Individually, each has been considered an orchid oddity, or botanical, of interest mainly to the seriously addicted enthusiast. These plants have a brief deciduous period in winter, when the plants need a definite dry rest period bordering on neglect. These robust orchids are native to lowland tropical forests in Central and South America and are usually grown in warm or intermediate conditions. Commercially, Catasetum have occupied a small market niche on the edge of a sea of Cymbidiums, Cattleyas, Phalaenopsis, Dendrobiums, Epidendrums, and so on. This talk by Fred Clarke of Sunset Valley Orchids will feature a widescreen computer slide show on some of some excellent species of Catasetuems and how to grow them. Fred has been growing orchids for 33 years and has been hybridizing for 28 of those years. With over 26 years as a professional grower and manager in the horticultural industry, Fred applies these skills at his orchid nursery; Sunset Valley Orchids, located in Vista, California. He is a passionate orchid grower whose curiosity in orchids is broad and varied. Although developing Cattleya hybrids has been his sustaining interest, he is also actively creating new Bulbophylum and Paphiopedilum hybrids plus some others to be named if they work out! His pioneering work in Catasetum intergeneric hybrids led to the development of several notable hybrids, most recently the grex, Fredclarkeara After Dark, which produced the blackest flower ever witnessed. This grex has received eight FCC s and three AM s on the first flowers shown for judging! Fred is an Accredited Judge in the Pacific South Judging Region. His plants have received hundreds of quality awards from the American Orchid Society.

There s no guarantee that all photos will be used, but every effort will be made to include some. Saturday, April 5th, 2014 The auction is the most important fundraiser we do. It enables us to have high quality speakers and plant tables and, in general, meet our goals of education and conservation of orchids each year. It s every member s responsibility to help the club sponsor a highly successful auction. There are committees to join, plants to donate, and, of course, the auction to attend to make it the most successful. Please plan on helping out in as many ways as you can so we can continue to enjoy the great speakers and plant tables during the entire 2009 year. At the January meeting, I will have committee sheets ready for volunteers to sign up: Transportation: People are needed to pick up plants the week before the auction and deliver them on Friday, April 4th between 2 p.m and 7 p.m. Set-up: People to help make final arrangements of tables at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 4th. Plant Numberers: People to help number plants and set them on tables. Recorders: 2 people to record the sale of plants during the auction. One should have a laptop computer. Runners: Several people to carry plants to the auctioneer and from the auctioneer to the plant hotel during the auction. Plant Hotel Keepers: Teams of people who will put sold plants into boxes by paddle number. Lots of folks are needed. Money Collectors: 1 person to assist the Treasurer to collect money from purchasers as they collect their plants to leave. Plant Sale Table: 2 people will sell orchids inside during the auction. Clean-Up Committee: People to sweep and carry out trash. So start thinking about the ways in which you can help to make this a most successful auction. (Don t tell anyone but I ve already killed 3 Catasetums, or I thought they were dead and threw them away because I didn t know they lost their leaves. ) As they say, if you don t succeed, try, try again. The San Diego County Cymbidium Society meets on the third (3 rd ) Wednesday of the month, except in July, August and December.
