1 July 10, 1930 Evangeline Durgin came home last Tuesday evening after a short visit at the home of her aunt, Mrs. Frank Hatch in Dover. Virginia Menter spent the Fourth with Mr. and Mrs. William Kennard of Dover. Mrs. John Davis and daughter Priscilla and Mrs. Baldwin of Boston, also Mr. and Mrs. Frank Davis of Portsmouth were callers on Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Davis over the holidays. Mr. and Mrs. Kimball, Mr. and Mrs. Milton Thayer spent the Fourth at the Wellington Homestead. Mrs. Helen Gray came Thursday night and stayed until Sunday while Mr. and Mrs. Eliot Wellington came Saturday night and will stay for a week. Barbara James was operated on for adenoids and tonsils at the Exeter Hospital last week Tuesday and came home Friday. Mr. and Mrs. George Menter and daughter Beatrice of Nashua, spent the Fourth at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Menter. Bertha Tootil of Providence, R.I., has been visiting for a few days with Mr. and Mrs. William Carpenter. Vivian Bloom, who was hurt in an automobile accident, at South Braintree, Mass., where she had been working, is now at her home there. Mrs. William Howard and son Junior called on Mr. and Mrs. Ernest W. Menter last Friday. Mrs. Jennie Tyler was the guest of her daughter in Hudson over the holiday. The barn of Wesley Harvey was burned to the ground last Tuesday night during the thunder storm, when it was struck by lightning. Marion Mariotti was taken to the Exeter hospital last Tuesday where she was operated on for appendicitis. She is now getting along nicely. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Menter motored to Nashua Sunday afternoon. Mrs. William Graves and Lena James of Brentwood called on Mrs. Chester Ellison last Wednesday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. John Gibline of Somerville, Mass., spent the week-end with Mr. Jennison. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Thompson returned to their home in Dorchester, Mass., Sunday afternoon after visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Grandville Thompson for the past three weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Dolloff of Melrose, Mass., called on Mr. and Mrs. Robert Thompson last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Brown and four children of Little Falls, N.Y., are spending a few days with Mrs. Brown s brothers, Raymond and Harry Munroe. Inez Carlson is the guest of her aunt, Mrs. Robert Thompson, for a few days. Dwight Walker was a holiday guest of his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. James Walker. Fred Commings spent the Fourth with his niece, Mrs. William Phair in Durham. Carrie Commings of Berkley, Cal., and Mrs. James Walker, enjoyed a motor trip through parts of Maine on Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Davis and friends of Lynn, Mass., spent last Wednesday at the Old Willow Homestead. Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Walker of Lewiston, Me., and Mr. John Walker were callers on Mr. and Mrs. James Walker last week. The Lee Congregational Church will observe Grange Sunday and all Grangers are invited to attend. Mrs. Homer James of Somerville, Mass., is the guest of Mrs. Hattie James. Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Widgren and son of Haverhill, Mass., were week-end visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Fernald.

2 July 17, 1930 The Lee Ladies Missionary Society held a picnic for the children last Thursday afternoon on the church grounds. Games were enjoyed by all the children who were in charge of Evangeline Durgin. Ice cream, cake and lemonade were served to all, there being about 50 present. Harry M. Rugg is at the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth for treatment. Mrs. Belle Garrity, Mrs. Katherine Jones, Esther Garrity, and Gladys Jones, motored to Rye and Hampton Beaches last Friday where they visited Camp Tobey. Mr. and Mrs. Algot Carlson of Winthrop, Mass., called on Mrs. Carlson s sister, Beth Jennison, last Sunday. Mrs. Ethel Tibbetts has a new Chevrolet sedan. Pauline Johnson has returned from the Exeter Hospital and is rapidly improving. Violet Johnson and father and Mr. Henry of Rockland, Mass., called on Mr. and Mrs. Chester Ellison and daughter last Friday for the day. George Roma is having wonderful luck this year with his crop of peas. They have grown to a height of seven feet and each pod has an average seven to eleven peas in it. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Morrison of Raymond and Mr. and Mrs. Justin Morrison of Epping called on Mr. and Mrs. Sydney Davis last Sunday, Mrs. Jennie Tyler has returned home after visiting her daughter in Hudson. Inez Carlson of Winthrop, Mass., and Ruth Buzzey of Dorchester, Mass., returned to their homes after spending two weeks with Mrs. Robert and Mrs. Grandville Thompson. Mrs. Nellie Thompson is visiting her sister, Mrs. Jennie Tyler. Leon Dudley with two friends from Reading, Mass., was home over the week-end. Mr. and Mrs. Phipps were callers at the Cartland Farm last Monday afternoon. Gene Wellington is staying with Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Munroe for a week or two while her mother is at the Hayes Hospital in Dover. Her father returned to their home at Dorchester, Mass., last Sunday. There was a large attendance of Grangers at the church services on Sunday which was observed as Grange Sunday. Carl Sanders has had lightning rods put on his buildings. Mr. and Mrs. Minot Bartlett of Worchester, Mass., were callers on Mr. and Mrs. Carl Sanders and family last Saturday. Marion Mariotta has returned home from the Exeter Hospital. Mrs. Carrie Mason and two children were callers on Mrs. James Walker of Dover last Sunday. Norman demerit was taken to the Hayes Hospital last week for appendicitis. Fred and Raymond, sons of Fred Thompson of Roxbury, Mass., are staying with Mr. and Mrs. Sanders for the summer. Mr. and Mrs. Roland W. Thompson and family and Clifford H. Thompson of Methuen, Mass., were callers on friends here last Saturday.

3 July 24, 1930 Mrs. Jennie Tyler spent a few days in Barrington with friends last week. Mr. and Mrs. Alex McRae have exchanged their car for a Pontiac. Lee Cartland Tyler is at the home of his mother for a few days. A family party was held on the lawn of Arthur J. Thompson last Sunday afternoon at which there were 18 present. Belle Tuttle and Mr. and Mrs. Knowles of Swampscott, Mass., were visitors in town last week. Lucille and Marcia Thompson have been visiting their aunt, Mrs. Arthur McDaniels in Barrington. A Sunday School Picnic will be held at North River Pond on August 5 for all day. Mrs. Bertha Geissler from the west is staying with her sister, Mrs. William Lee. On Sunday afternoon Mrs. R. Tennon Caverly and daughter Flora, and Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Lampec and daughter Margaret called on Mr. and Mrs. Arthur J. Thompson. They are from Winchester, Mass. Mrs. Roy Hill and daughter Ruth of Laurel, Md., and Mrs. Thomas Baldwin and daughter Dorothy of Washington, D.C. are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Durgin for a few days. Mrs. Gertrude Haywood was in Boston on business last Thursday. Her son Charles returned with her and is staying here for a few days. Mr. and Mrs. John Geblin of Somerville, Mass., are spending their vacation at William Jennison s. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Bierwelder and Clara Woltram spent the week-end at William Jennison s. Norma Rowell is spending part of her summer vacation with her father in Boston. Clara Peterson, Russel Gustasson and Roy Wilder all of Worcester, Mass., spent the week-end with Alice Dudley and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Sanders. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Sanders and family spent Sunday at Wallis Sands. Eliot Wellington removed his wife, who has been a patient at the Hayes Hospital in Dover for the past two weeks, to their home in Dorchester, Mass., last Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. George Munroe and family are spending a week s vacation with his brother, Harry Munroe. Mr. and Mrs. Kurkishkist of Belmont, Mass., spent the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. William Taylor.

4 July 31, 1930 Mrs. Addie Mitchell of Boston and daughter Ethel of Chicago are visiting with Mr. and Mrs. William Mitchell. Mrs. Helen Gerrish of Northwood is visiting with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Benton Layne, for a few days. Mrs. Frank Williams of Rhode Island called on Mr. and Mrs. Sydney Davis last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. George Mildren of Burlington, Vt., were the guests of Mrs. Mildren s sister, Mrs. Charles Johnson, over the week-end. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Porter, and two children from Haverhill, Mass., Mrs. Derosier, and her friend Mrs. May Roop, and daughter and friend, of Lynn have been visiting Mrs. Clarence Fernald. Mrs. Ruth Rimes of Barrington has been the guest of Clara Ellison for the past week. Harold York of Seattle, Wash., formerly of Lee, passed away at his home there Saturday, following a heart attack, his widow was formerly Anna M. Plumber of this town. Leon Dudley was home over the week-end. Mrs. Bertha Gerrish and Mrs. Frank Morrison were visitors in town last Sunday. Mrs. Algot Carlson of Winthrop, Mass., was the weekend guest of her sister, Mrs. Robert Thompson. Charles Johnson and Chester Ellison are cutting the hay on the Charles Caverno farm. Mrs. Frank Willey and two daughters and son, are spending two weeks vacation at Mrs. Lawlor s place, formerly the Bradford Caswell Farm. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Davis and family of Lynn, Mass., spent a few days last week at the Willow homestead. Mrs. Sydney Davis has been employed by Mr. Potter of Durham to work at the Horticulture Farm. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Johnson picked 52 quarts of blueberries in a neighboring town in less than three hours last week. Harry Rugg is still in the Naval Hospital at Portsmouth and will have to remain there for some time to come. Mr. and Mrs. Ellsworth Garrity entertained Mrs. Garrity s aunt, Lillian Graves of Providence, R.I., for the past week. Alex MacRae is having his buildings painted. Little Shirley Thompson of Methuen, Mass., is visiting her cousins, Lucille and [M] Thompson for two weeks. The Sunday School picnic will be held at North River Pond on Tuesday, August 5 for all [..]is invited to attend. Also on August 6 at 8 p.m. there will be a Town party on the lawn of the Lee Church. Ice cream, cake, candy and mystery packages will be on sale. Bertha Tootill has been visited Fred C. York.

5 August 7, 1930 Miss Nora Whitehouse passed away at the home of her nephew at Alton last Saturday. She was the former housekeeper of Alphonso Jones and had been a resident of this town for over 25 years. The funeral service was held at the Advent Church in Farmington on Monday at 1 o clock, to which some of their very close friends from here attended. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ellison of Fitchburg, Mass., called on their brother Chester Ellison last Sunday. Charles and Inez Carlton who have been staying with their aunt Mrs. Robert Thompson, for the past few weeks, returned to their home in Winthrope, Mass., last Monday. Lawrence Bloom is at home from his position in Bingham, Me., where he has been working on a contract job. Edna Bloom has gone to Braintree, Mass., where she has a position, Mr. and Mrs. Perley Meserve of Lynn, Mass., were callers on Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Munroe on last Sunday. Mrs. Helen Gray and family, Mrs. Eliot Wellington and daughter Jean, Mrs. Grace Phayer, Mrs. Frank Kimball and Mr. Walter Wellington, are all staying for a two weeks vacation at the Wellington Homestead. Mr. Eliot Wellington and Mr. Phayer were there for over the week-end. Mr. William Taylor and son Billie, were week-end visitors of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Taylor. Bertha Tootill is visiting Mrs. James Walker. A large delegation from lee went to the Sunday School Picnic at North River Pond in Northwood last Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. John Gebbin have been visiting Beth Jennison and Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Bierwilder are staying with Miss Jennison for the month of August. August 21, 1930 Mrs. Charles Johnson and two sons, Homer and Dana with Grace Adams motored to Amesbury, Mass., and Hampton Beach last Sunday. The following names were drawn by Fred Cummings for the September term of the Superior Court, to be held at Dover: Wilber Burley, Grand Jury and W. D. Smith, Petit Jury. Homer James of Somerville, Mass., spent Sunday with his mother, Mrs. Hattie James. There will be no more church or Sunday school until the first Sunday in September. The Misses Lucille and Marcia Thompson have returned home from their week s visit with their cousins in Methuen, Mass. Mr. Daniel Fernald is spending his vacation with his brother Clarence. Harry M. Rugg is home for a few days from the hospital but must return to the hospital later. Mrs. Hattie James has gone to Boston for a visit. Barbara has returned home while her mother is in Boston. Cora Carson is spending a few days with Mr. and Mrs. Harry Munroe. Many people from this town attended the auction held at the Barber place last week. William Plummer was the auctioneer. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Thompson motored to Salem and Methuen last Saturday, Mrs. Jennie Hopper returned to her home in Dover last Monday after her week s visit with Mrs. Grandville Thompson. A birthday party was given to Gilman Menter and Raymond Kennard on their 13th birthday, last Tuesday evening at the Grange Hall. Thirty children were present, and games were enjoyed by all. Ice cream, cake and fancy cookies were served. Marion Walker and girl a friend from Franklin, motored through Canada and New York last week. Dorothy Davis is spending a few days in Portsmouth. Dorothy Menter returned to her home in Londonderry last Monday after spending her vacation with her cousin, Ernest Menter.

6 August 28, 1930 Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Munroe and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Thompson motored to the Benson wild animal farm in Hudson Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. James Bean and Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Bean of Haverhill, Mass., called on Mr. and Mrs. Chester Ellison and family Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Belle Garrity and family motored to Portsmouth to see her daughter, Mrs. Cora Canney, who is ill at the Portsmouth Hospital. Herbert Currier who has been so long at the Exeter Hospital has returned to his home here and is quite well at present although he still goes on crutches. Mr. and Mrs. Ellsworth Garrity entertained friends from the West and New York last week. Isabelle Smart of Durham was a caller on Mrs. Kathrine Jones last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Munroe and Mrs. Robert Thompson motored to Pittsfield and Barnstead last Monday. Mrs. James Walker and Mrs. Grandville Thompson motored to Manchester last Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Granville Thompson and Mrs. Robert Thompson went to Dover on business last Tuesday. Chesley Durgin went to Lynn, Mass. last Tuesday to make a short visit with Dana Wiggin. Mr. Harry M. Rugg is at the present very ill at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital. Mrs. Ed Hancock and Mrs. Helen MacRae called on Mrs. Mason last week and also visited friends in Newmarket. Among the recent callers on Mr. and Mrs. William Carpenter were Mrs. Howley of Boston, who is spending a few days there, Mr. Jerome Crawley, also of Boston, is spending his vacation there and Mr. and Mrs. Tom Maxin and daughter Priscilla of Portland, Me., spent Sunday there. Mrs. Arthur Kingsbury and daughter Theodora of New York, were callers on Mr. and Mrs. Will Mason Thursday and Friday of last week.

7 September 4, 1930 The Happy Workers 4-H Club of Lee with their leader, Mrs. Burns Bartlett, held a picnic at the Grandville Thompson swimming Pool last Thursday afternoon. There were 22 present. After the bathing, roasted frankfurts, marshmallows and tonic were served. Among those at the Wellington homestead for the holidays were Mr. and Mrs. Eliot Wellington and daughter Gene, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kimball, Mrs. Helen Gray and family spent the holidays at the home of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Taylor. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Legallee and Mr. and Mrs. Howard Legallee and children of Hudson spent the holidays at Mrs. Jennie Tyler s. Mrs. Phebe Legallee and daughter are staying with Mrs. Legallee s mother, Mrs. Tyler, for a few days. Mr. and Mrs. George Munroe and family and Mr. and Mrs. Meservie were visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Harry and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Munroe. Mrs. Nellie Thompson and Mrs. Jennie Tyler and son Lee, also Norman Rowell, motored to Adams Point where they called on Fannie Adams. Mrs. Annie Raymond is visiting her sister, Mrs. Ernest Menter. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Munroe have sold their farm to Mr. Baillargeon, formerly of Canada. Mr. and Mrs. Munroe are planning to live with Mr. Harry Munroe for the coming winter. Marrietta Breaky, a former teacher at the Center School and friend from Lowell, Mass., were callers on Mr. and Mrs. Grandville Thompson last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Thompson of Dorchester, Mass., were at the home of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Grandville Thompson over the week-end. Donald returned to Boston Monday but his wife is staying here for a few more days. Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Caverno and family of West Somerville, Mass., were at the old Horace Caverno Farm over the holiday. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur J. Thompson and two daughters moved to Barrington last Sunday. Married at the Baptist Church, Newmarket, last Saturday by Rev. Herman J. Morrison were Norman Cilley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jake Cilley and Miss Stella Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Smith of Hampton Falls. The double ring service was performed. The bride was attired in blue georgette. After their honeymoon they will reside in Newmarket. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Peach of New York are visiting their father Mr. Henry Peach for a few days. Donald Leanard and family of Burlington, Mass., were also visiting at his mother s Mrs. Henry Peach. The Ellison Families held their annual family reunion and picnic at Palfrey s Point near Portsmouth last Sunday. There were 39 present as there were several families who were not in attendance. A bountiful dinner and supper were served and swimming was enjoyed by nearly everyone. Mrs. Belle Garrity and family motored to Northwood on last Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. Dame and two children of Durham have moved into the old Jim Lee House now owned by Charles H. Johnson. Pauline Johnson went to York and Wells Beaches on Monday of last week. Mr. Gilchrist of Derry and Mrs. Parguet and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Plumer of Haverhill, Mass., were callers on Mr. and Mrs. James B. Walker Sunday. Walker was at home over the week-end with her parents. A week ago last Friday night the lightning struck the home of Frank Caldwell and also the home of his mother, Mrs. Martha Caldwell, but did very little damage. Josphine Durgin has returned to her home in Andover, Mass. She spent her vacation with relatives in Lee and Barrington. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Steele of Hudson called on Mrs. Tyler last Sunday. Lee Cartland Tyler is employed at the Cartland farm. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ellison of Fitchburg, Mass., called on his brother, Chester Ellison, last week. Miss Belle Tuttle of Swampscott, and friend of Newbury, Mass., were callers at the Tuttle homestead over the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Charley Davis of Portsmouth were Sunday callers at the home of Sydney Davis. Mrs. James Johnson of Nottingham is staying with her son, Charles, for the present, while her daughter, Mrs. Alice Case, with whom she has been staying is working in Haverhill, Mass. Many of the Lee ladies attended the missionary meeting held last Thursday at the home of Mrs. Clarence Laughton of Nottingham, which included sewing in the forenoon and a program in the afternoon. There were 16 present. William Plummer who has pneumonia, is greatly improved and it now able to sit up in bed. Mrs. Mabel Haines was home over the week-end. Parkman Haley is having water put into his house. Mrs. Robert Thompson motored to Greenland Sunday to visit her brother and family there. Roger Smith of Winthrope, Mass., and Howard Adams of Northwood, called on Mrs. Grandeville Thompson last Sunday Afternoon. Mr. Charles Smith of Winthrope, Mass., nephew of Mrs. Grandville Thompson, who has been the guest of his aunt for the past week, returned to his home Sunday. The George Chesley Farm has been sold to Boston parties, who are making extensive repairs. Charles Haywood of Boston came home Monday to visit his mother, Mrs. Gertrude Haywood. Charles Davis of Lynn, Mass., and friend came home last Sunday and are staying at their home, the old Willow homestead. There is a very large crowd of dancers at the barn dance held in the Town Hall Saturday. Arthur Wiggin has completed the over-night camp he has been building and it is now ready for renting. George Shelburne was a caller on Clarence Fernald and wife over the week-end. Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Widgren were week-end guests of Mrs. Clarence Fernald. Last Wednesday, Mrs. Chester Ellison and daughter, Clare, with Donald Davis, took a 500-mile trip through Maine, visiting the State House and Museum at Augusta and the Soldier s Home in Togus. They were guests of Mrs. Ellison s brother, Herbert Thompson, and also her niece, Mrs. Chester Foster, both of Richmond, Me. They returned home Friday noon. Ellsworth Garrity, and mother, sister Esther and Gladys Jones, motored to Hudson last Sunday to visit the wild animal farm. Mrs. Ellsworth Garrity and infant son, Allen Kimball Garrity, returned home from Exeter Hospital Sunday. Robert Thompson is having an artesian well dug at his home.
