In 1957 pop artist Richard Hamilton listed the characteristics of pop art in a letter to his friends the architects Peter and Alison Smithson: Pop Art is: Popular (designed for a mass audience),

2 In 1957 pop artist Richard Hamilton listed the characteristics of pop art in a letter to his friends the architects Peter and Alison Smithson: Pop Art is: Popular (designed for a mass audience), Transient (short-term solution), Expendable (easily forgotten), Low cost, Mass produced, Young (aimed at youth), Witty, Sexy, Gimmicky, Glamorous, Big business. Whether all these record covers from my collection fit this description is definitely arguable, but I hope they reflect some of the spirit and influence of Pop Art. The collage includes 57 photographs and nine waxworks that depict a diversity of famous people, including actors, sportsmen, pop stars and gurus chosen by the band.

The Faust Tapes Faust, 1973 Cover art by Bridget Riley The Faust Tapes is the third album by the German band.

Bridget Riley s artwork was used without permission, and is replaced on later re-pressings of the album.

The collage includes 57 photographs and nine waxworks that depict a diversity of famous people, including actors, sportsmen, pop stars and gurus chosen by the band. John Lennon s choices of Jesus and Adolf Hitler for the sleeve were rejected. The Faust Tapes Faust, 1973 Cover art by Bridget Riley The Faust Tapes is the third album by the German band. The album sold 50,000 copies in the United Kingdom thanks to a marketing gimmick by Virgin Records that saw it go on sale for the price of a single. Bridget Riley s artwork was used without permission, and is replaced on later re-pressings of the album. Andy Warhol s Velvet Underground The Velvet Underground, 1971 Design by Davis/Berney/Wade A compilation album of the Velvet Underground released by MGM Records in Originally released as a double LP, the cover artwork and inside gatefold sleeve feature Andy Warhol's paintings of Coca-Cola bottles. The album was released in the UK to capitalise on the interest from Warhol's film Pork. This Is Our Art The Soup Dragons, 1988 Artwork by Ross Sinclair Popular, witty, gimmicky, mass - produced...ross Sinclair (the band s drummer) certainly ticked many of the Pop Art reference points in his 1988 album cover for The Soup Dragons.

Treacy s own record label was named Whaam! Records, after the Lichtenstein painting.

4 ...And Don t the Kids Just Love It The Television Personalities, 1981 Cover by Daniel Treacy Records by the Television Personalities are awash with Pop Art imagery. Dan Treacy, the band s leader, mixed 1960s aesthetics with a post-punk DIY sensibility. Treacy s own record label was named Whaam! Records, after the Lichtenstein painting. The Best Of Jimi Hendrix The Fremont s Group, 1971 Cover photo by Didier Jenoudet You would be forgiven for thinking that this is a Jimi Hendrix album. But it s not. A bargain bin tribute album by a band called The Fremont s Group. The cover has elements drawn from both Pop Art and Op Art... Spilt Milk Pete Astor, 2016 Pink Flag Wire, 1977 Photo by Annette Green A simple, vibrant, splash of cartoonish colour. Very Pop. Pete Astor is also Senior Lecturer at the University of Westminster, where he teaches, researches and writes about music With music as stark and stripped-back as its cover, the first Wire album is an influential classic. The use of such impersonal, mundane, imagery is very influenced by the Pop Art aesthetic.

6 #1 Record Big Star, 1972 Neon Sculpture by Ron Pekar This was designed by the sculptor and painter Ron Pekar. It is the only record sleeve he ever designed, and its simple, advertising-themed, design is a bold and brilliant image. Days Of Future Passed The Moody Blues, 1967 Cover by David Anstey On the cusp between Pop Art and the later Psychedelic Art, which was much influenced by Pop. The intertwining cover painting by David Anstey can be viewed from all angles. Ege Bamyasi Can, 1972 Artwork by Ingo Trauer Again, the use of mundane imagery in a different context puts this plainly in the Pop Art camp. With Warhol clearly being an inspiration, also. Temple Of Fiddes Barrett s Dottled Beauty, 2018 Artwork by Alan Cynics (aka Alan Da- Every copy of the album (100 copies only) has an individually made collage as the front cover. "Ege Bamyası" means "Aegean Okra" in Turkish.
