4 READ Read the following passage. Then circle the correct answer. Mary Cassatt Mary Cassatt ( ) was one of the greatest American painters. She first studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and then went on to Europe to study the famous artists of the past. Mary Cassatt spent a lot of time in Paris, where she showed her paintings at the Paris Salon. There she met the famous painter Edgar Degas. He invited her to show her paintings with his Impressionist group. The Impressionists used short brush strokes of pure colors to represent the effect of light on objects. By the 1880s Cassatt had her own individual style. She used clearly defined shapes and colors. She became interested in Japanese style prints in 1890 and began to use flat surfaces with designs in her paintings. She often painted scenes from her own personal life in France, such as picnics with friends and mothers playing with or caring for their children. Her most original paintings, The Bath and The Boating Party, were done in the Japanese style. Mary Cassatt finally had her first one-woman show in She also helped to make popular the paintings of her artist friends and encouraged them to collect other great works of art. 8 COMPOSITION A. Victor is keeping a journal of his visit to the United States. Read the entry for August 13th below. August 13 People in the United States have a lot of different customs. For example, their eating habits are very different from ours. They usually take only a half an hour or an hour for lunch, and they almost never go home at lunchtime. Americans eat their big meal in the evening. They usually have dinner around six or seven o clock, but they sometimes eat as early as 5:30 p.m. People in the United States have different ways of greeting people. For example, they always shake hands when they meet a person for the first time, but they seldom shake hands with good friends or people at work.
