1 beacon volume 51 SEPTEMBER 2009 Line Your Pockets at the Yard Line Get ready, because this fall, BEK Communications is once again teaming up with area businesses and schools for local tailgate parties and a brand new football contest with a winner at every game! It s not the $15,000 contest, but this one s a sure winner! One contestant will be drawn at each location for a chance to win $400 during this half-time event. The contestant drawn will choose to punt, pass or kick through the goal post from the 5 yard line for $50, the 10 yard line for $100 and then the 25 yard line for $250. The contestant will choose when to use his/her punt, pass and kick options but will need to use all three methods to complete the contest. Total possible winnings will be $400. The amount not won, of the $400 available winnings, will be donated to the school hosting the game (highlighted in bold below). Each contestant is guaranteed $25 for participating plus a consolation prize(s). What could be more fun than watching someone you know compete for a chance to win $400? Being the contestant yourself! Interested fans (must be 18 or older) can stop by the sponsor booth before the end of the first quarter to register for the contest. All other fans, including children, are invited to stop by the booth to register for door prizes. We ve got the spirit and we invite you to join the following sponsoring businesses at a game near you. Support your team and your school for an evening of fun and excitement! 2 Kuchen Contest a Successful Fair Event Winners Announced Four judges volunteered their A kuchen lovers dream come true. palates to pick the best of the kuchens entered at the fair. It was a desirable job, as well as a daunting task for the judges to choose the winners among the astonishing 43 kuchen entries. Some judges could not get enough from last year and returned to judge this year s contest while the new judges were up for the challenge. The judges were Don Mastel, Greg Doll, Steve Lee and BEK Director Bill Becker. The Tri County Fair annual Kuchen Contest, sponsored by BEK Communications was held Friday, July 17, 2009 at Wishek. On a brisk Friday morning in July, bakers from Wishek to Linton and Napoleon to Zeeland gathered around the BEK Communications booth with homemade kuchen in their hands. The reason: To enter their masterpieces in BEK s annual Kuchen Contest. By 10:00 a.m. the aroma of kuchen filled the air at the Tri County Fair, enticing fair goers, young and old alike. The kuchens were arranged on the display table by category: apple, peach, cheese, prune, rhubarb, wedding and other. As one o clock rolled around the judges began what seemed like a never ending journey of judging every entry on appearance, texture and of course, taste. The judges delightfully savored the first bite of each kuchen; however it was clear that after the 43 rd mouthful, the judges were quick to turn down second helpings! The competition was tough but five contestants walked away with prize money and bragging rights in the Tri County area for a year! Congratulations to the 2009 Tri County Fair Kuchen Contest Best in Category winners who received a $25 cash prize. Wedding..Cheryl Wald Peach..Alice Wiest Prune..Alice Wiest Apple..Debbie Bader* Rhubarb.Agnes Ketterling Cheese...Kim Meidinger Other..Kim Meidinger Kim Meidinger makes a sweep with best cheese, strawberry (other) and is awarded the title of overall grand champion winner! Cheryl Wald is a return winner taking the title of best wedding kuchen. Agnes Ketterling baked a winning rhubarb kuchen that had the judges drooling. Alice Wiest's peach and prune kuchen are two of the judges favorites. And the overall grand champion winner is Kim Meidinger who walked away with an additional $50. BEK extends a huge thank you to all the participants and judges. The judges donated their time and taste buds. The participants offered their talents to the fair and the success of the annual kuchen contest was in their hands. Following the contest, the kuchens were donated to the fair for fundraising. All good cooks and bakers have a natural generosity of sharing their talents with those who enjoy tasty food. Thanks to all the kuchen contest participants who make this annual event a yummy success. Thank you to our judges: Don Mastel, Greg Doll, Steve Lee and BEK Director Bill Becker. *Not pictured 2

3 ommon ents Grants Awarded When your community building has a leaky roof and funds are low, what do you do? At the July Board Meeting of BEK Communications Cooperative, the Board of Directors reviewed several ommon ents Grant applications including one from the Zeeland Lions Club to use towards fixing the roof of their community building. Like many small towns, the community building is the central meeting place for hosting special events so the community relies on having this type of facility at their disposal. The board granted $500 to the Zeeland Lions Club for upkeep on the community building. Other organizations that received ommon ents grants for their community projects are listed below: Dakota Lions of Zeeland - $ to use towards electrical work for the town picnic shelter. BEK Board President Leo Meier presents Zeeland Lions Club Treasurer, Gary Wolff, a check for $500. Golden Wing Club - $250 for general purposes for their facility which houses their nutrition program and a place for the senior citizens to gather. Kingdom Kids Computer Club (K 2 C 2 ) - $500 to maintain its computer outreach program to grade school children. Main Street Development of Zeeland - $250 to assist in the meal program for their senior citizens. Sterling Rural Fire Department - $500 for assistance in purchasing a new foamer device for their brush truck. Upcoming K 2 C 2 class accepts a $500 check from Director Doug Kalianoff. BEK s mission and long term goals are not only to provide advanced, quality communications services, but to enhance the quality of life in the communities it serves so you, the member, can live better in your hometown. The ommon ents Grant program was designed to support BEK s ongoing commitment to area communities. Since the program began in July 2004, BEK has awarded nearly $45,000 to communities applying for grants for Community Outreach or Economic Development. Linn Berg, Assistant Fire Chief for Sterling Rural Fire Department, accepts a $500 check from Director Sanford Williams. Community Outreach includes support for those services, activities and events that contribute to the economic viability, health or safety, or general well-being of those residing in the community. Economic Development includes support for communities in their efforts to create new jobs, retain businesses and to provide incentives for prospective or newly developing industries. The needs of communities are numerous. Each new project or update often requires local volunteers and donations. BEK Communications welcomes tax-exempt, nonprofit community organizations or groups in BEK s serving area to apply for its ommon ents Grant program. Applications may be obtained by contacting BEK at and are due by January 15 th and July 15 th of each year for consideration. 3

4 Way BEK When... Remember the 80 s look - big hair, big shirts, leggings and swatch watches? Well, it s the 90 s now and even BEK decides to get a new look. Members voted 302 (yes) to 57 (no) at the Annual Meeting in June 1990, to change the name of BEK Telephone Mutual Aid Corporation to BEK Communications Cooperative. Along with a new name came a new logo. Just a couple of months later, a Desert Storm breaks out in the Persian Gulf. In 1991 BEK completes fiber optic connections to all twelve exchanges with its final 67 miles of cable installation completed between the Wilton Central Office and Pettibone. BEK takes part in offering a new technology by providing circuits and terminal equipment for Inter-active Television (ITV). The initial schools set up with this service were Tuttle, Wing and Wilton. If BEK news would have made Johnny Carson s final monologue on the Tonight Show May 22, 1992 it might have included the following tid bits: (1) Did you hear BEK Communications Cooperative has had the ability to block all collect and third number billed calls from being billed to subscribers? No wonder the kids quit calling! (2) You want facts? BEK says they can provide you FAX! Documents can now be sent over a phone line from business to business with a fax machine; incredible! (3) There s rumor that BEK is developing a plan to introduce a new service soon - Direct Broadcast Satellite. Television will never be the same in Burleigh, Emmons, Kidder, McIntosh, Logan and McLean Counties. In New York City, a van bomb explodes February 26, 1993 at the World Trade Center killing six and injuring over 1,000. Later that year, BEK holds a groundbreaking ceremony to begin construction of a new headquarters building. The headquarters will move from 121 East Broadway to 200 East Broadway in Steele. Daily progress could be viewed from just across the street! Baseball fans get the big K when a labor strike by Major League Baseball players results in an early termination of the season and cancellation of the World Series in September Meanwhile, BEK members score big with a beautiful new headquarters facility. The members were invited to an open house celebration October 3, new members Hazelton - Temvik Stuer Michael & Richel Linton Becker Vanessa Von Euw Dennis Weninger Marie McKenzie - Menoken MacDonald Steve & Terry Petersen Carl K Napoleon Christofferson Judy Donally Katherine Schatz Anton A Sterling - Driscoll - Moffit Heupel Melvin & Erlene Strasburg - Hague Corr Donald & Susan Haak Darel Hystad Cassie Ibach Marcella Mary s Corner Gifts Murrey Stanley K Nagel Mike & Ellen Tappen - Dawson Crystal Springs - Lake Isabel Osborn Quinton Zenker Bill & Roxanne Wilton McLean Jameson & Rhonda Schafer-McLean Rhonda Wing - Arena Seelye Kody Wishek Bertsch Nita Christofferson Curt & Jolene Meidinger Jeffrey J Scallon David & Debbie Zeeland Rogers Tracy Shaw Chiropractic Health Question: Who believes you can never have enough Friends?
