1 September 7, 1917 Miss Nettie Hanscom of Dover and Master Robert Googin of Kittery, Me., were guests over Labor Day of Mr. and Mrs. Granville B. Thompson. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Cram returned to their home in Greenwood, Mass., Monday, after spending a few weeks with Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Cram. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hardy and Clarence Pray of Ayer, Mas., and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hardy of Swampscott, Mass., visited with Simeon C. Hardy over the week-end. Schools in town commenced the fall term Tuesday, with Miss Laura Henderson of Lowell, Mass., teaching the North Side, Miss Marietta Breakey of Lowell at the Centre and Miss Hart of Gonic at the South Side. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. Davis and daughter, Miss Millet, started for their home in Duluth, Minn., on Wednesday, going by auto as far as Buffalo, N.Y. Mr. and Mrs. George E. Chesley and daughter, Miss Mary and Mr. and Mrs. Alfred C. Durgin and children spent the week-end at York Beach. Mrs. Mary Bean of Boston was the guest of J. True Bartlett a few days last week. Mrs. Frank H. Dearborn and daughter, Miss Hazel, went to Wolfeboro for Labor Day and from there will go on an auto trip to the White Mountains. Miss Irene Carpenter of Newmarket is spending this week with Mr. and Mrs. Woodruff Mason. Mr. and Mrs. Nestor Davis and Theodore Skillins, of Boston, and Mrs. Mildred Alexander of Hyde Park were recent visitors at Harry Smith s. Mrs. Whelox of Providence is visiting Mrs. Smith this week. Louis Colter returned to his home in Boston last week, after spending the summer with Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Foster. Herbert Wiggin of Roxbury, Mass., is spending this week with his daughter, Mrs. Arthur E. Thompson. The employees of the fibre mill enjoyed an outing on Labor Day at Great Bay. Edward Hancock of Cambridge has purchased Suzanne Cottage of Ora Howard of New York City. Mr. Hancock will occupy the same as a summer residence. Alfred Durgin had business in Concord, Wednesday.

2 September 14, 1917 Miss Bernice Lawrence visited in Newmarket the first of the week, the guest of Miss Irene Carpenter. Miss Mary A. Chesley commenced her duties as teacher for the second year last Monday at the Brewster Free Academy at Wolfeboro. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Farrell and Mr. and Mrs. Hyde of Swampscott, Mass., were recent visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene C. Foster. Mrs. Haines of Durham called on Mrs. Frank H. Dearborn the first of the week. Woodruff Mason spent the day in Boston, Friday of last week. Elmer Chesley of Malden, Mass., spent the week end with relatives in town. Walter Plumer was in Dover last week attending to his duties as grand juror at the Superior court. J. True Bartlett is petit juror for this term of court. There was a baptismal service at the chapel Sunday, for the infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur J. Thompson, after which the regular services were held. The blind preacher, Rev. Mr. Roundtree of Georgia, who has spent his vacation in town, preached a very fine sermon, which was enjoyed very much by the congregation. Charles Hardy and W.B. Pray of Ayer, Mass., and Harry Hardy of Swampscott, Mass., came Saturday to Simeon C. Hardy s. Mrs. Pray, who has been visiting her father, returned to Ayer with them Sunday. Woodbury Burleigh returned from Springfield, Mass., last Tuesday, where he went to attend the funeral of his grandchild, Madeleine Place, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Place, who died of pneumonia. Her age was 11 months. The 89th annual meeting of the Strafford Association of Congregational churches will be held at the Lee church, Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 18 and 19. At the meeting of Jeremiah Smith Grange, Tuesday evening, the ladies degree team conferred the fourth degree on a class of four. A harvest supper was served, and the Dover grange furnished the programme. About 120 were in attendance, visitors being present from Dover, Nottingham, Rollinsford, Somersworth, South Berwick, Union, Cocheco, Durham and Northwood.

3 September 21, 1917 Mrs. Gilman Y. Durgin spent two days last week in Winchester, Mass. Mr. and Mrs. Abel Haley of Wolfeboro were at Brookside Farm the first of the week, the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Frank H. Dearborn. Mrs. Joseph Hinds and two children and Miss Olive Otis of Canton, Mass., visited with Fred B. York a few days this week. Miss Ethel Thompson of Portland, Me., is visiting her grandmother, Mrs. Lucy Thompson, at Hilltop Farm. Ellery Jenkins of Lowell, Mass., spent the week end with his uncle, Sargent Jenkins. Mrs. John Randall and son, who have spent the most of the summer at Frank Randall s, left Tuesday to join her husband in North Carolina, where they will make their home this winter. Mr. and Mrs. Gorham H. Sawyer enjoyed an auto trip of a week through Vermont and Connecticut, recently. Mrs. Thomas Stevens and Mrs. Lena Stevens spent a few days this week in Middleton. Mr. and Mrs. G. Edward Chesley of Malden, Mass., passed the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Alfred C. Durgin. Mr. and Mrs. Roland Thompson, who visited Mrs. Lucy Thompson and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur E. Thompson last week, have returned to their home in Andover, Mass. Friday evening, Sept. 21, the ladies of the Congregational society will hold an entertainment at Grange hall. There is to be a very interesting programme, given by out-of-town talent. Any who miss it will make a great mistake. Cake and ice cream for sale.

4 September 21, 1917 cont. In remembrance of the 40th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. George E. Chesley, sixteen of their nearest relatives gave them a surprise. It was also the 10th anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred C. Durgin. Relatives were present from Dover, Haverhill, and Malden, Mass. Remembrances were left as souvenirs of the occasion. The 89th annual meeting of the Strafford County Association of Congregational churches was held at the Congregational church, Lee, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. The general theme was The Enrichment of Life Through Christ, The Individual, the Community and the World. A good number were in attendance. The ladies of the church furnished two dinners and a supper in the vestry. Those remaining over night were entertained in Lee homes. Miss Nellie Wiggin has accepted a position in New York, and left for that city Thursday morning. Mrs. Mary McDaniel of Swampscott, Mass., is the guest of Mrs. Granville B. Thompson. Albert Cordeau and George Dearie of Lowell, Mass., were the guest of Mrs. Marietta Breakey, Sunday. The Women s Missionary Society met with Mrs. Benton Layne, Thursday of last week. About 20 members were present. Four young ladies, dressed as natives of India, China, Japan and Armenia, gave an exercise, telling what the missionaries had done for their country. Refreshments were served and a social hour enjoyed. Mrs. Elizabeth Wiggin has closed Willow Homestead for the winter, and after visiting relatives in Lynn, will make her home in Greenfield, N.H.

5 September 28, 1917 Benton Layne and daughter, Miss Helen, took an auto trip to Lowell, Mass., Sunday. Albert Durell of Lynn, Mass., was the guest for the week-end of his sister, Mrs. Harry Smith. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Davis and children, who spent the summer with Charles Stackpole, returned to Boston last Saturday. Charles Sawyer, who has been employed for the summer in the American Brass Works at Ansonia, Conn., returned home Saturday. Mrs. Frank Dearborn and daughter, Miss Hazel, are visiting in Wolfeboro. The Woman s Missionary Society will meet with Mrs. Granville Thompson, Thursday, Oct. 4. Miss Laura Henderson and Miss Marietta Breakey spent Sunday at their homes in Lowell, Mass. Miss Mary F. Maguire, who taught the school at the Centre last year, but who is teaching now in Northwood, spent Saturday and Sunday with Mrs. James B. Walker. Rev. Mr. Roundtree, who has been the guest of Rev. Arthur Brotherston this summer, has returned to his studies at Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Me. The schools in town closed Thursday, to give the teachers and scholars an opportunity to attend Rochester Fair. The entertainment given ingrange Hall last Friday evening was a great success. The programme was fine. The reputation of Mrs. Hill of Somersworth as a pianist is so well established it is needless to say that her efforts were of the best. The singing by Miss Laura Henderson, teacher at the North Side, was very pleasing, and the favorite in Lee, Mrs. Edward B. Griffiths of Durham, as usual, kept the close attention of the audience. Too much cannot be said of the kindness of Mrs. Tarbox of Marlboro, N.H., who, although a visitor, gave the audience a very fine reading. 6 October 5, 1917 Albert Caverno has recurred a position in the Portsmouth Navy Yard, and moved his family to Kittery, Me., this week. Mrs. Emma Hale went to Ayer, Mass., Wednesday, to visit her sister, Mrs. William B. Pray, who is quite ill. Mr. and Mrs. Woodruff Mason and daughter, Katherine, went to Boston, Saturday. Mr. Mason returned home Monday, Mrs. Mason and daughter staying for the remainder of the week. Woodbury Burleigh spent Sunday in Stratham. Mrs. Alma Wheeler of Worcester, Mass., has been the guest of Mrs. Frank H. Dearborn for the past two weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Gorham Sawyer entertained, Sunday, Mrs. Sawyer s mother, Mrs. Little, and brother, Edwin Little, and friends from Salisbury, N.H., they making the trip by auto and returning home the same day. Mrs. James Hayes of Dover spent the day last Friday with her sister, Mrs. J. Fred Bessom. Mrs. Charles Fernald, who has been visiting in Farmington, has returned home. George W. Wentworth of Merrimac, Mass., is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. George E. Chesley. Mr. and Mrs. Theodore F. Cram went to Greenwood, Mass., Saturday. Monday, Mr. Cram entered the Homeopathic Hospital to undergo an operation for hernia. Charles Sawyer has entered Yale College. Simeon C. Hardy returned Monday from a few days visit in Ayer, Mass. Mrs. Julia Saunders and Mrs. Willis Allen of Machias, Me., came Wednesday for a two weeks visit with their sister, Mrs. Eugene C. Foster. There will be no services at the chapel through the month of October, as Rev. Arthur Brotherston is taking his annual vacation.

7 October 12, 1917 Miss Iber Smith of Onset, Mass., came Wednesday to visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter D. Smith. Mrs. William L. Priest spent the day Sunday with friends in North Andover, Mass. Mrs. Gilman Y. Durgin spent the day in Boston, Thursday of last week. Mrs. Woodruff Mason and daughter, Katherine, have returned from a week s visit in Boston. Miss Katherine Garrity was the guest of her mother, Mrs. Belle Garrity, Sunday. Alfred Hale is employed at the new ship yard at Newington. Mrs. Annie McClellan returned to her home in Portland, Me., Wednesday, after spending a week with Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Foster. The Woman s Missionary Society met Thursday of last week with Mrs. Granville B. Thompson. Although the afternoon was stormy, there were quite a number present. The usual programme was given, a social time enjoyed and refreshments served. The first of a series of food demonstrations on war substitutes will be given in the town hall, Friday, Oct. 19, at 2 p.m. This will be a demonstration on fats. The ladies of the town are requested and urged to come, to make these demonstrations a success. About 25 of the neighbors and friends of Alphonso Jones gave him a surprise party Saturday night, it being his 70th birthday. Although taken completely by surprise, Mr. Jones made a good host and his housekeeper, Miss Whitehouse, proved an ideal hostess. Readings were given during the evening, one of which was given by Mr. Jones. All who went report a very good time. Refreshments were served. The Frank Reynold Entertainers of Boston will be the attraction at the benefit for Jeremiah Smith Grange, to be given at Grange hall, Oct. 17.

8 October 12, 1917 cont. Mrs. Clara F. Pray, wife of William B. Pray, passed away, of valvular heart trouble, Thursday of last week, at her home in Ayer, Mass. The body was brought to Lee to the home of her father, Simeon C. Hardy, and funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, Rev. Vaughan Dabney of Durham officiating. Two selections, Abide with Me and Nearer My God To Thee, were sung by Mrs. J. Guy Smart and Mrs. C.S. Pettee of Durham. The floral tributes were many and beautiful, showing the affection and esteem in which Mrs. Pray was held. The bearers were her three brothers, Charles, Harry and George Hardy, and nephew, Herbert Hardy. Interment was in the family lot at Lee Hill cemetery. Mrs. Pray was born in Newmarket, July 25, 1876, but she lived in Lee a number of years before her marriage, and while here made a great many friends and was respected by all who knew her. She is survived by a husband, one son, one daughter, a father, three brothers, and one sister. Call it not sorrow, the gift of remembering The smiles and the glances of those gone before, Back to our hearts and our homes we recall them, See them and love them as in the gone by, Knowing, that God that no ill can befall them, Since love enfolded, they no more can die. Sherman D. Cass, 81 years and 6 months of age, died at his home in Lee, October 6, and the funeral services were held on Monday at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. William Ramsden of Newmarket, Harry B. Tasker of Dover, undertaker and director. Mr. Cass was born in Raymond. For many years he lived in Manchester, where he was in business, and 28 years ago he came to Lee. He made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Hill, who cared for a comforted home in his declining years. Mr. Cass was a member of the I.O.O.F. and the Free Masons at Manchester. On Tuesday morning the remains were taken to Manchester for interment.

9 October 19, 1917 Mrs. Harry Smith spent a few days in Newmarket last week. Mr. and Mrs. James B. Walker were in Boston a couple of days recently and spent one day at the Springfield fair. Mr. and Mrs. Howard, who have been at Wadley s Falls this summer, returned to their home in Somerville, Monday. Edwin Thompson of Cambridge, Mass., was a weekend guest of his mother, Mrs. Lucy Thompson, at Hilltop Farm. Herbert Wiggin and Roxbury is the guest of his daughter, Mrs. Arthur E. Thompson. Mrs. Charles P. Bessom of Lynn, Mass., visited last week with Mr. and Mrs. J. Fred Bessom. Miss Marietta Breakey and Miss Laura Henderson spent the week-end at their homes in Lowell, Mass. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Peach of Malden were recent visitors at Howard Glidden s. The ladies are asked to make a special effort to attend the food demonstration to be given in the town hall, Friday, Oct. 19, at 2 p.m. The amount of money subscribed here for the library fund for soldiers and sailors was $32.90, the amount required was $ Mr. and Mrs. Gorham H. Sawyer took an auto trip to Strafford last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur J. Thompson went to Milton, Saturday night, with Mr. and Mrs. Arthur McDaniel. Miss Mary A. Chesley of Wolfeboro was the guest of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George E. Chesley, a few days the past week. Grant Farwell of Boston is enjoying a thirty days leave of absence from the police force, which he is spending with his mother, Mrs. Frank H. Dearborn. Mrs. Lyford Wiggin had the misfortune to fall one day last week, fracturing her hip. She is now in the Hayes Hospital for treatment. Her many friends wish her a speedy recovery. Miss Lizzie Choate of Boscawen is the guest of Mrs. Gorham H. Sawyer. Miss Mary E. Robinson of Merrimac, Mass., is visiting her sister, Mrs. George E. Chesley.

10 October 26, 1917 Brown and George Crandon of Boston and Mrs. Ella Gardner of Portland, Me., visited with Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Foster, Saturday. Frank Frisbee of North Andover, Mass., spent Sunday with his aunt, Mrs. Lucy Thompson, at Hilltop Farm. Mrs. Emma Hale was in Haverhill, Mass., a few days last week. Mr. and Mrs. Gorham H. Sawyer and Miss Lizzie Choate of Boscawen went by auto to Rye and Hampton Beaches, Thursday of last week. A number of the members of Jeremiah Smith Grange attended the inspection of the Dover Grange, at Dover, Saturday evening, Oct. 20. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur J. Thompson and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur McDaniel attended the inspection of the East Rochester Grange, Wednesday evening of last week. They reported 200 present. Mr. and Mrs. Theodore F. Cram returned home from Greenwood, Mass., Thursday of last week. Frank Page of Dover was the guest of Fred B. York, Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Smith enjoyed an auto trip to the White Mountains the first of the week. The entertainment which was given for the benefit of Jeremiah Smith Grange, Wednesday evening of last week, by Frank Reynolds of Boston, proved a great success in every way. He was one of the best entertainers ever in town holding the close attention of the large audience for an hour and a half, and the applause he received was evidence of the hearers pleasure. Mr. and Mrs. Woodruff Mason and daughter, Katherine, had an auto trip to Rye and Hampton beaches, Sunday, with Mr. and Mrs. James W. Walker of Dover. The schools in town will be closed Friday and the teachers will attend an institute in Northwood. Married, In Dover, Oct. 21, at the M.E. parsonage, by Rev. Leon Morse, Earl Swain Jones and Miss Katherine Elizabeth Garrity. The double ring service was used and the bride was attended by her sister, Miss M. Esther Garrity, of Lee. After a short trip, they will be at home, 4 Monroe street, Dover.

11 November 2, 1917 Mr. and Mrs. George Callahan of Boston were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Frank H. Dearborn, Sunday, at Brookside Farm. Mrs. Julia Saunders and Mrs. Willis Allen, who have been bisiting their sister, Mrs. Eugene C. Foster, for the past two weeks, returned to their home in Machias, Me., Monday. Mrs. Gilman Y. Durgin and Mrs. Arthur J. Thompson spent the day Saturday in Exeter. Miss Glidden of Epping is visiting her sister, Mrs. Homer James. Mrs. Abby Dudley of Danville is the guest of her son, George A. Dudley, at Wayside Farms. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred C. Durgin took a trip to Manchester, Monday. Mr. Stradler of Boston spent a day recently with Grant Farwell at Brookside Farm. Mrs. Frank Walker of Newmarket visited with her sister, Mrs. Albert B. Dudley, one day last week. Rev. Arthur Brotherston has returned from his vacation and there will be the usual services at the chapel Sunday. Mrs. Jones Stevens is visiting her sister, Mrs. Paul Wiggin, at Newmarket. Miss Helen Wellington of Concord is staying with her father, Walter Wellington, for a few weeks. Miss Mary Maguire of Northwood spent the week-end with Mrs. James B. Walker. A harvest supper will be given at Grange Hall, Tuesday evening, Nov. 6, followed by an excellent programme. Supper served from 6 to 8 o clock. A meeting was called Friday of last week and a Red Cross Branch was formed in Lee, and the following officers were elected. Chairman, Mrs. William S. Caldwell, vice chairman, Mrs. Charles Johnson; secretary, Mrs. Benton Layne, treasurer, Mrs. Frank I. Caldwell. Membership and finance committees were also elected. This branch is to be identified with the Dover chapter.

12 November 9, 1917 Mr. and Mrs. Winfield Robinson and son, Carl, of Epping and Miss Bessie Thompson of Boston were guests of Mrs. Nellie C. Thompson, Sunday. George Crandon of Boston is stopping with Mr. and Mrs. Eugene C. Foster. Frank Watson and Arthur Leathers of Haverhill, Mass., called on Charles Dame, Friday of last week. Mrs. William Carpenter and Miss Irene Carpenter spent the day Saturday with Mrs. Woodruff Mason. Woodbury Burleigh has gone to Springfield, Mass., for a few weeks. Arthur Lassell of Lynn, Mass., was a recent quest of his brother, Morton Lassell. The Woman s Missionary Society met with Mrs. William S. Caldwell, Thursday of last week. A large number were in attendance. The usual programme was carried out and light refreshments were served. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Peach of Malden, Mass., spent Sunday with Howard Glidden. Gorham Sawyer spent the day Wednesday in Concord. James Thom and sister of Hingham, Mass., Mrs. Walker and daughter of Boston and Miss Annie Hale of New York were recent guests of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Ellison. Mrs. Bertha Wiggin of Epping is at Harry Smith s, taking care of his mother. Herbert Wiggin of Roxbury, Mass., is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Wiggin. Miss Bernice Lawrence and Miss Mary Lassell spent the day Wednesday in Dover. The harvest supper which was given Tuesday was well patronized and a neat sum realized. The programme was given by the Centre school children doing the parts well, giving evidence of the good training given them by their teacher, Miss Marietta Breakey.

13 November 16, 1917 Mr. and Mrs. Walter Smith spent Saturday and Sunday in Haverhill, Mass. Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Little and family of Salisbury were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Gorham H. Sawyer, Sunday. Mrs. Muriel Lawrence passed the week end with friends in Newmarket. J. True Bartlett, who has been quite ill the past week, is some better. Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Barton of Newmarket and Miss Rochemont of Boston called at Chester Ellison s, Sunday. Mrs. Arthur Brotherston was in Boston, Wednesday and Thursday. There is to be a whist party and dance at the town hall, Friday evening, for the benefit of the Red Cross. Mrs. William A. Carpenter of Newmarket called on her father, J. True Bartlett, Sunday. Albert Caverno and family of Kittery Point spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Horace Caverno. Miss Christine Randall of N.H.C. was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Fernald, Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Woodruff Mason and daughter, Katherine, drove to Dover, Friday. Miss Mary Maguire of Northwood spent the week end with Mrs. James B. Walker. Mr. and Mrs. Abel Haley and daughter of Wolfeboro were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Frank H. Dearborn the first of the week. Married, in South Weymouth, Mass., Nov. 6, 1917, Charles E. Davis and Louise M. Dullea, both of Lynn, Mass. The ceremony was performed by Rev. J.W. Lees, who married the parents of the groom, Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. Davis, 38 years ago, in Durham N.H. At that time Rev. Mr. Lees was pastor of the church at Lee Hill. He is now 82 years of age and retired from the ministry, making his home in South Weymouth, Mass. The second demonstration in food conservation will be given in the town hall, this (Friday) afternoon at 2 o clock. The subject of this demonstration will be War Breads, and each lady is requested to bring a sample of her war bread, muffins, corn bread or the like, together with the recipe written on paper. Every woman is especially urged to vail herself of the opportunity to benefit from these demonstrations. Prof. Simmers of New Hampshire College will speak in the chapel Sunday morning on the Red Triangle work in the army. Frank Page of Dover visiting with Fred. B. York, Wednesday. Mrs. Nellie (James) Tash passed away at her home in Dover, Wednesday of last week. Funeral services were held Friday and interment was in Pine Hill cemetery. She was born in Lee 67 years ago, the daughter of Joseph and Mary E. James. She is survived by one son, Thomas, of Boston ; two sisters, Mrs. Alice Langley and Mrs. Belle Garrity, and one brother, George P. James. Mrs. Gilman Y. Durgin is entertaining her cousin, Mrs. Wade, of Salem.

14 November 23, 1917 Miss Esther Garrity spent Sunday in Dover. Gorham H. Sawyer was in Somersworth and Strafford, Tuesday. Theodore F. Cram had business in Somersworth, Tuesday. Mrs. Bertha Hanson of Dover is the guest of her sister, Mrs. James M. Lee. Born, Nov. 14, to Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Lang, a daughter. Miss Bessie Glidden of Epping spent the week-end with her sister, Mrs. Homer James. Mrs. James W. Walker of Dover called on her father, J. True Bartlett, one day last week. Born, Nov. 17, to Mr. and Mrs. Theodore F. Cram, a daughter, Barbara Louise. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Cram of Greenwood, Mass., were guest over Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore F. Cram. Charles A. Woodman has the honor of getting the first deer of the season in town. Other lucky ones we have heard of are John Clark, Miles Daniels and Arthur Wiggin. The whist party and dance for the benefit of the Red Cross, which was held in the town hall last Friday evening was well attended, over 100 being present. Lee went over its quota in subscribing for the Y.M.C.A. war fund, its quota being $100 and over $120 was raised, besides $17 which was collected in Wadley s district by Newmarket people. Mrs. Arthur Brotherston returned from Boston, Saturday night, where she had been attending the 50th anniversary of the Woman s Missionary Society of Lee.

Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Cram of Greenwood, Mass., spent Thanksgiving with Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Cram. Walter W. Jones is among the fortunate ones in town getting a deer, shooting it Thursday of last week. Miss Mary A. Chesley came from Wolfeboro, Wednesday, to pass the holidays with her parents., Mr. and Mrs. George E. Chesley. Miss Esther Hart, teacher at the South Side, went to Putnam, Conn., Wednesday, for the remainder of the week. Miss Mary Maguire of Northwood spent the week end with Mrs. James B. Walker. Howard Glidden went to Malden, Mass., Wednesday, for the remainder of the week. Miss Gertrude Foster of Winthrop is visiting her uncle, Eugene C. Foster. Remember the whist party and dance, Saturday evening, for the benefit of the Red Cross. On Friday evening, Dec. 7, a church fair will be held in Grange hall. There will be a Japanese booth, where oriental pictures, novelties and toys will be on sale. There will also be fancy work, candy and mystery booths, etc. A fortune teller will be there, and music and readings will be a part of the entertainment. Admission, 15 cents. Supper will be served from 6 to 8 o clock for 25 cents. Instead of the usual meeting of the Woman s Missionary Society next week, the ladies are requested to meet at the vestry on Tuesday, Dec. 4, to tack a quilt for the fair, Dec. 7.

Cram went to Boston, Monday, for a few days. J. True Bartlett, who has been quite ill for the past three weeks, is better and able to be out of doors. Mr. and Mrs. Abel Haley and daughter of Wolfeboro spent Thanksgiving with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Dearborn at Brookside Farm. John Clark and family of Epping are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Mentor. James B. Walker has moved his steam mill on the J. Burley Keniston lot and will operate the same. Mrs. Thomas Stevens has been at Packer s Falls for a few days, caring for her daughter, Mrs. Al Tuttle, who has been ill. Miss Laura Henderson, teacher at the North Side, went to Lowell, Mass., Wednesday of last week, and remained over the Thanksgiving holidays. Mr. and Mrs. James B. Walker went to Northwood recently. They report good sleighing in that vicinity. Mr. and Mrs. Woodbridge W. Durell of Newmarket were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Smith, Thanksgiving. The third demonstration in food conservation will be given in the town hall, Dec. 14, at 2 p.m. The subject of this demonstration is the uses of corn meal and each lady is requested to bring a sample of corn meal cooked in some form, together with the recipe. Every woman is urged to avail herself of the opportunity to benefit from these demonstrations. A son, Thomas Tuttle, was born recently to Mr. and Mrs. Aleck McRae. Mrs. Belle Garrity and family spent Thanksgiving in Dover. Charles Sawyer, who is attending Yale College, is spending a few days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. G.H. Sawyer. Married, in West Somerville, Mass., Nov. 24, George McDaniel of Barrington and Miss Grace Dodge of West Somerville. Mr. and Mrs. George E. Chesley attended the Chesley reunion on Thanksgiving Day at T. Jewett Chesley s in Dover. Jeremiah Smith Grange held a special meeting, Tuesday evening, and the 3d and 4th degrees were worked on a class of three. A harvest supper was served. There will be a whist party and dance for the benefit of the Red Cross at the town hall, Friday evening, Dec. 14.

William Thompson spent the day Sunday in Epping, visiting his cousin, Matthew Harvey. Theodore F. Cram, who underwent a surgical operation at the Massachusetts Homeopathic Hospital in Boston, Friday of last week, is reported as getting along nicely and expects to go to his parents home in Greenwood, Mass., some time this week. Mrs. Cram and little daughter went to Greenwood last Saturday and both Mr. and Mrs. Cram will stay for an indefinite period. Mrs. Clarence Fernald is visiting friends in Boston, Lowell and Haverhill, Mass. Mrs. Muriel Lawrence is at East Barrington for a couple of week. Mrs. William L. Priest had business in Dover, Saturday. Miss Ada M. Perkins of Rochester was the guest for the week-end of Mrs. James B. Walker. Mrs. Frank H. Dearborn and Miss Hazel Dearborn spent the day Friday of last week in Boston. Mrs. Eugene C. Foster and Miss Mary B. York spent the day in Dover, Friday of last week. Woodbury Burleigh, who has been visiting his children in Springfield, Mass., for the past month, returned home last week. Mr. and Mrs. George A. Dudley went to Concord, Tuesday, to attend the State Grange. Charles Sawyer, who was at home for a few days last week from his studies at Yale College, shot a ninepoint buck. The food demonstration which was to be held this (Friday) afternoon is called off. Leaflets will be distributed among the ladies in town on that subject. Nelson Kinney, son of Rev. and Mrs. George E. Kinney, died at his home in Auburn, Me., Nov. 28. He had an attack of the measles and was getting along nicely, when pneumonia developed, causing his death. He was 17 years of age. Sympathy is extended to them by people in Lee and vicinity in their great sorrow.

18 December 21, 1917 Mrs. William Caldwell, chairman of the local Red Cross branch, announces to ladies in Lee that she has yarn with which to knit sweaters, etc., for those who wish to knit for the Red Cross. Theodore F. Cram, who is in the Massachusetts Homeopathic Hospital in Boston, is gaining slowly. His many friends in town sent him a postcard shower this week, to give him a little cheer. The annual Christmas sale, which was held in Grange hall, Dec. 7, was a success in every way. A very fine programme was given and an excellent supper served. There were fancy work, apron and candy tables and a Japanese booth. Over $50.00 was cleared. Mrs. James B. Walker and daughter, Marion, spent the day in Manchester last Saturday. There will be a whist party and dance in the town hall, Dec. 31, for the benefit of the Red Cross. Woodruff Mason spent the day in Boston, Saturday. Born, in Newana, Alaska, Nov. 3, to Mr. and Mrs. Ernest I. Foster, a daughter. Mrs. Foster, with her two children, spent the years 1914 and 15 in Lee with Mr. Foster s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene C. Foster. While here she made many friends, who will be pleased to hear of the advent of the stork in her family. Mrs. Thomas Stevens had business in Dover, Tuesday. Thirty-one dollars was collected in Lee for the Y.W.C.A. fund. Five dollars was the sum asked for. James B. Walker went to Dover and Rochester, Tuesday. Mrs. Arthur E. Thompson and children went to Boston last Saturday, to visit relatives.

Cartland, cashier of Strafford National Bank, Dover, became the bride on December 24 of Woodbury Hough, formerly of Dover, but now an ordnance sergeant in the U.S. Army. The ceremony took place at noon at the Cartland home, 151 Central avenue, Rev. John A. Chapin of St. Thomas Episcopal church, officiating. The wedding was a quiet one, owing to the death of the groom s brother, Morrill Hough of Denver, who was buried here Dec. 24. The groom is stationed at Camp Zachary Taylor, Louisville, Ky. Boston Globe. Mrs. Hough has spent a number of summers in town at Walnut Grove, the old Cartland place, which is owned by her father, Charles S. Cartland.
