1 The roid Is Not or Sale Rey & -8 Quilt Pattern Like many fans of the Star Wars films, I was excited to meet the new movie s heroine, Rey. fter so many years of fantasy/action movies dominated by male heroes, I m thrilled to have a female force to cheer for! Several of my friends with young daughters told me how empowered and inspired their girls felt by seeing Rey in the movie, and they are now on the hunt for things to buy and make that include both Rey and the charming droid, -8. Thus, I decided to design a quilt pattern to answer that need. I believe strongly that our girls need to have great female role models, and should be able to have them on their quilts too. This pattern is R - please consider it my contribution to inspiring our girls to be strong, capable, and caring, just like Rey. Note: This pattern is for personal use only. You may not sell items made from this pattern. SI INO OR YOU T STRT UPTS: o to to check if there are updates to this pattern. abrics: This pattern assumes your full width of fabric (WO) is at least 40 wide once the selvedges are removed. Remove the selvedges from all strips as you cut. asic Quilting Skills: This pattern assumes you know how to use rotary cutting tools and sew a quarter-inch seam. If you don t have a handle on these things yet, pop into your local quilt store and get a lesson or two. Once you have your basic construction skills down quilting becomes a lot more fun! Pattern templates: There are a few pieces of this pattern that are cut from templates (see last pages). e sure to set your printer for ctual Size (uncheck Shrink To it if that s an option). Tape the template pages together using the registration marks, and cut them out with paper scissors. ll templates include seam allowance so no need to add it. asic inishing Skills: This pattern also assumes you know how to add borders, construct a back, layer a quilt, quilt it (or send it out!) and put on the binding. gain, check with your local quilt store for lessons or youtube.com for tutorials if you need a hand. Pressing: In general, press all seams after sewing toward the darkest fabric when possible (or in the direction that fights back at you the least) unless the pattern specifically tells you to press a certain way. SSMLY OVRVIW This quilt is designed to need no more than the most basic straight seam piecing skills. It s made up mostly of squares, strips, rectangles, and triangles. The major body parts are made in blocks (see below), then the blocks are assembled with background squares to finish the quilt top. The instructions cover fabric cutting and assembly, one section at a time, so you have a minimum of cut pieces (to lose or misplace!) on your worktable at once. NOT: lways check scraps from prior steps before cutting new strips for any of the steps listed below. 3 ONSTRUTION TNIQUS While all the seams are straight strip or block construction, several of them involve skinny pieces that like to shift. o your best to have a consistent scant 1/4 seam allowance! spritz of starch or sizing can help stop the wiggles, as can using a generous number of pins. In all cases, the triangles in this pattern are added using the snowball technique. Two ways to snowball are decribed below: SNOWLL Technique 1 (with marking): ow to Snowball a orner needle irst, mark a diagonal line across the wrong side of the top square (the one that will make a triangle). Place the square onto its partner, right sides together, aligning them at the corner. Sew across the marked line. Trim away the waste triangle, leaving a 1/4 seam allowance. Press the triangle open (press the seam in either direction as suits your fabric choices best). tape SNOWLL Technique 2 (no marking): Place a piece of colored tape on your sewing machine bed, with one long edge making a straight line to the needle (but not over the feed dogs). Pair the snowball square and its partner, right sides together. Place one point of the snowball at the needle, and align the opposite corner with the tape. Sew, keeping the opposite corner aligned with the tape until the seam is complete. Trim away the waste triangle, leaving a 1/4 seam allowance. Press the triangle open (press the seam in either direction as suits your fabric choices best).
