1 Coastal Prairie Quilt Guild Of Texas June 2018 Meetings: June 6 3-5p -Board Meeting June 6 Evening Meeting 6:45-8:30p June no mtg. Day/ Business10a-12p Meetings held First United Methodist 3900 Lexington Blvd, Missouri City, TX Inside this President s letter 1 Programs, Community, Service, 2-4 Quilts of Valor 4 Quilt Show 5 Birthdays, Membership, Rep at 6 CPQG Members, Volume 10 Issue 10 PRESIDENT S LETTER: Mark Towle I hope everyone had a peaceful and enjoyable Memorial Day!!! June and July are quiet months for the guild this year. June there will only be an evening meeting and board meeting both on June 6 th. In July there is only a day meeting (July 19) and a board meeting (July 11). Do not forget to signup for the July workshop (Quiltsmart with printed interfacing with Veronica Cox). The countdown continues: 3 months to the quilt show. The deadline for entry forms for your quilts is July 19. I challenge everyone to enter a quilt in the show. We love to see your quilts. The election of board members for the board will occur in July. The nominating committee has been working hard to find people interested in guiding the guild by being on the Board. The last update was that they were still looking for someone to be President-Elect. If you are interested in being President-Elect, please contact the nominating committee. This is your opportunity to impact the future direction of the guild. Have a wonderful month!!! Mark Bees, 9 Minutes, Bylaws 12 -

2 Programs by Gwen Goldsberry Lisa started quilting in 1993, learning any type of quilting she could. She quickly fell in love with applique, and in particular pictorial applique. Over the years she has made and given away a number of these quilts as gifts to family and friends. After learning a variety of techniques, she has combined methods to come up with her own unique way of making a pictorial quilt. In the evening meeting. you will be treated to a "step by step" of one of these methods. and watch how one of her pictorial quilts "Edmonton" was made. By the end of the program you should be inspired and well equipped to make your own using your own pictures! Financials by Diane Hickey

3 Membership by Pam Biswas The nominating committee has met and has been successful in getting volunteers for several of the open board positions for the year. Since we have only one more general meeting prior to the July elections at the July day meeting, we are submitting an appeal to all members to consider volunteering for one of the remaining open positions. As we all know, the guild cannot continue to function without a slate of officers. Therefore, the nominating committee is appealing to each of you to consider a position to keep YOUR guild functioning. Below you will find a brief description of the duties for the remaining open positions. President elect Assists the President as needed Presides at board, regular and special called meetings in the absence of the President. Moves up to the President position the following year. Coordinates the end-of-term appreciation gift for the President. Performs all other duties pertinent to the office. Program elect Plans, schedules and contracts speakers and programs for the following year. Assists the Program Chair (First Vice President-Programs) when needed. Moves up to the First Vice President-Programs position the following year. Acts as liaison between speakers regarding programs, contracts and workshop. Performs all other duties pertinent to the office. Workshop elect Chooses workshops, working in conjunction with the Program Chair Elect to coordinate and schedule the following year s workshops. Assists the Workshop Chair when needed. Moves up to the Workshop Chair position the following year. Performs all other duties pertinent to the office. Each of the above positions are a vital part of the Guild function and to fulfill the purpose of our guild. If you have any questions or wish to volunteer for one of the open positions, please feel free to contact one of the nominating committee members listed below. Joan Bell Linda Towle

4 QUILT SHOW NEWS by Barb Wall QUILT SHOW: A Decade in Stitches September 7-8, Stafford Centre It s crunch time! We have just until the July 19 guild meeting to submit our entry forms. Your quilt doesn t have to be totally finished, but does need to be photographable, meaning the top must be complete enough to get a good quality picture. One section of the form that seems to cause some anxiety is the Quilt History. No worries because, thanks to our own Mary Goodman, we have some great tips on Writing Your Quilt Story! Thanks, Mary, for letting us reprint this from 2016, with a few edits. *Content-What inspired you to make this particular quilt? Was it a workshop or speaker, or maybe a special family event such as a birth or wedding? Did something extraordinary or interesting happen while you were making the quilt? Perhaps your cat jumped up on the table and rearranged the block layout you d been working on for hours. *Form-Please remember, 50 words or less. That s only a few sentences, so: 1) write out your story and count the words, or just watch the word count on your computer, and edit before putting it on the entry form. 2) print as neatly as you can-someone will be transcribing what you ve written, 3) focus on one aspect of making the quilt, 4) remember, the public will be reading this, and 5) the story you tell brings your quilt to life for the viewer. Let your personality shine through and have fun with it! You don t have to use up your 50 words on the name, description or origin of your quilt. That s all recorded in other places on the entry form. Also, don t forget to sign up for one or more of the many areas where help is needed. It takes a huge number of volunteer hours to make our show a success, so we really need all hands on deck! A sign-up board and sheets will be available at all meetings through August, or contact Sherri Stringfield, sherristring@gmail.com. The next meeting of our full show committee will be Saturday, July 7, 10am-12 noon in the downstairs small meeting room at the University Branch Fort Bend Library. If you are a committee chair, now is the time we really need you to come as we are beginning to pull everything together.

5 Volume 10 Issue 10 Community Service by Sakeenah Mubashsh Community Service by Sakeenah Mubashshir. Greeting Guild Members Thursday, June 21, 2018, which was initially set as the Shop Hop Day has been given a new name Storage Unit Clean-up Day!!! In an effort to determine if a smaller Storage Unit might be more practical for the Guild, we will take this free day to clean out items that are no longer useful or suitable for quilts and/or blankets to be donated to the Charities we support. The focus is on the fabrics and other craft items only. Quilt Showcase and Workshop supplies will not be disturbed. Those who would like to come help, trust me, your assistance will be greatly appreciated. My plan is to arrive at the Storage Unit at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, June 21 st. American Mini Storage, 2604 FM 1092 Road, Missouri City, TX Thanks so much to the following members who helped with quilting, sewing, and crocheting over the past months: Cathy Price Grace Clarke Betty Stone Allison Etzler Barbara Baxter Sherrie Hogan Helen Wilems Susie Doe Shirley Grover Mary Ashcraft Joyce Jackson Debbie Penalber Judy Wolter Community Service truly appreciates the hard work that all members are doing for the Guild. 11 11 Coastal Prairie Quilt Guild Minutes of the April 4, 2018 Board Meeting (approved May 2, 2018) The meeting was called to order by Rebecca Trevino, President-elect at 3:02 pm at the Hickory Inn BBQ location on FM1092 in Missouri City. Board Members in attendance: Rebecca Trevino, Cathy Price, Judy Wolter, Diane Hickey, Diane Aleman, Kay Paul, Darlene Patin, and Sherri Stringfield. A quorum was present. Committee Members in attendance: Barb Wall and Sakeenah Mubashshir. The Minutes of the March 5 th, 2018 Board meeting were approved as presented. The Treasurer s Report from March 2018 was not available. Diane Aleman noted that the report was not in the April newsletter either. Discussion Points: Anniversary Items Rebecca Trevino distributed a report from Pauline Manes that indicates she is close to a minimum, but does not have the minimum yet. This will be discussed again tonight. By-Laws Changes Post Review The final draft of the changes is in the March and April newsletters for membership review. Discussion of any comments, concerns, etc. will be held at each of the meetings post publication. A vote on acceptance of these revisions will be held at the April business meeting. Standing Rules Changes Rebecca Trevino, Cathy Price, and Sherri Stringfield have met and prepared proposed changes to the Standing Rules that have resulted from the proposed changes to the By-Laws. Cathy Price sent these to the Board last week for review. The new items in section 8 were discussed. The vote on these will not be done until the By-Law changes are made. Donation Quilt 2019 Options on what to do for this year s quilt were discussed. There are several options available donated completed quilt, completed top that can be finished, and kits in various stages of completion. This will be announced to the membership tonight to see if a volunteer can be found to lead the project. The quilt must be finished enough to be photographed in July so that the Trifold can be published. Workshop-elect Co-chairs July Wolter and Darlene Patin will be co-chairs for this position on the board. They will count as a single vote. Judy and Darlene indicated that they are in the process of contacting various speakers and plan to attend the Coalition meeting next week to see what might be available thru that group. Kay Paul noted that the speaker that was scheduled for tonight has cancelled due to illness, but does workshops and may be a contact for next year. Judy and Darlene will also poll the group tonight for ideas. One suggestion is to schedule a bus trip to attend the Shop Hop in Waco in January where 40 shops are in one place. July Board Meeting Date The current date for the meeting would be July 4 th. Rebecca suggested ing Mark Towle with other possible meeting locations and dates since we have time to determine the date for the meeting. Nominating Committee It is time to form a nominating committee for next year s Board. Sherri Stringfield indicated she would be vacating the Rep-at-Large position. Cathy Price will be vacating the Secretary position. The Board member who will work on the committee must be leaving the Board this term. Other committee members not on the Board will be asked to volunteer for this tonight at the meeting.

12 It was noted that if the changes to the By-Laws are approved, the current election committee structure will be changed so that only the Second Vice President Membership would coordinate the election unless a written ballot is required and committee members are needed. Board/Committee Reports: Secretary: Cathy Price reported on the pricing for storage units in the area. All of the storage units on the price survey she distributed are climate controlled and within 5 miles of the FUMCMC. Sakeenah Mubashshir noted that she is planning a cleanup of the materials in the space for June 21 st. Each chair of a charity group will be asked to help organize the materials they need to have stored. Materials that are unusable will be donated or discarded. The group discussed that the fact that the combination on the unit has been known by a large number of individuals within the Guild since the current unit was set up. Judy Wolter made a motion that the current lock combination be changed or replaced if needed. Diane Aleman seconded the motion. The Board approved the update to the combination. Diane Hickey will find out if she has instruction for changing the combination. If the instructions are not found, a new lock may be needed. Representative-at-Large: Sherri Stringfield noted that the second Junk Hippie event is on July 14 th. An anonymous donor has agreed to pay the $150 dollar fee for this. This is for promotion of the Guild and the upcoming Quilt Show. Sherri needs 4 volunteers 2 from 8:30 am to 1 pm and 2 from 1 6 pm. She will ask for volunteers for the event tonight. Sherri is planning to make a road trip next week to various quilt shops in area to drop off Program Ad signup sheets, Save the Date Cards, and let them know about the show. She needs a volunteer to go with her. Treasurer: Diane Hickey checked with our bank and there is a charge to accept payments using the Square credit card reader. She will check into using Zell. Having the ability to accept credit payments at the show is highly recommended for both the Quilt Auction and the Artisan Market. Workshop Chair: Kay Paul reported that she will have the enlarged pattern and the grid fabric for the HMQG program this month. She needs help ing the PDF file to those attending and also printing the tutorial. Cathy Price volunteered to print and the files from Kay. There are a few open spaces in the workshop at this time. Kay will have the signup sheet available tonight. Sherri Stringfield has the fabric to donate to the HMQG for doing this workshop for us. The pattern for the May workshop has been changed to Broken Daisy. It requires less fabric and time and will fit the time allotted better. She will announce this tonight. Quilt Show 2018: Barb Wall reported that the meeting with Janice Schindeler to discuss the live auction was done and was very useful. The committee thinks that it would be good to have a couple of the auction quilts appraised and the appraisal included in the auction. Electronic payment should be accepted if possible. The other Guild auctioned about 20 quilts of various sizes. The small Quilt sale will be called an Artisan Market since it will not be just quilts for sale. The next meeting is April 14th at the Fort Bend University Branch Library from 10 noon. Volunteer signup will start in May. Sponsorships will be sold. There being no other business to come before the Board, the meeting was adjourned at 4:43 pm. Respectfully submitted, Cathy Price, Secretary Coastal Prairie Quilt Guild
