1 SUMMER ASSIGNMENT Mz. Maynard/DSA C007 AP DRAWING/AP 2D DESIGN Here are 10 summer assignments (DUE first day of school = 2 AP project grades) to complete in time for your return to DSA late August. Make them your own. Don t wait but work over the summer to keep your hand warmed up, drawing across the page, writing to capture thoughts, images, and ideas. Learn about yourself through your words and images! Figure out a plan! YOUR PLAN! YOUR INTERESTS! Keep a sketchbook (8 1/2 x 11 minimum) throughout the summer. Work directly on these assignments on your sketchbook pages. These 10 required summer assignments will help shape your AP plan of creative works for the year...sent to AP MAY Brainstorm: LIST all the materials you have worked with (pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, colored pencil, oil sticks, pastels, watercolor, acrylic paint, oil paint, colored inks, coffee, walnut ink, tar, etc.) over 2 separate spreads (which is your sketchbook open flat using both left and right pages). Use more pages if you are so inclined. Be inventive, creative, clever, make this a fun reference for YOU. On Spread #1: List specific materials you handle well and are accomplished using. Create thumbnail sketches of work you have already created that support your beliefs. Some of these may become jump off points for creating new work for the BREADTH section (12 excellent pieces using a wide variety of media while deeply investigating Elements and Principles of Art). Why are they successful? Make specific notes What could be improved? Show small or large drawings/compositions On Spread #2: List materials you have not yet used or ones which you do not feel confident using (yet). Create thumbnails of work already completed which you do not feel are successful.
2 Why aren t they working? Make notes! How could they be improved?...draw out these ideas This list will help you see where you need to play around over the summer to gain new, or more experience, with different materials. NOW DO IT! SHOW OFF, play, experiment, fail, experiment more on the next pages. 2. Place your own cleverly creative symbols by your very favorite ways of making art or ones that you d like to learn to master from these 2 spreads. Place your own different symbol by those materials you have challenges using (and possibly cannot stand)....just BEFORE DSA RESUMES...re mark this list. Has anything changed? WHY? 3. Next 6 10 pages: Write down specific ways of using you feel confident about and what techniques require more work (for example: using charcoal/smudging, smoothing, crosshatching techniques ). Create designs/images using that material and those techniques which show off your most recent skills and test your abilities. BE BOLD! Don t be perfect! Use watercolor in your sketchbook to express in paint what you are writing about in words...go light with water as your sketchbook is likely to have paper best for drawing media. Paint as if you are merely drawing loosely with a wider tool (paintbrush). NOW: Choose 4 different materials from your list and complete this same assignment on different pages. This will create a clear plan of what you need to work on for the BREADTH section (12 very accomplished pieces demonstrating your abilities with a multitude of media...technically excellent and interesting/compelling compositions). 4. Draw and/or paint 20 large thumbnails (3 x 5 or larger, square compositions, etc): Any projects that would interest you...to stretch you and help you gain more experience. Create compositions that truly fill every space on the page (including background, foreground, middle ground). Sketchbook pages required: at least 5, up to...? Assignments next year will be graded by the percentage of surface covered so use those empty areas well...how will you fill the spaces around your main focus? Do it
3 early before you add the main ingredient!! Experiment within those thumbnails. The following are merely ideas from which to jump: An expressive self portrait with an interesting background (part of a room, hanging drapery, friends peeking over your shoulder, monsters, who knows)? A still life (flowers in vase on table with patterned fabric, objects cropped tightly)? Three ripe figs resting against one another, tenderly rendered (drawn)? A series of shells, all different sizes and shapes, some enlarged, some shrunk? One object seen from different points of view? Drawn both enlarged and tiny? Favorite childhood toys gazing at you surrounded by some odd environment? A favorite piece of clothing on a hanger or draped over a chair arm? Worn by a favorite friend posing and then painting a second portrait with you wearing the same shirt but with a different attitude, expression, pose, background? Making funny faces and capturing them quickly with fresh marks/gestural? Copying a beautiful drawing, painting, or print, to learn specific drawing and painting skills that that artist employed? Copying artwork you admire...then making a second work where you make it your own by placing your own face or entire body in the same setting and pose? Light dramatically hitting a face, an animal, a house, a vase, anything? Landscape, cityscape, junkyards, who knows? 5. Generate 4 pages of ideas drawn from your very own interests. The AP Studio Art CONCENTRATION is all about figuring out what YOU, individually, want to speak about, stand for, depict, illustrate, create, refine, make more raw, and/or visually sing about. WHAT MATTERS TO YOU? WHAT APPEALS TO YOU?
4 Your CONCENTRATION will be a minimum of 12 excellent pieces that are a body of work depicting of an issue of great importance and meaning to you...shown through a wide variety of compositions. It may take a while to come up with IT! Second semester you will take on the creation of work for the CONCENTRATION section of your AP portfolio. Be thinking and writing about it throughout your summer break. {You, as a class, may challenge me to let you work on Breadth and Concentration work together throughout the year...let me know} Mull over ideas and options (and write them down NOW!!) well ahead of the start of school. CONCENTRATION themes often change any number of times before artists settle on what is genuinely interesting, deeply challenging, and meaningful to them. Brainstorm wildly on these pages writing down what you like working on...what captures your attention...write down everything! Brainstorming is about emptying yourself and every crazy or sane idea on the page without judgement. Do not let your brain and internal (or external) critics cut in and make you stifle your barely grown ideas. They are all valid and not even yet born. Treat your ideas kindly and with tenderness. Let them matter on the page even if you do not use them eventually. Write lots of ideas just for fun...you will be distilling subjects/imagery/political opinions/your thoughts/your feelings/etc. to eventually help you decide what genuinely matters to YOU for your 12 CONCENTRATION pieces created second semester. Perhaps you will inspire yourself to begin work on your ideas this summer...go for it! NOW! Distill down your lists after a week of writing down the last idea. CIRCLE the few that matter but leave the rest untouched. 6. Take photographs that support your CONCENTRATION interests...these photos will become your reference book in early September. (For example: if Nature is your focus, create photographs that capture details, colors, textures and forms which you admire in the world of Nature and want to capture/depict in your AP submission) Your photos will be housed in a binder in early September. You are responsible for printing the images to bring to school as your very resource from which to work. DUE 7. Draw in your sketchbook to broaden your skills and abilities. Investigate your usual way of using LINE, SHAPE, VALUE, TEXTURE, FORM, and shake it up.
5 Look at tons of art books, websites, and actual work of artists. SHOW ME what appeals to you...notate names of artists, titles, dates work was created, where is it currently (in a private collection, owned by the artist or their family, destroyed, missing, in a museum, in a park, under a bridge???). Do a quick or slow drawing of this work that interests you! Look up, AND PRINT, artists work that inspires you (for your AP binder) Create spreads in your sketchbook which illustrate new ways of working with ( for example LINE) by borrowing from what you see from resources and references. Observe and use nature as a resource. Use more pages to keep stretching. Use doodling and playing on the page as a way to make lines you normally would not make. Use as much room in your sketchbook as you need. Let it become plump...not perfect. 8. Do 2 page spreads for: SHAPE, FORM, SPACE, TEXTURE, COLOR, VALUE...that equals 10 sketchbook pages, by the way! 9. Use the Principles of Design to design/illustrate/create...minimum 1 page: BALANCE... EMPHASIS... MOVEMENT... PROPORTION... PATTERN... REPETITION... RHYTHM... VARIETY... and...unity. (9 to 18 more pages) (Students creating AP 2D Design portfolios especially will be investigating and creating work stressing these Principles of Design. Various combinations of these Principles must be in evidence in submitted work. Keep this in mind throughout your sketchbook work with ideas for your summer assignment...due first day of school) (AP Drawing Portfolio students will be making use of these Principles as well but are especially stressing mark making and composition...ap Drawing students also create this assignment in their sketchbook during the summer) 10. Visit a museum (or several museums) in the area or when on vacation with your sketchbook in hand. Find 2D and/or 3D work that interests you. Sketch it. Sit down and work slowly or work on a rapid gestural piece. Look closely, be nosy, try sitting low or changing your perspective to make it more challenging as you warm up. Learn from this work. Increase your powers of observation. Squint. Fill the page...do not make it small and tight! Draw out to the edges...
6 Create at least 6 pages of drawings from museum collections you see...in person. Use different materials BUT some museums will not welcome pens or wet material unless you have permission. Have fun copying from life. Do even more than 6! OKAY... Let the play begin! Have a great time inventing on your pages. Work from life and observation (rather than only from reference!!).
