Perhaps you opted for Quilt- Con in Savannah instead. Either way, quilt shows are a wonderful place to admire others work, discover new trends and find inspiration for our own work. You can take classes from internationally known quilters to discover new techniques and styles of working. And of course, there are the vendors to lure us in with their wonderful fabrics and notions that you may not be able to find locally, or may not even have known existed. Our own QU Quilt Show offers all these things! The opportunity to share our work no matter our skill level is rewarding. The classes rival those you can take anywhere, and our vendors are the envy of any other quilt show in the area. It s no wonder that people attend by the busloads, from out of town and out of state. I hope you ll consider supporting our wonderful show by attending, and by volunteering to do one of the many jobs that are involved in running this show. Many are sit-down jobs, and only a few hours are required for most jobs. Please be an active part of the QU community - you ll get so much more satisfaction from your membership by meeting new people with the same interests, and contributing to our common love of quilts and quilting by volunteering. Speaking of volunteers, let s all thank Marianne Hooker for another wonderful program - Marisela Burke QU meetings will take place at: Sangster Elementary School 7420 Reservation Drive Springfield, VA nd and 4th Wednesdays, 7pm Except for March 22, which is at Burke Centre Library Rumberg and her Zentangles. Eight of us joined her for a Saturday workshop that was fun and informative. We learned new-to-us techniques, and shared a lot of laughter and fun. Marisela is an enthusiastic teacher with energy to spare. Consider visiting her at the Fiber Arts Co-op in Building 6 at the Lorton Workhouse. She shares a space with 9 other fiber artists, all of whom are eager to share their passions. This month Marianne brings us Paula Harr, a tee shirt quilt designer. Continued on p. 5

Page 5 President s letter continued from p. 1 April brings the auction, only a month away on April 5th. Donations have been slow so far. Please bring your donations, auction ready if possible, to Diana Hoefke at the next 2 March meetings. You can donate anything quilt related that you can think up, for the bag auction, the silent auction, or the oral one. Fabric is always popular of course, but new or used notions, books, magazines, embellishments and supplies for fiber art are welcome, as well as services such as quilting, binding, and teaching. You might even consider hosting a weekend retreat at your summer house! This is our biggest fundraiser for the year, so please be generous. We use the money to provide speakers, support our charity quilt program with batting and fabric, and to subsidize things like the winter social that we all enjoy so much. Above all, enjoy each other and our mutual passsion. Keep on quilting! Piecefully, Barb Haymarket Quilter s Unlimited will be hosting its annual auction on Thursday, April 6th, starting at 6 p.m. for the Auction Preview and Buy-It-Now, and starting at 7 p.m. for the live auction. This is a wonderful opportunity to purchase quilts, wall hangings, bags, and quilting related items, such as fabric, notions, patterns, services, etc. Auction will be at Alvey Elementary School, 5300 Waverly Farm Drive, Haymarket, VA Midnight Madness Midnight Madness will be held on Friday, March 24, 2017 from 5:30 pm to midnight at the Quilter s Studio, 9600 Main St., Suite L in Fairfax. Come join us for an evening of sewing and socializing with friends. Cost of $25 will include dinner, drinks, room rental and a *surprise*. Signups will be held at the February and March meetings. Hope to see you there! Organizer: Karen Brewster (703) /kgbnva@gmail.com.
Page 6 Spring Retreat 2017 Our Just Ducky Retreat is April 27-30, More than 70 of us will be diving into a great weekend. We will start earlier at 1pm on Thursday! And, stay later. We can sew until 3pm on Sunday. Registration will close on Wednesday, March 22 at the close of the program meeting, so that we can go ahead and purchase supplies. Dick Stohr has agreed to come out to Winchester on Saturday to sharpen all of your scissors and knives. $5.00 all kinds and sizes. Put each item in a zip lock bag with $5.00 and write your name on the bag. The brochure will be sent out to every duckling very soon. You will see that everything will be Just Ducky! Brought to you by the Bumbling Block Party Bee.
Page 7 Coming to Burke QU March 2017: For those of you new to Burke QU, the Ways and Means fabric sale is one of two annual fundraisers that support the incredible programs and events offered throughout the year. Two or more new color ways of coordinated fabrics, usually in fat quarters, are made available during the spring. The committee selects the fabrics, cuts and bundles them and provides a free pattern to get you started! It s that easy!! The Burke Ways and Means Committee is pleased to announce two opportunities in March. March 8 Limited quantities of Quilting on a Whim beauties from previous years will be available in quick take bundles of 4 and 5 fat quarters. March 22 - Quilting on a WhiM will debut two new color ways just in time to shake off the chill of winter and to get ready for SPRING and RETREAT!! Each bundle will include 16 fabulous fat quarters that you may create with the free pattern included with the bundle or in a pattern of your choice. Your designs with the Ways and Means bundles are always amazing and we love seeing your finished creations! Ways and Means Committee: Susan Fernandez, Meghan Betts, Linda Snow, and our long distance members: Patricia Scott and Diane Murtha Don t think too much, You ll create a problem that wasn t even there in the first place.

Page 9 Board Positions for Next Year It s hard to believe that it is already time to start thinking about our board for next year ( ). Many of us still have holiday decorations up; there are probably the remains of delicious treats that need to be finished off; belated greeting cards are still arriving in mailboxes. Getting back into the regular routine can be hard sometimes. But some folks are thinking about new activities or actions (okay, let s call them resolutions ) for this new year. If you are wondering about trying something new or different, please give the idea of serving on the board of the Burke Chapter of QU some thought. Right now we have openings in almost every position: President, First Vice President (Admin), Secretary, Treasurer and Nominations. Marianne Hooker has agreed to stay on as Second Vice President (Programs) but she needs a shadow someone who will assist her through the next board year and then take over as 2nd VP for The Burke QU board is a great way to give back to our guild, and as a board member you have an active say in how the year goes and what kind of activities we get involved in. If you have any questions about the various job descriptions or what the time commitment is for any of them, please talk to the current officer or to Sharon Thompson (Nominations). You can contact Sharon by phone ( ) or (thompies5@comcast.net).
Page 10 Burke QU Business Meeting Minutes, February 8, 2017 President Barb Sherwood called the meeting to order at 7:36 pm and welcomed everyone. There were three visitors present. Minutes: Minutes from the November 9, 2016 meeting were printed in the December newsletter. A motion was made by Jean Taylor and seconded by Virginia Fritsche that the minutes be approved as published in the newsletter. The motion carried by voice vote. Old Business: Last meeting we discussed possible additional fundraisers. After careful review of the budget and expenses, Barb announced the chapter does not need to do additional fundraising. Quilt Show: Burke s assignment on the Quilt Show matrix is the Boutique. Chapters can switch jobs if each chapter is agreeable. Haymarket has reached out to Burke and asked for the Boutique. They have been assigned Show Financials. Gen Myers said the show financials is an easy job. All the paperwork is done, just need to order wristbands, etc. It was voted to exchange jobs with Haymarket and carried by voice vote. A Show Chair for next year has possibly been found. Betsy Stone was not at the meeting to confirm. In addition to the new Outreach position for Big QU each chapter is also to have an Outreach person. There is still a need for paid workers for the setup and take down. If you know anyone over 18, able to climb ladders and hang quilts who is interested, please have them contact Betsy Stone. The pay is $12 per hour. Other News Barb made a call for a volunteer to do the By-Law review. They need to review the existing by-laws, compare them to big QU and to our current practices. The new website is up. Please register your quilts for the show and sign up for classes. Website is Announcements: Sangster Elementary School Charity Quilt Sew-in: The Charity quilt held January 28 th. Attendance was about 36. Debbie thanked all who came and brought soups, salads and desserts. Prior to the sew-in we had 165 quilts and 160 hats completed. The blocks for solider quilts were being assembled. It appears we will have about three quilts.
Page 11 Burke QU Business Meeting Minutes, cont. Program: Our speaker at the February 22 nd meeting will be Marisela Rumberg. She will lecture on Zentangle quilting. She will also have a workshop on Saturday, February 25 th at Burke United Methodist Church. Fee for workshop will be $50. Midnight Madness: Karen Brewster announced that Midnight Madness will be Friday, March 24 th at Quilters Studio from 5:30 pm to midnight. Dinner will be ordered from Panera. Please see her at break to sign up. Fee is $25. Quilt Collector: Renee Castrop announced she had to cancel the days reserved at Burke Center Library for Quilt Show entry photos as the room is not large enough for large quilts. She will be taking phots at the next meeting, at Pohick Library on February 25 th and by arrangement at her home. Auction: Diana Hoefke reminded everyone the auction is scheduled from April 5 th. Items need to be auction ready. She is asking you have a card with a description of items, who donated them and estimated value. Magazines and books need to be 2010 or later. Volunteers are needed for setup. We are doing bag, silent and live auctions again this year. Kathye Gillette will be the auctioneer. Bag auction tickets are now on sale. Spring Retreat Sign up is underway and we have 70 so far. Room reservations are also available at $90 per night. Mention Burke Quilters when making reservations with Hampton Inn to get our discounted rate. If you need a roommate let Rita know, there are a few people looking for a roomie. Nomination: Sharon Thompson is looking for volunteers for next year s officers. No hard sell but it you have questions about job duties please contact Sharon. The meeting took a break and will resume at 8:10 pm with Show and Tell. Show and Tell with prize drawings and name tag prize drawings. The Challenge UFO quilts also had a prize drawing. The next number for the UFO Challenge is 2. There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 8:29 pm. Respectfully Submitted, Karen Brewster Secretary
