1 Evening Star Quilters Guild - The Stitch Line A Note From the ESQG President JANUARY, VOLUME 1 I find that the end of the year is often a time of reflection. As some of you know, it was a rough year for my husband and me as we lost my husband's Uncle Frank to cancer and my husband's father, Harry, to COPD. In clearing out the family items at Uncle Frank's in Dover, NJ, a home known only to two families since 1928, but which included four generations of Frank's family, we came across several tins and jars of buttons. Clearly upon cleaning them, they had been accumulated carefully over many years as some still contained the thread with which they'd been attached and others, though mismatched and covered in dust, still held their own beauty of ages past. Buttons from shirts, from navy uniforms, from coats, and from dresses; the women of the Brusky clan carefully and painstakingly saved most of their treasured buttons and sealed them away in containers throughout the house. What is the fascination with buttons? Today, they are incredibly expensive to buy, but perhaps they were back then as well. Understandably, they were necessary during the depression, especially when children were running about and constantly growing. But still...why the fascination with buttons? Did you know there is a museum in Ohio, the Warther Museum, mostly known for the train carvings of Mooney Warther, but it also holds the world's largest collection of buttons? 73,000 buttons are displayed by his wife Frieda, a Swiss woman whose patience as a child earned her the gift of her mother's button collection. As she aged, her friends added to her collection and Frieda began building designs and jewelry with her buttons, and despite the enormous amount of buttons on display today, there are still thousands more in storage that may never see the light of day. I've seen this collection and it was enormous back when I saw it, but displayed as beautiful works of art! It is certainly worth visiting. And funny enough, the little town in Ohio where the museum still stands... is Dover. Button up folks! Winter is here! See you Tuesday!! Cynthia A. Sucker for Snowmen Show & Tell Are you a sucker for snowmen? If you are, or even if you are not, bring in your snowman quilts to share at the January meeting! Our frosty little friends usually delight the crowds, even before the snow starts to fall. Roll it up, and wiggle in the carrot, bring a couple of buttons of coal... let's see your abominable snow quilts!

2 EVENING STAR QUILTERS GUILD - THE STITCH LINE Page 2 Raffle Quilt Winner Announced! The winner of the 2018 blue and white raffle quilt was Martha Gordon of Mansfield Twp, NJ! Martha bought her ticket at the Warren County Fair and said she just loved the quilt! Martha's husband is recovering from recent heart bypass surgery and the two had already decided not to get each other gifts for Christmas. Martha said the fact that they caught the problem when they did was gift enough for her, and her husband is recovering nicely. We were happy to present her with the queen size quilt, and we hope that they receive additional comfort from our quilt as the they enjoy the blessings of the season. UFO Dressed to the Nine's! The monthly UFO challenge addresses Line #9 for the January meeting. Out of your 99 thousand quilts on the wall to the cat with 9 lives, dress up your item #9 for the next guild meeting! Funny story: When my daughter was little, and we lived in PA, I listened to Oldies 99 on the radio. They did traffic reports on the nines (9:09, 9:19, 9:29, etc.) every morning. One morning we were running late, and the announcer said, There's plenty of fog in the area, so take it slow! And that's traffic on the 9's on Oldies 99! I looked around and said, Huh, we don't have any fog here!, to which my daughter excitedly replied, Yeah! It's a good thing we aren't traveling on the nines! Quilts of Valor Block Pot-Luck Theresa will be out of town for the January meeting, but left instructions that we are to bring in whichever block we wish for this month. Using the Ohio Star pattern or the Log Cabin block pattern from previous meetings, please make another block, either the Ohio Star in red or blue, or the Log Cabin in either red or blue. All the blocks will be used to create quilts, and most likely next month, Theresa will be able to determine which blocks we need more of in order to create the design she has in mind. Thank you for your contributions! 2019 Quilt Show Charity Presentations Anyone interested in promoting their favorite charity to be supported by our biennial quilt show this fall must present their suggestions at the January meeting. Brochures are welcome, but if all you have is a story to tell, then please do so! The guild will vote on the charity this month, and it is up to the presenter whether they will head the sub-committee during the show or appoint someone else to run the event. Even if you are unsure of that portion of the proposal, please present your charity at the January meeting. We look forward to hearing from several of you!! 2019 Raffle Quilt Assembly Workshop Our Stitches in Hope this month will be used to assemble the 2019 blue and yellow raffle quilt. Karen Anderson has the pattern and fabrics all set, we just need members with machines and thread to get it going. Anyone who would like to help with this project, please join us, January 12, from 9 am to 3 pm, at St. John's Methodist Church in Hope, NJ. If you cannot bring your machine, please come and help cut and iron. Many hands make light work! You'll enjoy seeing how this Irish Chain meets Bargello comes together. Lunch will be provided by the guild for this event. Mystery Machine at Work! There's been a lot of prep work for this one, so if you haven't already joined, you need to do it soon. The Mystery Quilt workshop is, February 2, from 9 am to 3 pm, at St. John's Methodist Church in Hope, NJ (snow date Feb. 9th). It's scrappy, it's three color families, it's a lot of flying geese, and a lot of fun! There is still time to join in and get started prior to the date. See Marlene Marlowe at the meeting if you need any of the instructions or have any questions. Lunch will be provided by the guild the day of the event. Quilt Show Committee Meeting The next show committee meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 5th, at 6 pm, in the library. Please plan to attend. Crazy Patch Border Workshop Sharon Rehrig will host the Crazy Patch Border Workshop on, April 13, from 9 am to 3 pm, at St. John's Methodist Church in Hope, NJ. Anyone interested in participating, please sign up with Irene. The class is $15 per member. Sharon is a founding member of our guild and has tutored numerous men and women in the art of quilting. She has a wealth of knowledge and is the fixer of all things quilted. You don't want to miss her class, and the amazing work she will inspire you to do. Walker Bags Workshop Wanders to May The walker bag workshop has been postponed from January to May this year. If anyone comes across good sales on pre-quilted fabrics between now and May, please pick up 1-yard cuts to be used in creating our walker bags. See our Treasurer, Sue DeCamp for reimbursement, as necessary.

3 JANUARY, 2019 Page 3 What Makes a Quilter Tick? Our February meeting, on Tuesday, February 12th, welcomes David Sirota with his humorous lecture on What Makes a Quilter Tick? A humorous look in the mirror. David began quilting in the 1990's when he decided to make kitchen curtains for himself, and found Alex Anderson's Simply Quilts program on television and became hooked on quilting. David offers a fun-filled, interactive look at quilters and our little quirks, passions, and obsessions. Don't bring your own mirrors. I think you'll find a kindred spirit in the person on either side of you at this meeting. Bring your hankies, there will be tears of laughter before the night is through. Pray for good weather! More information to follow. A Ray of Sunshine Please continue to remember Bob & Judy Zeitler in your prayers. Executive Board /Dinner Meeting Slated The Executive Board/Dinner Meeting will be held at Cynthia Smith's house on Tuesday, January 15, at 6:30 pm. Please be sure to Cindy if you plan to attend.

A big thank you goes out to Audrey Planer, Irene Compton, Darlene Kerr, and Sharon Kubich for organizing and running the Christmas Party last month. The food was fabulous, and the activities were enjoyed by everyone. We had a nice turn out for our holiday fun, giving everyone a chance to socialize and relax. Thank you, ladies!
