1 ART 1230 Structure Spring Semester 2013 Meeting Time: MW: 8:50-11:40 am Classroom: Seigfred Hall 407 Matthew Ziff, Associate Professor, Interior Architecture Chair M. Arch, Architect, NCIDQ School of Art College of Fine Arts Office: Grover Center W325 Office Phone: Office hours: T: 1-3 TH: 10-12, 1-3 Adam Leestma, Graduate Teaching Assistant Project 4. "Outside: A Wall (of table top size) " : One Model, Two Drawings "A Wall With A Window To A View" create/include a viewed object or scene seen through the window be made using a minimum of three (3) different materials must include a visually and physically supportive base must include a human figure to stand between the wall and the view must include/use sheet metal (of some sort) contain a good amount of physical and visual 'detail'

2 OR "A Wall Of Arches and Buttresses" a minimum of three arches and six buttresses be made using a minimum of three (3) different materials be made so that the shadows that result from a point light source shining on the wall be visually exciting! must include/use some amount of clay in some form contain a good amount of physical and visual 'detail' OR "Four Stairways With Four Landings " must include/use some amount of wood (of some sort)

3 contain a good amount of physical and visual 'detail' must create four 'places' at the landings: each landing is to be created for a particular purpose: landing 1 is for An Archer to shoot landing 2 is for A Violinist to play landing 3 is for An Orator to speak landing 4 is for A Thinker to contemplate must include four (4) human figures representing these listed 'Fine Print' Clarification: You are required to 'interpret' these project statements. This means that you are to use the statements as beginning points, from which you will make thoughtful, interesting, creative, and visually meaningful decisions about how YOU are going proceed with the project. Everyone in the class will have a different interpretation of the project. This does NOT mean that you can/should do 'whatever you want.' The project is formulated to provide you with a base, a foundation, from which you will have responses, thoughts, and a course of action. Remember: "Can I... or Are we allowed to..." are not questions I want you to ask. The project requires that you think, and say, "Matthew/Adam, I am thinking that it might be interesting if I..." or "My interpretation of the 'wall' is that it will be..." This is YOUR project now. The challenge before you is to TRANSFORM the written description into a physical, visual object with a high level of quality, as listed below. Objective: Choose ONE of the object types. Build it to meet the requirements. This means that the object needs to have visual and physical qualities and characteristics that are engaging, seductive, appealing, complex, clever, well thought out, functional, delicate, strong, and resolved. The piece that you create should make use of and exhibit a sense of 'structure', 'order', 'unity', elegance, overall form, composition, balance, and general intent. These projects are to be made at a higher level of physical craft than any of the previous projects you have made in this class this semester. Your skills should be better now than when we began in January. Your critical eye should be more refined, and your aesthetic sensibility should be more refined and demanding than it was in January.

4 The materials used in this project must be used well, under your control, and intellectually substantial. Joints, connections, surface finish, color and form should all be intentional, purposeful, and well crafted. Drawings: One Plan drawing One Elevation drawing Produce two drawings, a plan, and an elevation, that represent the piece in two dimensions. Use two pieces of good quality drawing paper, both the same size and shape, and graphite pencil, to make the drawings Key Concepts: Wall View Buttress Joints/Connections Strength of Material Thickness of Material Sizing of Pieces and Parts Craft Form Mass vs Void Line vs Plane "Presence" We will begin this project Wednesday, February 27, immediately after our critique of the "A Useful Structure" project. Time Allowance: 4 class sessions Due: 8:50am Monday, March 25 All of the projects you do in this class need to be photographed, both in process, as you are working on them, and when completed. You will need these for your portfolio submissions in the future.
