There is a piece of plastic canvas and two skeins of Tapestry yarn for the third coaster using the Try a New Stitch...Diagonal Hedge Row and two temporary EAC tattoos. The biggest goody is a CD donated by the Seminar 2013 Committee and the Winnipeg Embroiderers Guild giving the instructions for the 12 projects shown in their Calendar fundraiser. Many, many thanks to the Seminar Committee for their very generous donation. Enjoy the projects! The information is on the website for the Artist Trading Card Exchange and it is included in this newsletter. I know you have all been working on your ATCs for the exchange. All the information about who and where to mail your ATCs is on page 14. Remember that the deadline is April 1st. Also included in this issue are more pictures of Kathleen Gilbert s work plus the rest of the directions for finishing her Crossed Stitches Sampler. I enjoyed putting in her work so much, that in the next few issues, I will continue to include some of the projects from previous newsletters. You are all so creative and I want to show your work in the newsletter and on the website. Speaking of the website, the Youth section is on the list for upgrading and you should see some changes in the next few months. If there is anything you would like included, please let me know and I ll see about getting it on the site. With winter still lingering in most parts of Canada, I hope you enjoy the Weeeeeeeee Winter pattern. Change the threads to make the polar bear look the way you want and send me a picture. I ll include it in the newsletter and you ll receive a goody! Jovana correctly answered one of the riddle questions and she was sent a kit to stitch her very own needlebook. As you can see, I am getting caught up sending out the newsletters and hope to have them up to date by mid-summer. My goal is to have the following deadlines: Fall issues mailed by August 15th Winter issues mailed by November 15th Spring issues mailed by February 15th Summer issues mailed by May 15th I hated getting so far behind and intend not to let it happen again now that I ve retired. That s it for now, so happy stitching! Fall 2013 Page 2

6 Is it time to renew? Oh Goody! Try Diagonal Hedge Row stitch and make a lovely coaster. Square of plastic canvas Two skeins of Tapestry yarn in two colours Seminar 2013 CD with 12 projects to make EAC temporary tattoos Many, many thanks to the 2013 Winnipeg Seminar Committee for their donation of the calendar fundraising projects CD. If this is your last issue, a notice will be on the front page of your newsletter. Send in your renewal of $15 to continue your membership. You will continue to receive the Youth Embroiderers News, goodies, access to affordable correspondence courses, EAC exhibitions, Eleanor Thomas Youth Award, Leonida Leatherdale Library, prizes, PLUS much more - so, please don t let your membership expire. See page 15 for the renewal form, if you want to use it. Otherwise, just send in your cheque or use a credit card on the EAC secure site. Don t drop your membership! Try a New Stitch...Diagonal Hedge Row Diagonal Hedge Row makes a nice textured background stitch when done in one colour. Follow the arrows on all diagrams so the back is covered well. This will help hide the plastic canvas on the front. Diagram 1 Diagram 1 Starting at lower left corner with the first colour, bring needle up at 1 (go to the right 2 canvas lines and up 1 canvas line). Go down at 2. Come up at 3 and go down at 4. Continue following the arrows and end at the top right corner. Thread the yarn through the stitches at the back and cut the yarn. Diagrams and directions by Linda Brenner. Continue following the numbers and direction of arrows all the way to the top right. Thread the yarn through the stitches at the back and cut the yarn. Diagram 3 With the first colour, come up at 1 (ninth hole from the left) and go down at 2, come up at 3 and go down at 4. Continue following the numbers and direction of arrows all the way to the top right. Thread the yarn through the stitches at the back and cut the yarn. Continue filling in the plastic canvas until the lower right side is completed. Then complete the upper left side. If it is easier, turn the plastic canvas when completing the upper left side. Ensure that the first colour lines go from left to right and the second colour lines go from right to left. Glue a piece of felt slightly smaller than the plastic canvas to the back. 9 Crossed stitches sampler By Kathleen Gilbert (from the Youth Embroiderers Newsletter Winter, Spring and Fall 1997) Most of Kathleen s diagrams had to be redone as they didn t scan very well from the copies of the newsletters. Row 4: Lazy Daisy and Seed Bead Flowers Start this row 8 threads below the bottom of the hearts. Use #8 perle cotton to do the lazy daisy stitches. Start with the flower in the centre of the fabric and then work the flowers to the right and then go back and work the flowers to the left of the centre. Come up in the centre basting line hole to stitch the centre flower. Each of the lazy daisy stitches covers three fabric threads with the tie-down stitch over one more thread. For each flower, stitch the left side first, then the right one, then the centre one. Count over eight threads to start at the centre of the next flower. The seed beads are added last with the white sewing thread used double in your quilting needle. It is a good idea to stitch through each bead twice before going on to the next bead. Carry your thread under the lazy daisy stitches neatly on the back as you move from flower to flower. Row Four Row Five: Hardanger Clock Start this row 4 threads below the bottom of the lazy daisies and two threads to the left of the centre basting line. Use #5 perle cotton for this stitch. Each satin stitched unit (kloster) consists of 5 stitches side by side over 4 threads. You will be stitching the outside circle first and then the inside circle. It is important to avoid any threads travelling on the diagonal on the back of the work in areas that might be cut later. By following the counting diagram, you should be able to accomplish this. You can add the numbers of the clock face inside the clock or you could be adventurous and try cutting and wrapping or weaving the bars as in true Hardanger for an open design area. Quel est le comble d un citron? Fall 2013 Page 9

10 Crossed stitches sampler, continued... Row Five Row Six: Smyrna Cross A This row starts on the left basting line and goes across to the right one. You will use #5 perle cotton, one colour to make the large crosses, as you did in Row One. Start your stitching twelve threads down from the Hardanger clock. B Row Six 13 Row Seven: Bugle Beads and Seed Beads This row was stitched from the centre basting lines out to each side. Use the white sewing thread doubled in your quilting needle to stitch the beads on. For each of the units, stitch the bugle beads on first and then the seed beads. To get the angle of each of the bugle beads, use a five by five spacing (down five and over five). The seed bead shares the same centre hole and then the needle goes down in the thread above. There are two empty threads between each of the bugle beads along the bottom of this pattern. There should be four empty threads above and below this stitch when it is complete. Start your stitching five threads down from the Smyrna crosses on the centre basting line. Fall 2013 Page 10

11 Crossed stitches sampler, continued... Row Seven Row Eight: Cross Stitch Saying This saying is cross stitched using three strands of the variegated floss. Each X covers a two by two square. Follow the graphed diagram to position the saying as shown or you could choose to use a saying or your own! You might wish to graph the letters out first before starting to stitch. Row Eight Row Nine: Herringbone Row Nine There are four empty threads above and below the row of Herringbone. The height of the Herringbone stitches is six threads high. Use #8 perle cotton for this stitch. The needle will point to your left hand as you make the stitches, even though you will be stitching to the right (for right handed stitchers). There is a compensating stitch at the beginning and end of this row. Start this stitch seven threads below the saying and on the left hand basting line. Follow the diagram on the graph. Row Ten: Smyrna Gone Wrong This stitch uses the two shades of #5 perle cotton. Compensating You will be stitching the large X s again from the Stitches left basting line to the right basting line, but you will place the pluses in the space between each of the X s. It will look like the upright cross is surrounded by a diamond. You will start and end with compensating stitches, so that the diamond pattern works out evenly. The compensating stitches will form only half of the large cross. Start stitching eight threads below the Herringbone stitch. Row Ten Fall 2013 Page 11

12 Crossed stitches sampler, continued... Row Eleven: Name, Heart and Date (Cross stitched) Use three strands of the variegated floss to stitch the cross stitched initials and date. You will need to graph out your initials on the chart provided below, if you initial hasn t been used in the saying! You can add the heart if you wish. Row Twelve: Crossed Corners (Rice Stitch) Repeat Row One using the #5 perle cotton. You may wish to reverse the colours. Finishing To make your sampler into a bell pull, you will need to hem each of the lengthwise sides using a slip stitched hem. The top and bottom edges will be wrapped around the doweling and then slip stitched in place. To slip stitch, you must fold the edge twice (1/4 inch for each fold) and press the edge. Use a single white thread in your quilting needle and a small knot in the end of the thread. Take a TINY sideways stitch through the fabric and the folded edge of the hem. Next, slide the needle into the fold and travel inside the fold for about 1/4 inch, bringing the needle back out along the folded edge. Now, take another sideways stitch catching the fabric and the folded edge as you did the first time. Continue sliding through the fold, sideways stitch, slide, sideways stitch, until you reach the end of the hem. You could also use the sampler for the centre of a pillow. Fabric strips need to be added to each of the sides first and then added to the top and bottom. You should have a pillow or cushion to measure first, in order to calculate the width of the fabric strips to add. Your sampler could also be framed. Fall 2013 Page 12
