National 5 Art and Design Question paper - Session 27-8 Commentary Commentary on Candidate A response to Q Girl Before a Mirror by Pablo Picasso and Who Are You by Christina Troufa Q Commentary Mark (a) The candidate makes a full and detailed comment on the use of colour and the effect on the Picasso work. A comment develops a justified point on colour, describing it as unnatural Troufa s limited colour palette and its effect is discussed. A valid point is made on the use of blue and orange and the effect. Troufa s naturalistic and realistic palette is contrasted with Picasso s approach. The candidate makes a detailed comment about Picasso s technique. A further comment is made on Picasso s painting technique. The point about the impasto technique does not gain a mark as the effect is not fully explained. A comment about the way Troufa uses brushstrokes would normally gain a mark but the maximum of 7 marks has already been allocated for responding to two prompts. Likewise the comment on the negative space technique would normally gain a mark, but all available marks have been allocated. A comment is made in relation to the mood of the Picasso painting. Another justified point is made regarding a critical mood would also gain a mark. However the maximum 8 marks has been allocated for this part of the question. The mood is the Troufa painting is explained in terms of pose and facial expression which would gain a mark if all of the marks for this part of the question had not already been allocated. The candidate identifies the Troufa painting as the most creative and justified this in terms of perspective. Another well justified point is made regarding the effect of negative space and the colour palette. / SQA of
National 5 Art and Design Question paper - Session 27-8 Commentary Q (b) The personal influence of the suicide of Casagemas is explained in terms of the change in Picasso s colour palette. A social influence is identified and the impact of Picasso s subject matter is explained, with examples of works given. The cultural influence of Post-Impressionism is fully explained in terms of Cezanne s influence on Picasso s Cubist work with an example given. The social influence of the Spanish Civil War is identified with the impact on Weeping Woman explained. The influence of the Spanish Civil War is also related to the monochromatic style of Guernica. 5/5 TOTAL 5/5 SQA 2 of
National 5 Art and Design Question paper - Session 27-8 Commentary Commentary on Candidate B response to Q Manacoyta by Alfredo Ramos Martinez and Self Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird by Frida Kahlo Q Commentary Mark (a) A point is made about Kahlo s use of colour and the effect created. The candidate discusses the use of colour in the Martinez painting and although it is quite basic they talk about the effect of the green and compare it to Kahlo s approach. Media handling/techniques: There is an attempt to discuss technique but it is not done in an effective manner and does not demonstrate the knowledge and understanding expected at this level. The mood and atmosphere of the Kahlo is discussed with a justified reason relating to the effect of the subject matter. A point is made about the mood of the Martinez painting but it is very simplistic and not fully explained. The candidate identifies the Kahlo painting and gives some basic justification on why it is the most creative, relating this to the detail and the narrative. (b) Some biographical information is given on Kahlo s health issues and related to the fact she puts monkeys in her paintings. However, the comment is very simplistic and is not explained in art terms (eg using terminology such as subject matter ). A comment about the reason for her beginning to paint and being selftaught explains one impact of her health condition. Another biographical comment is made about the artist s marriage but the candidate does not relate this to any of Kahlo s work although there is plenty scope to do so. Kahlo s nationality is discussed but the impact on her work or practice is not explained. 4/ /5 Total 5/5 SQA 3 of
National 5 Art and Design Question paper - Session 27-8 Commentary Commentary on Candidate C response to Q The Blue Vase by Paul Cezanne and Still Life in the Studio by Leon Morrocco Q Commentary Mark (a) Biographical information on Leon Morrocco does not relate to any aspect of the question and is not awarded any marks. The candidate discusses the use of colour in relation to the atmosphere created. A further comment on colour relates to the contrast of warm and cold colours and their effect on atmosphere. The use of colour in the Morrocco painting is compared with the artist s usual technique demonstrating knowledge and understanding. Media handling and the effect on the Cezanne piece is discussed. A point is made on mood and atmosphere in relation to the Cezanne work, but some of the justification repeats an earlier point made on colour and another comment shows a lack of understanding of Cezanne s approach. Mood and atmosphere is discussed in terms of colour, but the explanation is not detailed enough to gain a mark. There is a reference to composition and Morrocco s working methods. However, this is a speculative comment and is not factually accurate as the artist s compositions were set up very deliberately. There is an expectation in the response to the mandatory question that there will be evidence that candidate has studied facts about the artist. They are not awarded marks for speculation where facts on the topic are readily available. The Morrocco work is identified as the most creative but the first justification is far too general to gain a mark. The next justification is effectively related to the style. 5/ (b) Biographical information is given about Cezanne but is not related in any way to his work or practice. The influence of Impressionism on his practice (painting technique) is explained. There is some understanding of Post-Impressionism conveyed in relation to Cezanne s working methods and style. 2/5 Total 7/5 SQA 4 of
National 5 Art and Design Question paper - Session 27-8 Commentary Commentary on exemplar Candidate A response to Q3 Highly effective Lindsay Michie (c ) by Anne Redpath Q3 Commentary Mark A point is made about the focal point of the composition, justified by the positioning of the subject and the effect of plain background. Colour is discussed with perceptive comments on the effect of the harmonising colours in the background. The candidate makes reference to the contrast of the warm colours in the face with the dull background. A further comment is made about harmonising colours in the shirt collar which, although simple, is enough to gain a mark. The effect of the dark hair colour is explained. The impasto technique and its effect is fully explained. The application of paint in relation to the quality of the brushstrokes is explained. A comment is made regarding the scratch marks on the background and their effect. In response to what the portrait communicates, there is an explanation relating to the effect of pose. A further justification relates to facial expression and the naturalistic composition. / SQA 5 of
National 5 Art and Design Question paper - Session 27-8 Commentary Commentary on exemplar Candidate A response to Q7 Atmospheric Re-entry hat by Maiko Takeda and Lyons Gold Blend Tea hat by Philip Treacy Q7 Commentary Mark (a) A comment on scale of the design is related to visual impact. A further justified comment on visual impact links the design to the shape of a sea cucumber. The candidate makes a justified comment relating to the similarity of the visual impact of Treacy s design. The comment about the purpose of both designs is not developed in terms of fitness for purpose so does not gain a mark. A comment is made about the fitness for purpose of the Takeda design but it is not substantiated. The candidate does not explain in what way the design is innovative and special so is not awarded a mark. The candidate makes a comment on the Treacy design being for an event but does not fully explain in what way it is eye-catching, elegant or comfortable so is not awarded any marks. A comment explains the target audience in terms of who might wear the hats and at what kind of events. The candidate gives a justified reason as to why they think the Treacy is most successful. (b) A biographical fact is given about how Treacy s interest in fashion began but is not explained in terms of the impact on his work or practice. The fact that Treacy worked for Steven Jones is mentioned, but the candidate does not explain the impact on his work or practice. It is stated that Treacy attended the Royal College of Art but the impact on his work or practice is not explained. The influence of nature is explained well in terms of how it has interpreted visually in a specific collection of hats. 5/ SQA 6 of
National 5 Art and Design Question paper - Session 27-8 Commentary The influence of Isabella Blow is explained in terms of the opportunities she introduced, impacting on his practice as a designer (range of clients). 2/5 Total 7/5 SQA 7 of
National 5 Art and Design Question paper - Session 27-8 Commentary Commentary on exemplar Candidate B response to Q7 Plastic Bracelet by Peter Chang and Dragonfly Brooch by Rene Lalique Q7 Commentary Mark (a) The candidate touches on the purpose of the design and the target market but doesn t develop the point in any way. The candidate makes unsubstantiated opinions on visual impact. The candidate makes a comment on the inspiration but doesn t relate this in a convincing way to visual impact. The candidate attempts to identify the target market for both pieces but does not give any justification. (b) Biographical information is given without relating this to the impact on Lalique s work or practice. A comment is made about the designer s clients but this is not further explained in terms of the impact on his work or practice. The fact that Lalique went on to design glass products is mentioned but the influences or factors which caused him to do this are not explained. The candidate mentions that Art Nouveau is inspired by nature but does not explain how this influence can be seen in any of the designer s work. The popularity of Art Nouveau is discussed but the impact on the designer s work or practice is not explained. / /5 Total /5 SQA 8 of
National 5 Art and Design Question paper - Session 27-8 Commentary Commentary on exemplar Candidate C response to Q7 Vertigo poster by Saul Bass and Dylan poster by Milton Glaser Q7 Commentary Mark (a) The candidate discusses visual impact and relates it the use of cut paper and bold colours. A full and detailed point is made about the factors that contribute to the visual impact in the Dylan poster. In relation to fitness for purpose, the purpose of the poster and how the designer has successfully conveyed the theme of the film is clearly understood. Elements that make the Glaser poster function successfully are explained. The appeal to the target audience is explained on how the bold clear message has been communicated. The target audience for the Glaser poster is identified and a justified comment explains why this is the case. The poster regarded as the most successful is identified. One justification is related to the appeal to the target audience, but it is repetitive of an earlier point and not fully explained. The next justification related to the quirky and unusual approach again, this is repetitive of a point made at the start and is not developed any further. 6/ (b) The influence of the movie industry, in particular Otto Preminger, is explained. The influence of the topic of one film is clearly explained. The influence of Hitchcock is explained. 3/5 Total 9/5 SQA 9 of
National 5 Art and Design Question paper - Session 27-8 Commentary Commentary on exemplar Candidate A response to Q Wedding Jewellery Set (25) by an unknown designer Q Commentary Mark An opinion is give on target audience but this is not justified using design terminology or in design terms. An opinion on visual impact is unsubstantiated. A reference is made to the potential cost and there is an attempt to and relate this to target market but not in any convincing way. An opinion is given on the wear ability but this is not developed. The comment on style is quite simplistic but expresses an opinion which has been justified in relation to the materials and pattern. / SQA of
