ARTWORKOF THE MONTH February Predator by Star Mudersbach - 18 x 24 in. Acrylic and mixed media on canvas "There is a compelling passion in every artist's soul that feeds on creative expression and a sense of one's self. Seeking the right subject matter to paint seems to be an ongoing quest for most artists. Painting endangered animals seems to be mine. It just 'Feels Right.' The African lion is disappearing from the wild at an alarming rate. There are only about 20,000 left, versus over 200,000 just over a hundred years ago. They are now extinct in 26 African countries. In just the last 20 years the population has plummeted 43 percent. Illegal hunts, poaching, overexploitation, and retaliatory kills are the major contributors to this sad decline. My inspiration for Predator was to show the strength and quiet beauty of this magnificent animal, that hopefully will never be lost. Con t pg 3 Diane B., Rosalie V. and I are judging the Benedictine scholarship art on Wednesday. There will be a reception on Saturday for all the winners. The league is providing the food. Benedictine has been a good partner and we look forward to continuing our relationship. So, look forward to warmer weather and creative spirit. 3 Con t from pg 1 As this was my 2nd revision of my original painting, I feel I have achieved what I was searching for. If you can't completely walk away from a painting that you have finished, take another look. If it doesn't feel right, stay with it until it does. You are the creator. You and only you know when it's finished. My portfolio and commissioned works of art include portraits, wildlife and nature, cartoons, and illustrations for children's short stories that I also write. My background in art includes graphite, pen and ink, charcoal, pastel, and acrylic mediums. Acrylic painting and children's stories are my passion! It gives me the ability and freedom to create 'Moment to Moment' endlessly. Being able to start and stop spontaneously, or when time permits, is a great thing in today s hectic world. There is such a sense of total expressiveness in each brush stroke, or word on the page of a story, that it is difficult for me to compare it to other forms of art. October: CRITIQUE MONTH: Subject: Still life November: Susan Seaborn, nationally recognized watercolor artist, will demonstrate creating quick, loose watercolor paintings. MAL MEMBERSHIP SCHOLAR - Scholarships are available to MAL members for attending a special workshop or class. You can apply for up to a $250 scholarship to help with the tuitions. 5 Drawing, sewing, designing and developing products has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I was fortunate enough to transform those childhood passions into a lifelong, bonafide career in New York City's Fashion Industry. When not producing artwork and design concepts for my clients - at NIKE, Disney, Burberry's, Macy's, Nine West, along with many others in the Garment Center - I was teaching those same skills to fashion students at Parsons and Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). During those wonderful years, I also had the opportunity to teach for several years at Parsons in Paris Summer Program and at the Fashion Design program at the University of Trinidad and Tobago. Recently I have joined the faculty of Arizona State University's new BA Program in Fashion. Apologies to Elvie Becker for the error in the February newsletter for inserting the wrong photo.
