A loop (Fig. 11) will be formed over the upper thread which then be pulled out straight. Place both thread ends under the slot of the presser. foot and draw toward the hack of the machine, leaving both threads three. or four inches long. I: Follow THREADING TWIN NEEDLES (See Fig. 3 for inserting needles.) abnve procedure w itla these exceptions Place thread, matching or contrasting in color, on both spool pins. Draw threads through separate eyelets in upper arm thread guides (2). Pass threads from right to left through front and hack tension discs and into corresponding spring (3, 4). Then treat both threads as one until you reach the needle eyes. Fig. H : notches of check Pass thread from the spool on the left through left needle arid thp thread from the right spool through the right needle.. c., STRAIGHT STITHING For lengthy periods of straight sewing when you are constructing a garment or making draperies, it is advisable to use the straight stitch presser foot and the straight stitch needle plate which are included in your accessory box. Both have narrow needle slots. Be sure to set stitch width at 0.
HANGING THE FOOT AND PLATE. To change presser foot (17, Fig. 1) loosen thumb screw 18 and remove zigzag foot. Replace with hinged narrow foot and tighten screw securely. To change needle plate (15, Fig. 1) remove screw and lift off with cover plate 16 attached. Hold needle plate with left hand and cover plate with the right. Press upper corner of cover plate (right side up) down slightly and slip pin from groove in needle plate. Avoid using too much pressure. When the pin is released the two plates will separate. Attach cover plate to straight stitch plate by reversing the above procedure. Silp pin on lower side of cover plate into groove on needle Plate. Insert tongue into square opening and slide upper pin into position. Put plates on machine and fasten securely with needle plate screw. 11 SETTING THE STITH LENGTH J] length of the stitch is regulated by the knob, 5, shown in Fig. 12. Near 0 is the shortest stitch (shown in indicator 11) and 4 is the longest. Turn the knob to the right to lengthen and to the left to shorten the stitch. Figures on indicator STITH LENGTH HART (Approximate) Number of stitches per inch No_Feeding SEWING IN REVERSE Fig. 12 When you wish to sew backward to tie the threads at the beginning or end of a seam, press in the button R, Fig. 12, as far as it will go. The machine will sew backward, as long as the button is held in.
Always adjust the upper tension with the presser foot down, as the tension is automatically released when it 9 9 ci 9 9ci. 9 9 I I 12 ADJUSTING THE TENSIONS is raised. To increase the tension On the upper thread, turn dial (Fig. 13) to the right, or clockwise. To decrease, turn to the left. The higher the number on the dial the tighter the tension, Before arlj Listing lower tension be sure that the machine is threaded properly. When necessary to change the bobbin tension, turn small screw (Fig. 14) on side of the bobbin case clockwise to tighten, counter clockwise te loosen. When the upper and rmder tensions are properly balanced, a perfect, stitch Will he formed with, both threads interlocking in fabric (Fig. 15). \Vben the upper tension is too tight, the lower thread is pulled up over the upper thread which is lying flat on the fabric (Fig. 16). When the under tension is too tight, the upper tinead forms ioops over the lower thread lying flat on the fabric (Fig. 17). 15 3 ADJUSTING PRESSURE AND FEEDING OF FABRI General Sewing. Usually for straight sewing and embroidery the pressure bar cap or darner release, 27, Fig. 18, is at its lowest position and the feed is at its highest level, with the button marked Up pressed all the way clown, Fig. 19. Sewing Thin or Light \Veight Fabrics. When higher pressure is required to sew satisfactorily on thin silk or flimsy material, the pressure cap should be about halfway down. Release all the way by pressing the snap lock, A, Fig. 20, and then press cap B down again to halfway spot. Lower the feed slightly by pss1 g the button marked Down to the halfway spot. Both Fig. 18 buttons will be at the same level. I)arni ng and Monogrammi ng. In order Fig. 19 Fig. 20 to move the fabric freely in any direction for darning, mending and certain kinds of free hand embroidery, release the pressure cap B completely by pressing down on the snap lock, A, Fig. 20. Press the button Down to its lowest position which drops the feed well below the needle plate. To return feed to normal, press button marked Up.
Have take-up lever at highest point before starting to sew. Do not try to help the feeding by pulling the material as this may deflect the needle and cause it to break. Place material and threads in position under the presser foot and lower the presser foot. Turn the hand wheel toward you until the needle is at its highest point. You are now ready to begin sewing. By having the needle at its highest point, it is not necessary to touch the hand wheel to start the machine. You merely press the control. The speed of the machine is regulated by increasing or decreasing the amount of pressure exerted on the control PREPARING TO SEW After threading, NEVER run machine without material between presser foot and feed dog. REMOVING THE WORK Be sure to stop the machine when the thread rake-up lever and needle bar are located at the highest position. Now raise the presser foot and draw the fabric back and to the left, Fig. 21 A and B, and pass the threads over the thread cutter. Pull down slightly, holding thread in both hands, so as not to bend the needle. Leave the ends of thread under the presser foot. Fig. 21A Fig. 21 B
15 REATIVE EMBROIDERY - f The satin stitch, Fig 22, which is the basis for most embroidery, is obtained by setting the stitch length as near 0 as possible without stopping the feeding action. The width may be set anywhere from just past 0 to the widest, 5. A raised effect is gained by reversing the stitch and retracing ihn row of satin stitch. Fig. 22 To operate the machine manually, producing embroidery patterns with your own skill and talent, using varia tions of the zigzag and satin stitch, be certain the zigzag foot is used. \\ ith the machine set for a short stitch length, different designs can be made by swinging the stitch width knob, 6, Fig. 23, back and forth het een 0 and 5, or any other combinations. Try setting the locks (12) at 1 and 5, 2 and 4, etc. Set a rhythm for yourself and then proceed. After a while you will become quite skillful, varying your designs by the speed of the machine, stitch length and width, and the manipulation of the knob. Fig. 23 a,.,-.

- L7 TWIN NEEDLE EMBROIDERY Be sure the zigzag foot and needle plate are on the machine, and thread the twin needles according to instructions on Page 10. (Zigzag foot must be used for twin needles even in straight stitching.) To do twin rows of zigzag, satin stitch, or embroidery, set the stitch width locks 12, Fig.. 23, at 0, 1, 2 or 3, never at 4 or 5. Turn the wheel by hand to be certain the twin needles do not strike either side of the needle plate hole. For double rows of straight stitching, lengthen the stitch and set the stitch width at zero. Obtain extra twin needles of the correct size from your authorized sewing machine dealer. EMBROIDERING WITH A HOOP It is easy to follow a stamped design or to work free hand when embroidering or monogramming. (See Fig. 25.) Release the pressure from the foot by pressing down the snap lock on the automatic darner. Push the drop feed button Down all the way. Stretch the fabric in an embroidery hoop, and place tinder the needle after rclnoving the presser foot. Set the stitch width at the size you prefer and lower the presser bar lifter. Then operate the machine at a rather high speech while moving the hoop slowly with both hands. \Vork earelully and be sure to keep fingers out of the path of the needle. Fig. 25
18 MAKING BUTTONHOLES First, mark the beginning and end of the buttonhole on fabric with a basting line or tailor s chalk. Make one on scrap fabric (following directions below) to be sure machine adjustments are correct. 1. for the end of the buttonhole. step 1, Fig. 26, stopping machine with needle in fabric at right side of stitching. Replace presser foot with buttonhole fool which is shorter and grooved deeply underneath to prevent piling up of thread. 2. Lock the stitch width at 2 /2 with the left lock and set the stitch length near 0. For a heavier buttonhole thread pearl cotton rhrongh the hole in the foot. 3. Lower needle carefully into the mark on fabric indicating the beginning of buttonhole. Si itch to the mark -I. Lift the presser foot and using the needle as a pivot, turn the fabric end for end. 5. Lower presser foot and turn hand wheel just enough to raise needle out of fabric. 6. Drop feed all the way down and hold stitch width knob at 3. Take fi e or six stitches to form bar tack, step 2, Fig. 26. I 7. Raise needle out of fabric and return Iced to UP U ill position and let stitch width return to 21/2. s S 8. Stitch second side of buttonhole, step 3. T T - E E 9. Make bar tack by repeating and 6, above (Step 1). p p JO. Return stitch width to 0 and take two or three 1 2 stitches to fasten bar threads and prevent ra cling. ut the buttonhole opening with the seam ripper, being carefuli1ot to cut the stitching. Fig 26 If you plan to make buttonholes on sheer or soft material, place tarlatan or paper, whieh can be torn away after stitching, under the fabric. And it is always wise to make several buttonholes on scraps of fabric before working on the garment. For narrower buttonholes, set the stitch width at less than 2, and turn stitch width knob to 4 or less for bar tack.
, Si L SEWING ON BUTTONS 19 i I 4, 4, 4, 4, - S 1. Remove hinged presser foot and attach button sewing foot, see Fig. 27 A, B and. 2, Turn zigzag stitch width knob to Push drop feed button Down all the way. 4. With the buttonhole foot in a raised position place button between foot and fabric so that the holes of the button line up with the needle, as shown in Fig. 27 B. Turn hand wheel toward you and test to see if the needle enters center of each hole. If not, adjust the stitch width by turning the knob to right or left until the needle clears each hole. Lock width at correct setting. 6 e Fig. 27 Fig. 27 A Fig. 27 B 5. When needle goes into the center of each hole, run the machine at medium speed, making five or six stitches. 6. r 0 lock the zigzag stitch and prevent raveling, set the stitch width at 0 and make a few straight stitches 111 the same hole. 7. If you wish you may place a rounded toothpick over the button, betw een the two holes, and sew button to fabric in regular way. Remove the toothpick and wind thread under button, forming a shank. Fasten. If a four hole button is to be sewn, follow the same procedure above for the tw o hole button. Now lift presser foot slightly and move fabric to permit stitching the remaining two holes. Hooks, snaps, etc., are sewn to the fabric with the same procedure as for sewing two hole buttons. I.4 I
p ci 9 ci Fig. 28 HOW TO USE AESSORIES NARROW HEMMER. With the needle at its highest position, replace regular presser foot with narrow hemmer (Fig. 28). For a plain narrow hem, make a 1/8 inch double fold for about two iflches along edge of fabric. Flold each end of the two inch fold, slip underneath hemmer. Bring fold up into the scroll of hemmer, draw forward to end and fasten with point of needle. Lower presser bar lifter. Gently pull ends of thread as you start stitching. Guide material slightly to right, and it will automatically take a double turn through scroll. LAE TRIMMED HEM. To sew a narrow hem and attach lace in one stitching, insert lace in the slot next to needle (Fig. 29). Sew hem as above, guiding lace under needle and hem into scroll. Fig. 29 Fig. 30 LAE EDGE WITH INVISiBLE STITHING. Hold lace 1/8 inch from raw edge on right side of fabric. Insert both in scroll as for plain narrow hem (Fig. 30). Let hem roll over and. sew in lace. Press lace out flat along edge with hem turned up. it is possible to have a little fullness in ]ace by feeding it freely under scroll.

Insert in hemmer scroll, allowing hem to roll over and sew in top fabric, making French seam. FLAT FELLED SEAM. Open out French seam and insert rolled edge in scroll of hemmer. Edgestitch t lay seam flat. rolled hem. HAND ROLtED EFFET. Use a narrow zigzag stitch, just wide enough to catch both edges of the narrow, QUILTING GUIDE. This guide for making parallel rows of stitching is attached by placing the pronged holder between the presser foot and the presser foot clamp screw (Fig. 31). Adjust the curved bar to press lightly on the fabric. By letting the guide ride on the first stitching line, successive rows will be an equal distance apart. When the bar is attached so that the curved part is to the r -. right of the needle, it may also serve as a seam width Fig. 31 Fig. 32 guide. SEAM GAUGE OR LOTH GUIDE. Use the seam gauge as a guide for straight seams and even rows of top stitching along edges of fabric. Fasten gauge with accompanying screw in threaded hole in bed of machine (Fig. 32).
