1 Chapter 5 Light and Color
2 The Elements of Design are the basic in ingredients which make up the visual language of art. Think of them as the alphabet and the work of art as the completed essay or book. Line Shape Value Texture Color

20 In the 17th century, Sir Isaac Newton discovered that color was the result of light. When sunlight passes prism it creates the color spectrum. A good example of this found in nature is a rainbow.

22 Primary Colors Red Blue Yellow Every other color is made from mixing a combination of these colors. Mixing them all together makes a muddy, grayish, black.
23 Complementary Colors Complementary colors are the colors opposite one another on the color wheel. Red and Green Blue and Orange Yellow and Violet Mixing complementary colors creates gray or brown, which we call Tones.
24 What is simultaneous contrast? When you put a complements next to one another they become brighter and bolder. Green looks really, really green when it is next to red.
