4 Speaker bios 講師略歴 Yoshikawa, Hiroshi Professor Faculty of Economics, Graduate School of Economics, University of Tokyo After graduating from the University of Tokyo s School of Economics, Professor Yoshikawa enrolled in Yale University s Doctor of Economics program, graduating with a Ph.D. in economics in He held posts as assistant professor at State University of New York s Department of Economics and Osaka University s Institute of Social and Economic Research before becoming a professor in the University of Tokyo s Department of Economics in In 1996 he proceeded to teach in the graduate school of economics, and from 2009 (until 2011) he was dean of both the graduate and undergraduate programs of economics at the University of Tokyo. Areas of Research: Prof. Yoshikawa has concentrated on Keynesian macroeconomic theory and Japanese economics, especially analysis of Japan in the 1990s. Recently, he has been interested in Japan s rate of potential growth under a rapidly aging society and he is taking a statistical mechanics approach to macroeconomics. 5 5 Speaker bios 講師略歴 Taishido, Masanori Ph.D., Associate Professor, Faculty of Economics, Toyo University Dr. Taishido was born in Fukui, Japan in He enrolled in Keio University s undergraduate economics program, graduating in He subsequently enrolled in Kyoto University s graduate school of economics and completed the doctoral program in 2006, receiving his Ph.D. in Since then, he has been a lecturer and associate professor at Toyo University. Dr. Taishido specializes in the areas of Economics and Philosophy, and History of Economic Thought. His research concentrates on Hayek s philosophical vision of the rules supporting a free market society, with additional influences from Hume, Adam Smith, John Stuart Mill, and Kant. 6 6 Speaker bios 講師略歴 Nishibe, Susumu Former Professor, College of Arts and Science, University of Tokyo; Critic Mr. Nishibe was born in 1939 in Hokkaido, Japan. He graduated from the Faculty of Economics at the University of Tokyo, where he later went on to become a professor in the College of Arts and Science. Following his academic career, he became a critic. He also helmed the magazine Hatsugensha from 1994 to He currently acts as advisor to the magazine Hyogensha. 7 7 Speaker bios 講師略歴 Fujii, Satoshi Professor, Department of Urban Management, Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University; Special Advisor to the Cabinet (Disaster Prevention/Reduction New Deal Lead) Born in 1968, Professor Fujii attended Kyoto University, where he remained as an assistant professor after graduation. He later held positions as a visiting scholar at the University of Gothenburg s psychology department and as a professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology before taking his current professorship at Kyoto University. His specialties are public policy theory and applied humanities and social sciences. He has received many awards, including the MEXT Award, and he engages actively in debates in the media. His works include: Prescriptions for Mass Society, X-Day: Titan Earthquake, Bullet Trains and Nationalism, Code of Pragmatism, Prescriptions for Social Dilemmas, Strengthening the Archipelago, and Civil Engineering among others. Johnson School of Public Affairs, The University of Texas at Austin Professor Galbraith holds degrees from Harvard and Yale (Ph.D. in economics, 1981). He studied as a Marshall Scholar at King's College, Cambridge in , and then served in several positions on the staff of the U.S. Congress, including executive director of the Joint Economic Committee. He directed the LBJ School's Ph.D. Program in Public Policy from 1995 to He directs the University of Texas Inequality Project, an informal research group based at the LBJ School. Galbraith's new books are Inequality and Instability: A Study of the World Economy Just Before the Great Crisis (Oxford University Press, 2012) and The End of Normal: The Great Crisis and the Future of Growth (Simon & Schuster, 2014). Previous books include The Predator State: How Conservatives Abandoned the Free Market and Why Liberals Should Too (Free Press, 2008), Created Unequal: The Crisis in American Pay (Free Press, 1998) and Balancing Acts: Technology, Finance and the American Future (Basic Books, 1989). 9 9 Speaker bios 講師略歴 Mintzberg, Henry John Cleghorn Professor of Management Studies (Strategy and Organization); Faculty Director (International Masters for Health Leadership) Prof. Mintzberg has been an academic most of his working life. After receiving his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from McGill University in Montreal (1961), he worked in Operational Research at the Canadian National Railways for two years. Since graduating with a doctorate from MIT in 1968, he has been working at McGill as Cleghorn Professor of Management Studies (half-time since the mid 1980s), with stints at other universities in the U.S., France, and England. Over the years he has devoted himself largely to writing and research, especially about managerial work, strategy formation, and forms of organizing. He published Managers not MBAs in 2004, Tracking Strategies in 2007, and Simply Managing in He is completing a monograph entitled Managing the Myths of Health Care, and his attention is now devoted to Rebalancing Society radical renewal beyond left, right, and center. Prof. Mintzberg has worked for much of the past two decades, in collaboration with colleagues from Canada, England, France, India, Japan, and now China and Brazil, on developing new approaches to management education and development. The International Masters in Practicing Management has been running since 1996 and the International Masters for Health Leadership since Both are rather novel ways for managers to learn from their own experience. He teaches in these programs and otherwise supervises doctoral students. In 2007, he and three others developed CoachingOurselves.com, which brings all these efforts to natural fruition by enabling small groups of practicing managers to develop themselves and their organizations in their own workplace. Their MOOC, entitled Social Learning for Social Impact, is due out on EdX in September of In recent years, Prof. Mintzberg has been doing more general writing, including some newspaper commentaries (listed under commentaries). He also likes to collect "beaver sculptures". He has started a TWOG (from tweet + blog; twitter@mintzberg141). In all, Prof. Mintzberg has published about 160 articles (listed on his website with annotations and, where available, web links) and 17 books. His honors have included election as an Officer of the Order of Canada and of l'ordre national du Quebec, selection as Distinguished Scholar for the year 2000 by the Academy of Management, and two McKinsey prizes for articles in the Harvard Business Review. 11 11 Speaker bios 講師略歴 Tanaka, Yayoi Professor, National Institution for Academic Degrees and University Evaluation Prof. Tanaka is President of the Japan NPO Research Association (JANPORA), a member of the board of directors of Genron NPO, a private-sector member of the Committee for the Promotion of Administrative Reform, and a member of the Ministry of Finance s Financial System Advisory Council. She worked at private corporations, the Japan Bank for International Cooperation, and as a visiting associate professor at Tokyo University before taking her current position. Her areas of study are economic theory of NPOs and evaluation theory.
