1 Product Design and Technology (PD&T) Unit 3& Transition/ Holiday homework Resources required: A3 Visual Diary, coloured pencils, 2B and HB pencils Teacher: Mr Devine Student:
2 Product design and technology (PD&T) units 3& Designers play an important part in our daily lives. They determine the form and function of the products we use. They transform ideas into drawings and plans for the creation and manufacture of useful products that fulfil human needs and wants. In recent history the use of resources to create an ever-increasing array of products has given designers an increased responsibility to think sustainably. Students develop an understanding of the consequences of product design choices. They develop the necessary skills to critically analyse existing products and to develop their own creative solutions. VCE Product Design and Technology can provide a pathway to a range of related fields such as industrial, product, interior and exhibition design, engineering, and fashion, furniture, jewellery, textile and ceramic design at both professional and vocational levels. Moreover, VCE Product Design and Technology can inform sustainable behaviours and develop technical skills to present multiple solutions to everyday life situations. It contributes to creating confident and unique problem solvers and project managers well equipped to deal with the multi-disciplinary nature of modern workplaces. VCAA VCE Product Design & Technology Study Design PD&T units 3 and 4 covers all aspects of a products design and manufacture, including; the role of the designer, product development in industry, comparisons of similar products and the care of products. Unit assessments consist of: -School assessed course work (SAC) -School assessed task (SAT) Unit 3 Outcome 1 SAC The designer, client and end user in product development Outcome 2 SAC Product development in industry Outcome 3 SAC Designing for others- Design folio must be completed and the product manufacture should be near completion Unit 4 Out come 1 SAC Outcome 2 SAT Outcome 3 SAT Product analysis and comparison Product manufacture Product evaluation and promotion Note: School assessed task (SAT) Design Folio, production and evaluation are completed over Units3&4. This must be finished and submitted before the end of term 3.
3 Holiday home work The school assessed task in Unit 3&4 consists of the research, design, manufacture, evaluation and care of a product. It is essential that you complete the following exercise in preparation for the start of the school year to maximise success in the course. Preparation to be completed before the start of the school 2014: 1. Obtain a client or end user. The client/ end user can be a relative, neighbour or friend. Write a detailed profile of the selected client or end user. 2. Design a client consultation log. In this log keep detailed records of meetings with your client/ end user 3. In consultation with your client (1) decide what it is they would like you to design and manufacture (2) Prioritise specifications of the agreed project from most important to least important giving a reason for priority. -Specifications of the project can include budget, size, material, colour, style, constraints and anything else that might be relevant. 4. Get pictures from magazines, draw and annotate three (3) different design options of the project to show your client/end user. Each design option will include annotations, size, different viewing angles, textures and tones. Each design option should include magazine pictures, photos any visual that will help the client/end user to decide on a product. Each design option should be at least 4 A3 pages. 5. Consult with client/ end user and to see which design option they like. The design the client/end user choses draw detailed working drawing. 6. Keep a record of all research undertaken regarding each product, e.g. internet sites, magazines articles, distributors, shops visited, brochures. 7. Read the product design factors and underline any words you do not understand. A) In your folio write these words along with the dictionary definition and then the dictionary definition rephrased into your own words B) Summarise each product design factor into your own words. 8. Visit as many as possible furniture stores to gain inspiration for your design. Keep a record of the stores when you visit them. Some recommended shops are Mark Tuckey custom made furniture, 231 Johnson Street Fitzroy. Christian Cole furniture, 5 Dairy Drive Coburg. Jimmy Possum, 14 Alexander parade Clifton Hill. Product evaluation Evaluation of prototype/product quality using product evaluation criteria. Recommend improvements 7. Working drawings and pattern drafting Drawings including technical drawings, showing product specifications (i.e. sizes and construction methods) needed for production planning Any step can be revisited throughout the Product design process 1. Identify client, user, need, problem or opportunity 6. Design options (presentation drawings), selection and justification of preferred option A series of potential solutions evaluated to determine which best suits the requirements of the brief 2. Design brief Outline of the context, constraints and considerations 5. Visualisations Concept sketches and drawings of whole or part of potential ideas to meet the requirements of the brief 3.
