1 9 th Edition June 2016 By: Gabrielle Doll, Visual Arts Consultant for Seine River School Division Well hello to June and almost good bye to what seems to be a very quick school year! Since the last newsletter, we have had quite a few exciting art events, including the third annual division-wide Art Show, held this year at Ste. Anne Collegiate. We have also been working on a few other artistic ventures After School Art Workshop By popular request, this workshop focussed on creating art gift ideas with their students, suitable for any occasion, focussed on color tone, brush stroke variation, and other painting techniques. Acrylic paint can literally be applied to any surface. In this instance, we painted on glass, metal, and wood. Afterwards, florals were outlined with raised paint, and then a varnish was sprayed to add a shine and protect the surface. Eye Catching Creations in all forms Above, Ste. There were a total of three banners painted in beautiful colors to be featured in our three high schools.

2 Marvelous Mask Making Magic! To prepare for École St. Norbert Immersion s musical The Lion King, students in the cast created their own masks using plaster of Paris with custom features such as horns, beaks, and tusks. For a final touch, masks were painted with acrylic to match the character s costume. Special attention was given to color and shading to create a life-like appearance. And now, on with the show! This year s art show was hosted by Ste. Anne Collegiate. Once again, staff and students banded together to help with set up, take down, food, music, and many other details to make the show a wonderful celebration of art! Thank you to everyone for their generous help! Let s take a look at some of the wonderful creations featured Early years buzzing bees and middle years wild animal portraits, created in soft pastel, were seen throughout the transformed gymnasium / gallery.

3 Lots to see throughout the show. For the most part, work went up easily, when setting up for the show. However, sometimes there were interesting physical and structural challenges when hanging work. Risers proved to be a useful backdrop for print making and Picasso inspired art. (right) Volleyball netting was ideal for hanging Charlotte s Web inspired paintings! (below) Entertainment.and the Crowd! The magnificent Arborgate choir performed for a captivated audience. A total of six schools were in attendance for the show.

4 All 15 schools in Seine River School Division had work showcased. There were approximately 2000 pieces of art displayed! Painted landscapes, outer space, po ery, and so much more! Students wait in line for the delicious free popcorn! The Ste. Anne Elementary and High school bands performed throughout the day and a er school. In addi on, the SAC guitar club performed beau fully! High School Art was really spectacular Take a look!

6 And finally. Do you feel like you are being watched? Where else could you see such a unique and wonderful variety of Eye Art? Well, under one roof at the art show! Grade one s from École Ile Des Chênes School created a realistic picture of one of their own eyes in soft pastel to correlate to what they were learning in science. Grade eights from École St. Norbert Immersion created eyes on wooden blocks using acrylic paint to evoke expression following their eye study, and above left depicts two high school student s decorative eye art. The art show was a wonderful celebration of our artistic achievements. It was really marvellous to witness the students reactions to having their work displayed in such a large and exciting venue.
