5 Page: 5of 7 TAP AND CLEARANCE DRILLS Thread systems are not only different in the pitch of the thread (the number of turns to the inch) but also in their shape, depth, clearances etc. Particularly with the smaller screws it is often possible to force ascrew threaded on one system into anut threaded on another. Todo so will often damage the screw, nut or both with the result that the connection will no longer have the proper strength. Even worse, if the wrong screw is taken out and aproper one reinserted, it too may no longer hold properly. Care should always be taken to identify the thread correctly. Unified National (UNC/UNF) This thread system (formerly National Coarse/National Fine) is mainly used on locomotives and equipment made in the US and Canada. In HO scale, 256 is used for truck bolsters and draft gear boxes while 080 is common for steam locomotive crank pins. The size of the screw also indicates the pitch of the thread (eg 256 is size 2with 56 threads to the inch. See page 2for atable of tap and clearance drills. METRIC The metric system (which has anumber of different standards) is found mainly on locomotives and equipment manufactured in Asia and continental Europe. This will cover virtually all brass locomotives, for example. The tiny screws areon the UNM standard and the larger screws on the British Standard, both of which are given below. All measurements are in millimeters and the pitch is the distance from the top of one thread to the top of the next one. The size of the thread is also the diameter of the body. It differs from other standards in that the largest size comes first and athread is referred to as, for example, 6BA. Measurements are in millimeters. The tap drill is given in inches (the drill number in brackets) and is the smallest for maximum thread engagement. For most applications it is safe to move up one drill size for rather less engagement.
