4 Speaker bios 講師略歴 Ando, Kunitake Honorary Chairman, Sony Life Insurance Company former President, Sony Corporation Kunitake Ando was born in 1942 and graduated from the Economics Department of the University of Tokyo. He joined Sony Corporation in In 1979, he was instrumental in establishing the Sony Prudential Life Insurance Co., Ltd. (now known as Sony Life Insurance Co., Ltd.), becoming Managing Director and Deputy President in In 1990, he was President of Sony Engineering and Manufacturing of America (SEMA). In 1996, he became President of the Information Technology Company and worked to develop the VAIO business. In June 2000, he was appointed President and COO of Sony Corporation. In 2005, he became Chairman of Sony Financial Holdings Inc., as well as Chairman of Sony Life Insurance Co., Ltd. From 1982 to 2008, she was in charge of R&D in the software, system and communication fields and responsible for technology strategy at Ricoh. Hideko received her B.S. and M.S. in Physics from Ochanomizu University and a M.S. in Software Engineering from San Jose State University. She earned a Ph.D. in Computer Sciences from the University of Texas at Austin. Hideko is a vice chairperson of the Japan Information Technology Services Industry Association and a member of the Innovation Network Committee of the Innovation Network Corporation of Japan. Hideko serves as a member of the Liaison Conference for the Promotion of Gender Equality, an activity of the Gender Equality Bureau of the Cabinet Office in Japan. She is also a member of the councils to the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. 5 Kay, Alan President and Founder of Viewpoints Research Institute Dr. Alan Kay is one of the pioneers of object-oriented programming, personal computing, and graphical user interfaces. For this work, Dr. Kay has received the Draper Prize from the National Academy of Engineering, the Turing Award from the Association of Computing Machinery, and the Kyoto Prize from the Inamori Foundation. Alan has been elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the Royal Society of Arts, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Computer History Museum. Alan has held fellow positions at HP, Disney, Apple, and Xerox, and has served as the chief scientist at Atari. He is an adjunct professor of computer science at UCLA and an advisor to One Laptop per Child. 6 Hatch, Mark CEO, TechShop Mark Hatch, CEO and co-founder of TechShop, is a former Green Beret, a self-described revolutionary and a leader in the Maker Movement. He has held executive positions focused on innovation, disruptive technology and entrepreneurship at large and small firms including Avery Dennison, Kinko's and Health Net. The San Francisco Business Times presented Mark a Bay Area s Most Admired CEO Award and Fast Company has recognized him in their Who s Next column. TechShop also won the EXPY Award, given to the experience stager of the year. 7 Ito, Masahiro Chairman, YAPPA Corporation Born September, 1983 in Tokyo, Japan Masahiro Ito founded YAPPA Corporation in December 2000 while still a student at Osaka International high school. In May 2001 YAPPA began its 3D business by closing an exclusive distribution contract with 3Di, an Israeli corporation, to market its Java-based Web3D technology to render 3D scenes on web browsers without any plug-in requirements. This solution was widely adopted by most automobile companies in Japan, and many abroad. Later, in June 2002, YAPPA acquired all of 3Di s technology, intellectual property, patents, and equity. Eventually, YAPPA reorganized its advanced computer graphic technologies to release the Digital Publishing Platform in September 2005, with Sankei Newspaper as an early adopter for the newspaper online web service. In September 2009 YAPPA established a partnership with Dentsu to produce MAGASTORE, the largest digital magazine store in Japan. YAPPA Digital Publishing solutions have been implemented on major applications platforms such as the Web, ios, Android and Windows 8, and adopted by mainstream content providers such as VOGUE Japan Magazine, NikkeiBP Magazine Store, Nissen Smart Catalogue, Softbank s Viewn Magazine Store, R25 Magazine, The Nikkei Online Edition, The Asahi Shimbun Digital and many more. 8 Mu, Rongping Director-General, Institute of Policy and Management, Chinese Academy of Science Mu Rongping, was born in Oct 1960 in Hefei of Anhui Province of China. He received his B.S. (1983) and M. S. degree (1990) from University of Science and Technology of China, and his Ph.D degree (2001)from Technische Universität Berlin, Germany. Dr. Mu worked as a teacher in Hefei University of Technology from , and has been working at the Institute of Policy and Management (IPM), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) since Dr. Mu has been director-general and a professor of the Institute of Policy and Management, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CASIPM) since 2004, the director-general of the CAS Center for Innovation and Development since 2007, and the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Science Research Management (an academic monthly) since In addition, he has been Vice President and Secretary-General of the China High-tech Industry Promotion Society (CHIPS) since 2007 and Vice President of the Chinese Association for Science of Science and S&T Policy Research (CASSSP) since Dr. Mu has published more than 30 papers in peer-reviewed journals and international conferences, and he has drafted documents concerning the National Innovation Policies and the Five Year Plan for National Capacity-building for Innovation. He has published one book in English, entitled Technology Transfer from Germany to China: Case Studies on Chinese Carmakers and Parts Suppliers, and other books concerning Technology Foresight towards 2020 in China, and innovation Development Policy. 9 Staman, Jan Managing Director, Rathenau Institute Jan Staman is the managing director of the Rathenau Institute in The Netherlands. The Rathenau Institute promotes the formation of political and public opinion on science and technology. To this end, the institute studies the organization and development of science systems, and organizes debates and workshops centered on issues and dilemmas in science and technology. The institute also publishes policy-oriented reports on the social impact of new technologies and is actively involved in research leading to scientific publications. Jan Staman s interests focus on how ethical and societal issues are processed - in scientific and technological practices, in politics and in the creation of government policy. 10 Sumita, Takayuki Division manager, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, Fuel Resources Division Born in 1962, Takayuki Sumita graduated from University of Tokyo s Faculty of Law in 1985 before taking a position at the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (now called the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry). In 1991, he went abroad to study at Georgetown University s Graduate School of International Affairs (graduating in 1993). Thereafter, he worked at the Environment Agency and the Industrial Policy Bureau before taking a post as FTA/EPA Planning Officer in While guiding the Japan-Mexico EPA to a substantial agreement, he also established Japan s EPA policy and East Asia cooperation policy. From 2004, he led the promotion of innovation policy and intellectual property management as Head of Intellectual Property Policy and Technology Promotion Section Head, and from 2007 he implemented the eco-point mechanism as Information Telecommunications Equipment Section Head. From July 2009, he was seconded to JETRO and assigned to Belgium as Director of the Brussels office of Japan Machinery Center for Trade and Investment. Stern School of Business, New York University Paul Romer is Professor of Economics at New York University's Stern School of Business and Director of its Urbanization Project. The Urbanization Project addresses a truly historic challenge and opportunity: welcoming an additional 3-5 billion people to urban life in less than a century. The Project's first initiative helps existing cities plan for expansion.
