2 Course Outline- The course is split into three areas of study and has a total of 200 marks. Two areas are practical - Expressive and Design Folios. These folios are produced in class and continued in the pupil s own time. This can be done at home and/or after school during Supported Study. The Expressive folio is worth 80 marks (36.5% of total) The Design folio is also worth 80 marks (36.5% of total) Two x A2 sheets for each folio are submitted to the SQA for external assessment. National 4 and National 5 (N4, N5) share a common course; the level of presentation is based on the quality of each outcome. There is no practical exam for art and design. The third area of study is Art & Design Studies - this is a written component. It involves pupils studying, observing and responding to the work of artists and designers. Candidates are assessed through a traditional, formal exam for this element and it is worth 40 marks (20% of total) N5 pupils only

3 Support Art and Design staff are available, virtually every day after school and most lunchtimes, to help pupils with their work. This can be in a group or on a oneto-one basis. Homework Homework encourages pupils to practise techniques and reinforces classwork. It is important to remember that all practical work contributes towards either Unit work or Course Award. Pupils will also be given essays to prepare and practise for class tests. Exhibition There will be an exhibition of work from last year s Higher and Intermediate pupils on Wednesday 3 December.

4 Unit Pass: Expressive Unit Passes are internally assessed, but may be scrutinised by an SQA Verifier Pupils must produce work at the minimum C level in order to be put forward for the Course Award. Pupils need to pace themselves and complete tasks throughout the year. We have hand-in dates which, if kept to, avoid any last minute rush. Hand-in Date for Expressive Unit Pass Session : Thursday 18 September - Expressive Following each hand-in, pupils are given verbal and written feedback and a second opportunity to re-submit their work. Re-submission date Thursday 23 October

16 Question Paper. Section 1 - Expressive Art Studies Question 1 10 marks Artists communicate and express their ideas about their subject in a variety of ways. Identify two works by different artists that you have studied. These should be based on similar subject matter and/or the same theme. With reference to these works in your answer, compare each artist s use of: subject matter composition/arrangement colour. Which of the two works is the most successful? Give two reasons.

18 Expressive Art Studies: Study Cards - Still Life Blue Fan and Orange Chair (1922) by Francis Cadell oil on canvas (61 x 51 cm) The title gives a clear description of the work and draws your attention to two of the objects, this must be to highlight them. The date is I think that this must have been quite an unusual style for this period because it is less realistic than other works of the time. The size is just a bit larger than an A2 sheet of paper. I don t think Cadell would have too much time on this as there is not a lot of detail. Take your Choice (1855) by John Frederic Peto oil on canvas( 51 x 77 cm) I would not be able to visualise the work with the just the title. I think it helps me understand the painting as it makes more curious than I am with other still lifes; I am wondering what book I would choose I am surprised at the date of the piece because, to me, the subject matter and style look much more modern It is quite a large painting and it must have taken a quite a bit of time to complete as there is so much detail in it and it is very realistic

20 Question Paper. Section 2 Design Studies Question 7 10 marks Designers show creativity in their approach to developing designs. Identify two designs by different designers that you have studied who have worked in the same design area. Compare both designs in terms of: Fitness for purpose Style Materials and / or techniques. Which of the two designs do you find most appealing? Give reasons.

22 Design Studies: Study Cards Graphic Design. The layout of this poster is clear and uncluttered. The designer has positioned the main figure towards the top half of the frame. The small amount of lettering that has been included, has been placed in the top right hand corner. This puts most of our focus on the movement of the figure. The image takes up most of this poster. The designer has placed the text in boxes above and below the image. The brown background of the text keeps it visually separate from the image making both easy to see.
