Design Proposal To Whom It May Concern: The class of Digital Media III (Section 2) would like to propose a full scale model to be built in the 623 S. Wabash building. The proposed location for this model is the west end lounge space of the 8th floor. As students of the Interior Architecture program, our class is learning how to build space-defining structures in a digital format that can be physically constructed in a full-size scale. The ability to build our model is integral to our understanding of how digital designs relate to the construction and assembly of a structure. We are planning for the build-out model s material to consist of.08 thick, vacuum-formed-polystyrene. The build-out of this model would be considered the final project for Digital Media III, requiring your urgent consideration for approval. In order to build, we would need an approval by November 10th. We appreciate your timeliness in consideration. Best, The class of Digital Media III 3
Proposed Time line 11/ 17/ CNC and Vacuum Forming Tutorials Students will learn techniques used to fabricate designs at full scale 11/ 24/ Half Scale Fabrication and Development 12/ 01/ Revised Design Development 12/ 08/ Full Scale Fabrication Students will observe issues with the design during half scale fabrication and correct the issues presented before beginning full scale fabrication 12/ 15/ Final Full Scale Fabrication and Instillation 4
Proposed Design To Build While our original design spans a length of roughly 30 feet, we realize building a model at this scale is a lofty and unrealistic goal. We are proposing that only 1/3 of the model be completed at full scale, equaling 10 feet long and roughly 9 feet tall at it s highest peak. 5
Inspiration We gained inspiration from looking at very different elements of the Renaissance period. While Lauren studied the forms found on the architecture and in the intricate construction of St. Peter s Basilica, Ally focused on the fashion worn during the period and the condensed folds and curves found in the collars of mens attire. 6
Ideation We built two models based on our interests in the architecture and fashion. After exploring the forms that intrigued us, we began to focus on real-world examples of them and how we might combine and construct our ideas. 7
Design Development Using Rhino, we were able to create a curve that correlated with the movements found in the collar of the Renaissance clothing. We then used the panel command to create triangular planes mimicking the architecture of St. Peter s Basilica. From there, we punched out windows in the panels for depth and contrast within the model. Once the model looked like we wanted it to, we used a flattening command to project the sides and folds of the model onto a flat surface so that we could laser cut to fold the model into a physical object. Once the model was projected flat, we experimented with different PPI and laser strengths of the Laser Cutter to get the exact effect we wanted on our model in order to fold. 8
SIDE ELEVATION SIDE ELEVATION 9
FRONT ELEVATION BACK ELEVATION 10
PLAN 11
We designed the structure to have cut-outs both to increase the design aesthetic and to allow light in and around the structure. 12
13
The structure was very thoughtfully located; by placing it in the only walkway, it forces an audience to experience it, if for no other reason than they need to get into a classroom. 14
