5 Is it time to renew? Oh Goody! 9 section plastic binder page filled with canvas and paper One kit: Cat Pincushion, Crewel Needlecase, Cardstock Bookmarks and Notecards, Beaded Stitching Chatelaine, Artist Trading Cards, Shisha Ornaments or Rhodes Stitch Sampler Qu est ce qui est vert, blanc, rouge, bleu et qui est trempe dans la vinaigrette? If this is your last issue, a notice will be on the front page of your newsletter. Send in your renewal of $15 to continue your membership. You will continue to receive the Youth Embroiderers News, goodies, access to affordable correspondence courses, EAC exhibitions, Eleanor Thomas Youth Award, Leonida Leatherdale Library, prizes, PLUS much more - so, please don t let your membership expire. See page 13 for the renewal form, if you want to use it. Otherwise, just send in your cheque or use a credit card on the EAC secure site. Don t drop your membership! Try a New Stitch...Samples Holder Part of your goodies this issue is a plastic binder page that has 9 sections that can hold a 2.5 x 3.5 sample. Each section in your holder has a piece of canvas and a piece of paper. The paper is for writing the name of the stitch and the stitching instructions. Put them into a special binder and you have a handy reference for stitches. As you can see, I have filled one with two Try a New Stitch samples (Loop Stitch and Herringbone Stitch) and 4 face samples for a Cat Pincushion project. I still have room for 3 more Try a New Stitch samples. Now, where did I put them? If you don t want to make your own handy stitch reference binder, you can take out the canvas and paper and put in Artist Trading Cards or any other little stitching treasures you have. Many, many thanks to the Vancouver Guild of Embroiderers for this idea and for the donation of the plastic pages. I will give them out with each issue until they re all gone. I hope you have a lot of fun with your pages! Diagrams and directions by Linda Brenner. Licensed to Embroiderers Association of Canada, Inc. Page 5

6 Eleanor Thomas Youth Award The deadline for the Eleanor Thomas Youth Award (ETYA) is October 31st. Now that you know the deadline, just what is the Eleanor Thomas Youth Award? This is a program developed for EAC Youth Embroiderers which allows you to get financial assistance to purchase an embroidery-related book for your library or your Youth Chapter s library, take a correspondence course in embroidery, attend an embroidery workshop in your area, or attend the annual EAC Seminar. To apply for the Award, you must be a member in good standing with EAC, aged 9-17 years (for the Seminar Sponsorship, aged years) and be a Chapter or National member. You may request the Award for more than one category at a time and may receive the Award more than once. You may also apply for the Award as reimbursement of a completed category, with receipts. You are also required to abide by the requirements pertaining to the particular category. Two of the four categories of the Award are: 1. Book Purchase Youth members may request funds to purchase a book for their personal use and ownership. The basis for this purchase would be that the member wishes to use it for research for an embroidery project, as an aid for a course/class, or to assist with designing their own projects. The Youth member is required to write a book review with an overview of the book and include how it was used and how it benefited the member. The review will be published in Youth Embroiderers News and/or Embroidery Canada. Chapter Purchase Books purchased for Chapter use with ETYA funds will remain in the Chapter library until such time that the Chapter disbands, when the book(s) become the property of EAC. The books may remain in the sponsoring Chapter library or sent to the Leonida Leatherdale Needle Arts Library at EAC expense. 2. Correspondence Courses - Youth members may request funds to cover the course fees only to take a Youth Embroiderers Correspondence Course or an EAC Group Correspondence Course. The Youth Chapter can also apply to take a correspondence course together. The Youth Chapter/Youth Member will submit the name(s), age(s) and Chapter name of all prospective students, the specific course requested and the amount of the course fees. Each Youth member is responsible for paying for all course materials and the postage to and from the counsellor for forwarding the required embroidery at the required times. ETYA funds are not to be used for this. Each application must be endorsed by the Chapter leader or parent of the Youth member who will act as a liaison between the counsellor and the applicant. Each Youth member agrees to complete the course within the required time. The next pages provide the application forms for these two categories. The last two categories of the Award will be covered in the next newsletter. Pendue au plafond, je rends service, mais sur les pieds, je fais mal. Qui suis-je? Page 6

A prize has been mailed to her for sharing her embroidery piece with us. Page 9

10 Stitcher s Alphabet From the Aran Sweater to the Zig Zag Stitch, the love of needlework is this alphabet s theme. Each letter block represents a unique stitching pleasure possessed by the hearts and hands of stitchers everywhere. They can be stitched, beaded, and embellished as individual motifs or stitched together on your fabric of choice to create a Stitcher s Sampler. The model pictured here was stitched over two threads on 28 count Tea-Dyed Monaco by Charles Craft. Finished dimensions will vary depending on fabric count and placement of the blocks in the composition. Cross Stitch & Bead If stitching on 14 to 18 count fabric, use 2 strands of floss to cross stitch and also bead the motif. If you have trouble threading a beading needle with 2 strands of floss, put 1 strand of floss through the eye and pull the end down so there are 2 working strands. Back Stitch Using 3 strands of DMC White floss and 2 strands of DMC 3032, back stitch the sweater as charged. What kind of stones are never found in the ocean? Page 10
