1 Oct. 2, 1930 The state field meeting of the department of women s work of the New Hampshire Congregational Conference was held last Wednesday at Portsmouth and was attended by Mrs. Alfred Durgin, Mrs. Arthur Thompson, Mrs. Clarence Laughton, Mrs. Jennie Tyler and Mrs. Ernest Menter of this town. Ina Anderson of Portland, Me., was a Sunday caller on Ernest Menter and family. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Thompson and Mr. and Mrs. Elliot Wellington and daughter Gene, of Dorchester, Mass., were week-end guests of Mr. and Mrs. Grandville Thompson and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Thompson. Mrs. William Kennard of Dover called on Mrs. Ernest Menter Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Justin Morrison and family of Epping called on Mrs. Morrison s sister, Mrs. Sydney Davis, last Sunday. Virginia Menter is selling Christmas Cards for the benefit of Jeremiah Smith Grange. Albert Corson is doing some repairing in the barn owned by Grace Thurston, this week. Elmer Kenniston has returned to Lee and is staying with his brother Herman. Harry Munroe attended the Odd Fellows parade held at Old Orchard Beach last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Johnson and 10 children of Sacco, Me., called on Mr. and Mrs. Grandville Thompson Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur J. Thompson and two daughters, Lucille and Marcia with Mr. and Mrs. Arthur McDaniel of Barrington, motored last Sunday over 225 miles and attended Lempster Fair, coming home through Keene. Nellie Thompson is taking care of her sister, Mrs. Bessie Cartland, of Dover and Charles Cartland has also returned to Dover for the winter, after spending the summer at the Cartland homestead here. There were 17 relatives present at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Durgin Sunday. The guests came from Dover, and Malden and Haverhill, Mass. Evangeline Durgin returned to Boston with the Malden party, where she is attending Miss Sacker s School of Designing and Interior Decorating. Rev. Kenney, a former pastor in the Lee Congregational Church, who has the misfortune some time ago to be stricken with infantile paralysis and left somewhat disabled, fell a while ago and broke his leg, when the brace he was wearing became unlocked. He is at present at the Hanover Hospital, where his condition is improving. The Union Missionary meeting of Lee, Barrington and Madbury, was held at the Lee Congregational Church last Tuesday afternoon at The meeting was opened by a prayer and reading by the president, Mrs. Clarence Laughton, who presided. After the secretary s report and other business was disposed of, Mrs. Charline M. Abbott of Rochester, president W.C.T.U., gave a talk on prohibition. Lunch was served by the Lee ladies. There were about 60 members in attendance.

2 October 9, 1930 Mr. and Mrs. Harold Jennison of Greenland and their eight boys were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Thompson Sunday. Anna Raymond, Aage and Ejner Andreasin of Portland, Me., were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Menter and family. There was a 4-H leaders meeting at the north side Friday. Marcia Thompson has again enrolled as a piano pupil of Ethel G. Ricker in Newmarket. Eugene Sawyer is painting the house of Archie Barker in Durham. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur J. Thompson and family were visitors in Dover Saturday. Mrs. Chester Ellison and daughter called on Mrs. George Hoitt in Durham Thursday afternoon. Charlie Cartland of Dover visited the Cartland homestead Sunday. Arthur J. Thompson made a business trip to Portsmouth Monday. Kathrine Jones is working at Jack Grant s store in Durham. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Menter and family, Herman Kenniston, Anna Raymond, Aage and Ejner Andreasin, motored to Silver Lake in Madison, Sunday. Alphonso Jones celebrated his 82nd birthday Monday, October 6. Mrs. Flagg Mitchel left Monday for Maine because of the death of her daughter. Mrs. Addie Ellison and daughter, who have been visiting William Mitchell, returned to Boston and Chicago Monday morning. Mrs. Robert Thompson and her sister, Beth Jennison, are packing apples at Dow s nursery. Mr. and Mrs. Harley Smith who resided on the George Chesley Farm are now living in their new home in Barrington. George Menter of Nashua, father of Ernest Menter, has come to make his home with Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Menter.

3 October 16, 1930 Mrs. Frank Morrison of Dover and Mrs. Harry Roberts of Dover called on Mrs. Chester Ellison last Wednesday afternoon. Calixte Baillargeon who went to the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth last week, is getting along quite well at the present. A water system is being installed at the home of William Jennison on the Buzzell Farm. Barbara James and friend of Boston were at the home of her mother, Mrs. Hattie James over the week-end and holiday, Ruth Ellison of Dover and Dexter Caldwell, George Ellison, Clare Ellison, and Donald Davis, of Lee, motored to Hudson to visit the wild animal farm Sunday afternoon. Walter A. Corson of Manchester and his mother and sister of Dover took his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Corson, of Lee, to Boston Sunday to see the American Legion Parade. They rode a distance of 215 miles before returning to their homes. Mrs. Eugene Sawyer, who has been very ill is improving at this writing. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hatch and two sons, George and Chesley, of Dover, were Sunday callers at the home of Alfred Durgin. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Lovett of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Miss Hand of Washington, D.C., Mr. C. W. Jones of Melrose, Mass., and Miss Rollins of Exeter and Chauffeur took lunch Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Chester Ellison. Mr. and Mrs. Dame and family, who have been living on the Jim Lee Place, moved back to Dover last week. Mr. and Mrs. George Hill of Ward Hill, Mass., and Mr. and Mrs. Perley Leathers of Haverhill, Mass., called last Sunday on Mr. and Mrs. Sydney Davis. Mr. Charles Ellison, who has been making his home with Albert Corson is spending a few days with Charles E. Langley. Charles Johnson spent Tuesday in Haverhill, Mass, Beth Jennison entertained seven Boston friends over the week-end.

4 Byrol Rowel of Boston was a visitor at the home of Mrs. Jennie Tyler over the holiday. Lee Cartland Tyler is working for his uncle, Chas. Cartland, of Dover. Chas. Cartland of Dover was at the Cartland homestead Sunday. Mrs. Jennie Tyler visited Mr. and Mrs. Austin L. Calef in Barrington over the week-end. She attended the Grange Fair held in the Grange Hall there Saturday night. Mrs. Isaacson, teacher of the North School attended the district Teachers Institute held at Milton Monday. The state convention will be held in Concord this Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Piper and son of Connecticut were week-end guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Menter. Annie Raymond and friend of Portland, Me., were also guests of the Menters. There was a large attendance of Lee people at the Harvest Supper at Nottingham Saturday night. Alice Dudley of Worcester, Mass., was home over the weekend.

5 October 23, 1930 Mr. and Mrs. James B. Walker left last Monday for a trip thru New York State taking the Niagara Falls route to Toronto, Canada around Lake Ontario, coming back through the Adirondack Mountains and again through New York state, crossing Vermont to White River Junction, arriving home Saturday night. They covered the trip in their car, a distance of 1,400 miles. Calixte Baillargeon has returned to the Portsmouth Naval Hospital for further treatment. He expects to remain there for several weeks. Leon Dudley and friend of Boston were home over the week-end. Mr. and Mrs. Lindh and daughter and Mrs. Lindh s mother, Mrs. Jane Lynn of Brookline, Mass., called on Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Fernald on Sunday. Belle Tuttle of Swampscott, Mass., and friends of Newbury, were at the Tuttle Farm over the week-end. Mrs. Alice M. Sawyer, who has been staying at her home here and also in Durham for the summer, started back for California last Saturday by the way of New Orleans. Mrs. Eugene Sawyer is greatly improved since her illness and is now able to do most of her work. There will be at the Jeremiah Smith Grange Hall on Friday evening of October 31, 1930, a harvest supper from 6 to 8 o clock followed by a program and sale of fruits and vegetables. Mrs. John Phipps and sons, Donald, Ralph and Mr. and Mrs. Clare Phipps and son Jack of Dover, were all Sunday callers on Mr. and Mrs. Chester Ellison. William Currier took his sister Gertrude back to her home in Farmington last Sunday. There was a special Grange meeting held Tuesday evening at Grange Hall for the purpose of rehearsing the first degree. Inspection of officers is to be held Tuesday evening, October 28. Mrs. Sydney Davis and daughter Dorothy were visited in Portsmouth last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Dorloff and daughter of Melrose, Mass., were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Thompson Sunday. In the afternoon they went to Derry and Manchester with their hosts. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Kranshaw and son of Sacco, Me., and Mr. and Mrs. Crowell of Haverhill, Mass., were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Laughton on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Laughton and Mr. and Mrs. Crowell motored to Woodford and Portland, Me., on Saturday. Mrs. Phoebe Lagallee of Hudson visited her mother, Mrs. Jennie Tyler over the week end. Next Tuesday, Oct. 28, there will be a meeting at Mrs. Benton Lane s for the purpose of the Lee ladies to learn how to make different kinds of baskets and mats.

The hall was prettily decorated with orange crepe paper and pumpkins. A pleasing program was presented by the following: Duet, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Dow; one act play, Madeline Caldwell and Mildred McDaniels; recitation, Emily Archer; Song, three girls of North Lee School; recitation, Mrs. Edith Prescott of Dover; one act play, Nolan James and Norman Whitehouse; song, three girls of Lee Center School; singing, George Phalen, who was dressed as a small negro boy with a banjo; song, three girls of South Lee School; singing, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Dow. The program was followed by a sale of fruits and vegetables. A goodly sum was realized from the affair. A large gathering attended the Mardi Gras Dance held at the Town Hall Friday night. The hall was adorned with a Halloween effect and the prizes for the best costumes were won by Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo Whitehouse of Dover. Dorothy Kimball, formerly of this cont..

7 November 6, 1930 cont. Town, with friends spent the past few days as guests of Grace Adams. Mrs. Robert Thompson and sister, Beth Jennison, motored to Boston Monday, returning home at seven p.m. Mrs. Kilmer of Grafton, Mass., and Mary Sanborn of Durham, were Sunday callers on many of Mrs. Kilmer s friends here. She was the former Miss Dodge, the Y.W.C.A. worker in this town, and is staying with Miss Sanborn in Durham for the week. Enez Andreasin of Portland, Me., who has been the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Menter and family for the past week, returned home Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Thompson returned to their home in Boston last Sunday after a week s visit with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Granville Thompson. Charles Smith and family visited at the Thompson home last week. William Carpenter has purchased a Chevrolet car. Albert Corson is building a carriage house for Grace Thurston. Mr. and Mrs. Allison Strayton, two friends of Newburyport and Belle Tuttle, were week-end visitors at the Tuttle homestead. Miss Tuttle stayed as the guest of Mrs. Demerit of Newmarket for over election and returned to Swampscott on Wednesday. The Lee Ladies Missionary Society has been invited to attend the State Missionary Team, held at Dover this Friday afternoon at 4 o clock. Charles Haywood of Neponset, Mass., was in town Tuesday visiting his mother and grandparents. Mrs. Emily Edgerly of Epping called Sunday on Mr. and Mrs. H.W. Millikens. James Wiggin will live with his son Frank in Dover for the winter. Mrs. Izetta Langmaid has gone to Dover for the winter to live with her daughter, Mrs. Ella McKay. Mr. and Mrs. Mason of Madbury are working for Mr. and Mrs. H.M. Rugg. Caverly Durgin was home over election.
