techniques while meeting the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Fine Arts: Visual Arts guidelines. If you would like to sponsor a scholarship for a child, please call the Firehouse Art Center. Your small donation can have a great impact for a child in need. ABOUT THE CHILDREN S SUMMER ART PROGRAM The Children s Summer Art Program provides an environment where creativity is fostered and embraced. Children attend daily, Monday through Friday, for either one or two weeks. Sessions are offered by age group, with two classes in each group. Children will attend both classes for their age group in the selected class session. A 15-minute supervised recess will take place in the park between classes. Tuition includes all materials. During the last half hour of the final class in each session, parents are invited to view a mini exhibition of work produced during the program. The Children s Summer Art Program is funded in part by the Oklahoma Arts Council, Norman Arts Council, and the City of Norman. Sessions are offered by age group, with two classes in each group. Children will attend both classes for their age group in the selected class session. Minimum enrollment: 9 Maximum enrollment: 15 CHILDREN S SUMMER ART SHOW 2017 Children s Summer Art Show: August 11 - August 26 Reception: August 18 from 6-9 PM Each summer, the FAC Gallery features the work of students who participated in that year s Children s Summer Art Program. One piece of artwork from each student that took a class during the summer will be selected to be shown in the exhibition. The art show is an exciting experience for the students, allowing them the opportunity to showcase the effort they put into their art through a professional gallery setting. The exhibition also highlights the FAC faculty s dedication to excellence and providing quality art education. PLEASE VISIT THE FIREHOUSE ART CENTER OR CALL TO ENROLL.

2 SESSION I (ONE WEEK) JUNE 5 - JUNE 9 NON-MEMBER TUITION: $90.00 MEMBER TUITION: $ HOURS OF EDUCATION Colorama Collages Students will create a variety of vibrant collages inspired by the colorful abstract and realistic art created by master artists. This class will introduce the color wheel, focusing on the differences between primary, secondary, cool, and warm colors, as well as the differences between abstract and realistic artwork. ARTIST: ALMA THOMAS Texture, Space, and Color Using a variety of materials, students will combine organic and geometric shapes to create shallow, flat forms that will be painted with a multitude of colors, textures, lines, and patterns. The combined elements will be transformed into contemporary, low relief sculptures inspired by the work of Frank Stella. ARTIST: FRANK STELLA Don t Eat the Art Food has always been a popular subject in art! This class will use food as inspiration for students own artwork Students will explore their creativity as they paint with chocolate, create a self portrait out of food, and design their own candy dream home. Instructor: Haley Prestifilippo ARTIST: WILL COTTON Pop-Up Paper Engineering In this class, students will cut, fold, and glue paper to make 2-D drawings and found images pop-up into 3-D works of art. Contemporary master artists will inspire students as they learn basic techniques for transforming shapes into vertical and moving forms. ARTIST: ROBERT SABUDA ARTIST: M.C. ESCHER From City Streets to Expansive Territories Students will learn the fundamentals of one, two, and three point perspective, while exploring the work of traditional and contemporary master artists, from Leonardo da Vinci to Thomas Moran to M.C. Escher. This class will introduce the sfumato technique of shading, and encourage building the illusion of forms and depth on flat paper. Inspired by Picasso In this class, students will be inspired by Pablo Picasso s vast body of work, and explore art in a variety of media. Drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, and printmaking will be used to create artwork that reflects Picasso s visual styles, as well as aspects of the students own lives. 3 SESSION II (TWO WEEK) JUNE 12 - JUNE 23 NON-MEMBER TUITION: $ MEMBER TUITION: $ HOURS OF EDUCATION Pinch, Coil, and Slab Pinch, pinch, and coil your clay, because this is how artists play. Students will use hand building techniques including pinch, coil, and slab, to create animals and imaginary objects. ARTIST: JOSH DEWEESE Art is Purrfect Students will create near purr-fect art as they draw, paint, collage, and print a collection of feline-inspired artwork. This class will follow the cat as it prowls through the history of art: from Egypt where it was given Godlike status, through the jungle homes of big cats, to today s pampered, domesticated companions. ARTWORK: THE GAYER-ANDERSON CAT Greatest Art Class on Earth Come one, come all! This class explores circus themes in art - clowns, horse riders, acrobats - as they have been interpreted by master artists throughout history. Students will create a self portrait as a clown, design a pop-up circus tent, and collaborate on a class circus. Instructor: Haley Prestifilippo ARTIST: HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC Wired for Success The artistic element of line will inspire students to use found objects to create art, while they discover the ways artists have used wire to create masterpieces. Students will learn the meaning of found objects as an artistic medium and how to enjoy using them in their art. ARTIST: ALEXANDER CALDER Chinese Brushwork: Blossoms & Birds Students will learn to paint a variety of birds and flowers using the Chinese Brushwork style of ink and watercolor on rice paper. Line, form, and dry and wet brush strokes will all be used to create different effects on the rice paper. Instructor: Beverly Herndon ARTIST: YUNG LIU Hanging Art That Lights Our Path Chandeliers have often been visual features of many dwellings throughout history. In this class, students will explore how chandeliers and lit structures blur the boundary between art and function while making mixed media sculptures. ARTIST: AURORA ROBSON

4 SESSION III (ONE WEEK) JUNE 26 - JUNE 30 NON-MEMBER TUITION: $90.00 MEMBER TUITION: $ HOURS OF EDUCATION Art Opens Doors Behind the door of our art studio, students will study a variety of mediums and learn how opening life s doors can be exciting. Each child will create a concertina book of doors, with a different artistic medium and idea behind every door, while growing their artistic confidence. ARTIST: JAN VERMEER Eco Art Discover how art can help us understand and help the natural world! Students will connect to the world around them by using found and recycled objects to create original art that helps them learn about the environment and conservation. Instructor: Jenny Elton ARTIST: DARIO TIRONI Chinese Brushwork: Mountain Landscapes This class will introduce traditional Chinese Brushwork styles for painting landscapes in ink and watercolor on rice paper. Students will use form, line, perspective, and wet and dry brush methods as they learn how to paint mountain landscapes. Instructor: Beverly Herndon ARTIST: YAM CHUN HON Fish Tails and Tales Something fishy is going on in the art studio! Students will take inspiration from the whimsical and colorful artwork of artists like Paul Klee, Alexander Calder, and more. Line, color, shape, form and texture will all be studied as students make hangings, drawings, paintings, and a mini-sculpture. ARTIST: JOAN MIRO Comic Characters in Motion Students will explore classic narrative arcs and how to create engaging stories through illustrative sequential panels on paper. This class will help students to break down the visual narrative required of each scene and panel in order to completely immerse comic viewers in an imagined world. ARTIST: JACK KIRBY Selfies, the Modern Self-Portrait Get creative with your selfies! Students will paint stunning self-portraits using various artists techniques for inspiration. This class will compare and contrast the portrait work of different master artists, encouraging students to explore their creativity through varying mediums and technical approaches. 5 SESSION IV (TWO WEEK) JULY 10 - JULY 21 NON-MEMBER TUITION: $ MEMBER TUITION: $ HOURS OF EDUCATION Scrumptious Sculptures Students will use multiple clay techniques, such as pinch, coil, and slab, to create sculptures that resemble delicious foods. The final scrumptious sculptures will be painted so that they look good enough to eat! ARTIST: CLAES OLDENBURG You ve Been Framed This class will take several different approaches to the portrait genre, as students experiment with medium, technique, and scale. Students will make their own brushes and pigments, use commercial paints and brushes, and work on larger-than-life self portraits. ARTIST: STASYS EIDRIGEVICIUS Surreal Creations Students will create dream-like images, in the manner of the surrealists, featuring animals, buildings, textures, and more. Drawing, painting, collage, and papier-mâché with found objects will be the foundation for artwork that challenges reality. ARTIST: RENÉ MAGRITTE Recycled Art Saving the planet one art project at a time! Students will use found objects and materials to recycle, repurpose, and recreate imaginative works of art. This class will challenge students concept of traditional art and artistic mediums, while encouraging their imagination, creativity, intellect, and intuition. ARTIST: JASPER JOHNS Truly Mixed Media This course is a cross-disciplined art experience that challenges students to consider a diverse range of materials and better describe their artistic interests. Students will learn how to work with a combination of clay, plastic, fishing line, and paper in order to create cohesive mixed-media sculptures. ARTIST: ALEXANDER CALDER Carnival Masks Across cultures and throughout history, masks have been used for celebrations, theatre, enjoyment, and functional purposes. Students will study the Carnival Masks of Venice that feature distinctive metals, beads, feathers, and ornamentation, before creating their own unique masks. ARTIST: VENETIAN MASCHERARI

6 SESSION V (TWO WEEK) JULY 24 - AUGUST 4 NON-MEMBER TUITION: $ MEMBER TUITION: $ HOURS OF EDUCATION Impress with Impressionism From watercolor to oil pastels, students will explore a variety of mediums to create fun and colorful artwork inspired by the Impressionists. Through the exploration of materials, students will learn how to use their imaginations and relate art to their lives. ARTIST: GUSTAVE CAILLEBOTTE ARTIST: NIKI DE SAINT PHALLE Oceans of Art Using the ocean as inspiration, students will study the sea and its history to create sculptures, paintings, and collages. This class will introduce a variety of artwork, from both old masters like JMW Turner and contemporary artists like Niki de Saint Phalle, encouraging students to compare and contrast the styles and meanings of work inspired by the rich history of Earth s oceans. Art in Nature This class is all about combining art with nature! Inspired by the work of Andy Goldsworthy, students will use natural objects such as flowers, leaves, and sticks to create original artwork. Along with paintings and prints, students will also make artistic sculptures that can be placed in their yard to help the wildlife around them. ARTIST: ANDY GOLDSWORTHY ARTIST: JOSEPH CORNELL Big Box Art Students will think outside and inside the box, and even ask what can we do with the box? This fun and challenging class will focus on modern and contemporary art and use many different artists, such as Joseph Cornell, Marisol Escobar, and Louise Nevelson, for inspiration. Students will return home with a Russian Nesting Doll collection of boxes of art. Chinese Brushwork: Cats & Dogs Students will discover the unique and traditional art form of Chinese Brushwork as they create kittens, puppies, cats, and dogs. This class will cover the techniques of form, perspective, and wet and dry brush effects. Instructor: Beverly Herndon ARTIST: LIAN QUAN ZHEN Miniature Model to Monumental Idea This class will encourage students to think beyond the materials in front of them in order to envision largescale creative possibilities. Students will make clay maquettes, otherwise known as scaled down models or sketches, and use them as a way to generate ideas for monumental works of art on paper. ARTIST: SERGEI ISOPUV
