From the President s pen As always, thank you to our program presenters, Val Ansell, Sandra Radley and Judi McLaughlin for their From Thorns to Roses at our March meeting. Who knew you could make so many lovely quilts from scraps! Our April program promises to be fun and will feature our Guild members Trunk Show. Do you have a quilt you love and a quilt you hate? If so, please consider bringing them and participating in the April Trunk Show of The Quilt I Love &The Quilt I Hate. Well ladies, do you have your running shoes on; it s going to be a busy, busy April. There s a lot happening, so let s get going. The Challenge, Summer Dreamin, is due this month. It s not too late to create a little something as Elaine has allowed lots of leeway in her few rules challenge. If you haven t done so already, check it out at Early membership registration will be processed at our April meeting. It will be very helpful if members arrive with their registration forms completed and appropriate funds ($30.00) attached. The form can be printed from the website or found in the newsletter. Nominations will be presented in April. Please consider helping our guild in any way you can. Our grandmothers advice of many hands make light work is still true, but I think they forgot to add that many hands add up to receiving lots of fun. Be open. Treat yourself. Join in. Two members of the Parksville Quilt House Quilters Guild will be our guests at our April meeting. They will be displaying their raffle quilts and will have raffle and admission tickets for sale. Raffle tickets are $2.00 each and the admission price is $8.00 per day or $15.00 for a three day pass. Let s support our neighbouring guild! Please review the information in this newsletter regarding computer expenditures for the Treasurer. The Executive has approved a motion, which will be presented at the April meeting, to upgrade our current system. Discussion and a vote will be taken at that time. On a lighter note, one of the fun times at our meeting centres around the ticket draws, The Name Tag draw being amongst them. That is the ticket given by the Hospitality ladies as we sign in. There are two requirements in order to claim the prize; you must be a member and you must have your name tag with you preferably wearing it. Occasionally, the prize has been referred to as a Door Prize, which it is not. So let s see those chests proudly displaying our name tags, ladies. We have much of which to be proud. Don t forget, our next meeting will be on the regular third Wednesday. See you on the 15 th! Until then, happy quilting everyone! Submitted by: Norma Steven Notice of Motion: Computer purchase Computer technology is a rapidly changing dimension of modern communication. Five years is a lifetime in this area and the Treasurer s computer is more than four years old.
2 The current laptop and software have served us well, but are no longer adequate for the needs of the Nanaimo Quilt Guild. To better serve you and assist our Treasurer, the NQG Executive has approved the purchase of a new laptop and associated operational resources. Therefore, the following motion is being offered for your consideration. We will be voting on this motion at our April 15 th general meeting. The Motion: (Moved By Sue Creba; seconded by Pat Ryan) that the Nanaimo Quilt Guild authorize an expenditure of approximately $ for the purchase of a new laptop, programs, and set-up for use of the Guild Treasurer. Raffles The winners for our March meetings were: Mystery Fabric: Afternoon: Cheryl Tellier Evening: Val Ansell Show & Share: Afternoon: Evening: Becky Keizer Raffles: Afternoon: Linda Totzke, Yvonne Jans, Dorothy Baumel, Audrey Lloyd, Lynn Bentsen, Carol Bailey Evening: Val Ansell, Greta Simmons, Jeannette Blackmore Door Prize: Afternoon: Chris Mousseau Evening: Moire Porter We appreciate the generous donations from: Sue Creba, Norma Franks, Becky Keizer and Moire Porter. Come visit us at the Raffle table on our next meeting in April! Hugs, Maggie Pickard Raffles Committee Quilt Bee The Quilt Bee committee has decided to make available the few kits that were left over from our January Quilt Bee. If you would like to get started on a top for next year s Quilt Bee, please see us during the April and May meetings. You may choose a kit and we will take down your name then give you a reminder in October in case you ran out of time to complete the top over the summer! This may give you a little more time for all the wonderful quilts that we will all be making for the Quilt Show next June. Happy quilting! Carole Phinney Marlene Jones Nancy Lutes Page 2 of 9
3 Library News A great big thank you to everyone who returned their books to the March meeting. We still have a large number of books that are overdue. Please check your shelves again! See you at the April meeting. The Library Team Ballot Committee We need a member with computer skills to produce some forms. 4 Did You Know? Quilting in Public Places While reading a one of our Advertiser s Newsletters, mention was made of a National Stitch- in-public Day where people who do embroidery are invited to come out on a designated day, place, and to embroider in public. The one-day event, held in late September, is sponsored by the Embroiderers Association of Canada. The idea is to help promote an interest and awareness in handwork. Locally, the island Stitchery Guild has participated in this event and has used public places such as the Nanaimo Museum and the Harbour Front Branch of the Vancouver Island Regional Library. There doesn t seem to be a National Stitch oops Quilt-in-Public Day for quilting, but we do have a World Wide Quilt Day in March, and May is Quilt Month in Canada. Sometimes we have had Quilt Week in Nanaimo, proclaimed by the Mayor during the week of our Quilt Show. So do quilters need to have a designated one-day event to come out and quilt? Over the years our Guild has participated in various events where we have quilted in public. Places such as stores, shopping centres, art galleries, schools are just a few places we have set up in to promote and demonstrate quilting. Let s look back on a few of these events. In 1989, the Guild was invited to set up a display of quilts in the Visual and Performing Art Gallery run by the Nanaimo Arts Council. During the month-long display members worked in shifts sitting and stitching in the Gallery answering questions asked by the public when they came in to view the display. The event was well received and the Guild was invited back in 1986 and Sometimes the Guild has used shopping centres for some events, such as in 1987 for the Man-In-Motion Quilt-a-thon where members worked in shifts hands quilting a quilt to raise funds. We have used vacant stores for Quilt Registries where the public could watch and learn how to document a quilt. Other events, such as the Antique Road Show, in 2004, provided us with the opportunity to do a display of antique and modern quilts, along with demonstrating a variety of quilting techniques such as hand piecing, appliqué and hand quilting. Retail stores have also provided us with the opportunity to take quilting to the public. In 1993, the Guild was invited by the Manager, of Fanny s Fabrics, to set up a display and do demos in the store. Members brought handwork to do, and a quilt was placed in a frame for those who wanted to try hand quilting. The customers enjoyed the display, and we were invited back the following year. Page 4 of 9
5 To help promote Quilt Month in Canada, Wal-Mart invited the Guild, in 1999, to demonstrate how a quilt is made. Wal-Mart donated the fabrics, and customers watched as a team of our members cut the fabric and sewed it into a quilt top, which Wal-Mart donated to the Guild. The following year (2002) the Guild was invited back and this time the Lofty Ladies Satellite Group volunteered for the task. Over the years the Guild has gone into local elementary and secondary schools working with the students; the perfect opportunity to pass along some interest and knowledge of quilting to the next generation. The students have always been eager to learn and really enjoy the hands-on chance to try piecing or working on a quilting project. (See the Did You Know article in the June 2014 Newsletter.) Other locations we have used to quilt in public have included the Downtown Farmers Market (1999), the Vancouver Island Exhibition (VIEx) (2006, 2007, 2008), the Seniors Healthy Living Fair (2000), the Nanaimo Museum (2004), the Vancouver Island Regional Library the list goes on. But the best public place where we have quilted has to be when we do our annual Quilt Bee for Haven House and our Quilt Shows. These events have given us the chance to promote and encourage an interest in quilting and to prove that quilting has become more than a hobby for little old ladies. We have now become a caring and sharing community who not only make quilts for ourselves and our families, but we have reached out to share our knowledge, ideas and quilts with others. Marsha Whitmee and Greta Simmons History Committee Black Nine Patch Swap We had 28 participants for the purple patch swap in March. April will be the last month to bring in nine patches to swap; the colour for April is Yellow. I will bring your sorted yellow blocks to the May meeting. I would like to thank all the Guild members who have participated in the Nine Patch Swaps during the last two Guild years. I really enjoyed seeing all of the beautiful fabrics that you chose for your blocks and I have especially enjoyed seeing the beautiful quilt that were made from the cream blocks. I look forward to seeing your creations that will be made from the black nine patch blocks. Happy Quilting, Sherry Drebnicki sherryann.d@hotmail.com Page 5 of 9

Pat noted to members that we are to have a Members Trunk Show for next month and that will be with 2 quilts 1.)The Most Loved and 2.) The Least Loved. It is expected that the members who bring these quilts will speak to why they love or dislike them. It could be due to the fabric choice, colour or even pattern etc. Quilt Bee: Carol Phinney Carol note that the final total is in the newsletter Quilts Next month we will have kits together for members to sew over the summer. We are asking our generous members to donate a 10 square at the September, October or November meetings. Many members donated more than 1 quilt and the Pearls donated 40, thank-you ladies. It will give everyone a chance to familiarize themselves with the venue and see where the various committees will be placed throughout the facility. There is a lot of planning behind the scenes and I would say that the Quilt Show 2016 is progressing quite nicely. More people needed to help. We are also looking into 30 th pins to sell. A thought was that it could be a contest between the members to design our pin and the members could decide on it. Still in planning stage. 9 There being no further business Meeting Adjourned by President, Norma Steven Submitted by Ann Crawford, Secretary NQG Nominations Committee Report At our March Guild meeting, Lillian reviewed the positions that still needed to be filled, emphasizing that we need our key positions filled or we would not have a Guild or a Quilt Show to look forward to. The positions that are still outstanding are: 1. President 2. Secretary 3. Coffee afternoon 1 position 4. Membership evenings, assist as needed. 5. Program Committee - a few more assistants 6. Raffles afternoon (good for a group to do). It would really be nice if we could fill these before the nominations meeting in April. However, we need your support to go forward.
