June 2018 Volume 27 Issue 6 Limestone Quilters Guild Newsletter, Kingston, ON limestonequiltersguild@yahoo.ca The objectives of the organization shall be: to foster interest, awareness and education in the area of quilt making. The Guild is to be a non-profit organization with all the monies being used to promote its objectives and support local charities, organizations and educational facilities. I am going to spread seaweed compost, NO clover, and black mulch. Then put the little flowering plants in the corner garden in the yard. I am going for bright.that's it this year: bright with showy blossoms. Sort of like a newlook quilt. Or maybe an Amish-look. Fingers crossed. This past quilt year has been Quilt Show, Quilt Show. Not next year! It is going to be a chance to share ideas, to learn new tricks and techniques, and to relish fabric creativity. Some of it will be given to us by guests, and some will come from our members. Our members and friends are "smart cookies", and they are willing to share their skills with us. That is the reason guilds exist: they further the education, and support the efforts of the members. I hope the Limestone Quilters' Guild is such an organization. The conveners are busy planning the Quilting year. Hopefully, the year's program will be ready for the September newsletter, so that you are able to book workshops, and to plan around them. Save items for the Quilters' Market, when you are sorting and cleaning your sewing/quilting supplies,
think of questions for the executive forum, and think about sharing your knowledge during "Demo" nights. Talk to new members and folks who you do not know, yet. Wide networks of acquaintances improve our lives, each day. Have a wonderful summer, no matter who you are with, and whatever you are doing each day. Enjoy your travels and adventures in Canada, or abroad, and come back with happiness and contentment. Probably, you will have some new fabric and patterns, as well! Our first meeting is September 5th, and the executive and conveners will provide the snacks! This is a well-oiled machine! Susan Visit Quilts Kingston to see the hundreds of amazing quilts and wall hangings and shop at the huge Quilters' Boutique for one of a kind treasures made by members of The Limestone Quilters' Guild and Kingston Heirloom Quilters. Talk to our featured quilter, Roslyn Hanes and examine the special collection of Modern Quilts and Canada Themed Quilts as well as the Traditional Quilts and Fibre Art. The Limestone Loopers and the Cataraqui Guild of Needle Arts will also display their work. The Tearoom will be open for lunches and snacks and 13 area Vendors will be set up with lots of fabric, sewing machines and notions. The Quilters' Boutique will be selling small quilts, placemats, microwave bowls and any other quilt related item you can imagine at very reasonable prices. All profits support the guilds and their charitable work in the community. Page 2 of 15
In Appreciation Program Our first workshop will be September 6 th at Odessa Fairgrounds. It will be from 10:00 to 4:00, and please bring your lunch. Zarah Kerr, one of our Guild Members, will demonstrate a Quilt As You Go pattern. Please contact Lillian McQuaide at Page 3 of 15
Travel & Retreats Grand Rapids August 21-25, 2018 The bus is filling-up. If you are considering this trip, please read the flyer in this newsletter. This getaway is perfect for Quilters because there will be beautiful Quilts to view, new products to explore, and friends to share the experience. As well, it is a one day drive to a beautiful city. Our driver is Andrew, again. A professional and kind man, who gets us where we want to go, when we want to go! He is patient, too. Please sign-up before the 21st of June, to insure your seat on the bus! Susan Clarke Page 4 of 15
Block of the Month The quilting year is coming to an end. I can t believe it. I m so happy with the quilts that the members have shared. There will be some of the BOM quilts in the quilt show in June. I love how some members just used the blocks and changed the layout. It s a great way to put your stamp on the quilt. Thanks so much to all the people who participated and encouraged me in my first pattern release. Here are a few for you to check out. Ariane Blog: Arianequilts.blogspot.com Page 5 of 15
Library News Hello Quilters! Thank you for your library acquisition recommendations. Anne and I will be reviewing the list when we purchase new books for the library over the summer. Another activity Anne and I will be completing is weeding the library to remove items that have not been signed out for a while. Enjoy your summer! Regards, Sandra Halliday and Anne Smithers Fabric Postcards I hope everyone in the Post Card Group has enjoyed sending and receiving their cards! The members will have to wait until the September Guild meeting to see our "Maps/Travel" Post Cards and the June birthday cards! We plan on continuing with the Post Card Group into the quilt "year"; current members, please send me a quick by July 14th to let me know if you are or are not planning to continue in the group next year. If there are any other guild members interested in joining us, we welcome you enthusiastically!!! We typically make 10, 4"x6" post cards each, one for the months September - December, then February - June based on a them, AND one birthday card for another member. There are many websites with great tutorials on how to make a fabric postcard, and I would also be happy to provide a short demonstration on how I make my cards and what I use for the "batting" inside the card if you need some hands-on visuals! Please feel free to call me at or me at darlene.moritz@yahoo.ca by July 14th. I am also looking for fresh ideas for the monthly themes!! Send me your thoughts and inspirations by July 14th. I plan to send the themes and distribution list by the end of July, with the first card being due by the September Guild meeting. Wishing you all a wonderful summer filled with plenty of sun, sand, bbqs, family & friends!! Darlene Page 6 of 15
Community Quilts We had a full house for April s workshop sixteen members attended! Quilts were pin-basted, bindings made and donations were still being sorted. An excellent pot luck lunch was had and as usual excellent soups from Gerrie. Eight members attended May s workshop. Many quilts were sandwiched, 1 kit was sewn up from the blocks from Quilts Canada. Borders were sewn on pieced centers. We still have many small centers to be made into kits for pediatric quilts. Binding and labels were made. We are working on plans for the quilt show. A great pot-luck lunch was served. Everyone is welcome to attend. We meet the Tuesday after our Guild meeting at Annie Dickson s home 1411 Tamarac Street from 10 to 4. Even if you can only donate a part of your time, we would be happy to have you. The pot luck lunches are a varied treat! If possible, please let Annie know by phone ( ) or (annie.j.dickson@gmail.com). Bernie Ison Page 7 of 15
SAVE YOUR STITCH BY STITCH RECEIPTS!! Please bring in your receipts from Stitch by Stitch. For every $2,000 we collect in receipts, Stitch by Stitch gives us a $100 gift certificate. These funds are put to good use by our Guild. You can drop off your receipts by depositing them in the envelope located at the reception tables. A special thank you goes to Stitch by Stitch. 12 Meet A Guild Member An interview with Wendy Nicol What is the first word that comes to your mind when you think of quilting? Why? Colour. One of my favorite things about choosing fabric for a quilt, and putting it together, is to see how the most unlikely colors come together to make amazing designs and to summon up amazing feelings. Did you ever take formal quilting lessons? Why or why not? Yes. When I lived in Ottawa I sewed at the most amazing shop and I took lessons there. I have always had a sewing machine, but meeting others who were quilting, and doing so many interesting things, encouraged me to build the skills to be able to not only quilt, but to express what was in my head. I am still always looking for opportunities to learn something new. What are your feelings about quiltmaking compared with other household activities? No contest. Other than walking my dogs and spending time with my husband there is nothing I enjoy more than quilting. Other household tasks take a back seat. What benefits would our younger generation get from quilting? The opportunity to express yourself in various and unusual mediums. I think, now that we no longer quilt for utility, people tend to come to it slowly as they seek new ways to use fabric and fibres. Where do you get your ideas for making a quilt? From other quilters, from pieces of fabric, from photographs and, sometimes, from thoughts in the middle of the night. What method do you use for quilting your projects? Why do you choose this one? I have quilted using most methods one of the benefits of the resources I used to have available to me. I m not good at applique but I ll try almost anything else. I am currently working on walking foot quilting and am really enjoying that. Who knows what I will try next! How do you feel about selling your quilts? Have you every sold one of your quilts? I don t sell my quilts although I do give most of them away. For me one of the great pleasures in making a quilt is thinking about the person I will give it to, and that influences everything from fabric choice to size and quilting methods. One of my favorite sayings is those that sleep under a quilt sleep under a blanket of love. Page 12 of 15
In your quilting tool box what is your most valued tool? Why? My sewing machine, no question. I love it and I love finding ways to incorporate its many features in my quilts. I often quilt using machine embroidery taking something from the quilt. I love trying new stitches to make pictures, for machine embroidery, to incorporate text or to embroider my labels with fancy script and interesting objects. As a hobby, has quilting become more fulfilling the more you do it? Why? Absolutely. When we moved back to Kingston I finally had a sewing room of my own. The original plan was I would also put up my loom(s) in the room. As I started to plan it out I realized I really only wanted to sew. I sold my looms, my yarn, books and everything to a young woman who dreamed of weaving baby blankets. I wished her luck. I have never regretted concentrating on sewing. Like most quilters I know, I miss my sewing machine when I am away from it too long and quilting ideas pop into my head at strange times. What would be a lesson learned that you could share with other quilters? Learn from others, and share what you know. Never be afraid to try something new and remember that every quilt you make should be an expression of you quilt from the heart. Kind of like all lessons in life. Don t Forget September 5 th Guild Meeting SENIOR CENTRE, 56 Francis Street, Kingston Completed kits for Community Quilts Show and Tell items Library Books Remember to Sign in at Every Meeting Please remember to sign in at every meeting you attend. The book will be placed on the 50/50 table at each meeting. These names are used for the attendance draw so it is important that you register. Participation in the Quilt Block Groups is a nice way to contribute and feel involved with the guild. These groups support the Social Committee in providing snacks and refreshments at break time and in assisting with the activities of the meeting. Each guild member is asked to volunteer only once during the membership year. If you are unable to take part as assigned, you are asked to switch with a fellow guild member or ask the coordinator to be re-assigned later. Page 13 of 15
