He will be speaking on Costa Rican orchids. He will not have plants for sale. We will have a farmer s market, so bring plants you re looking to sell or come prepared to find that something you ve been looking for. 2 November Speaker Juan Francisco Morales Quiros Juan Francisco Morales Quirós was born in San José, Costa Rica, in In 1993 he obtained a BS degree in Forestry and in 2002 he qualified as a Doctor in Oral Surgery. Recently, in 2008 he obtained his Master s degree in environmental management and now he is a PhD student in Costa Rica. During 1991 and 1992 he worked at the National Herbarium of Costa Rica. Since 1993 he has been working in the Botany Department at INBio, where he has published more than 150 scientific papers, as well as several books and field guides, mostly of Orchids and bromeliads. He is the principal author of the project Handbook of Plants of Costa Rica, conducted by the Missouri Botanical Garden (MO) and founded at the beginning by the NSF. The first 4 volumes of that project were published in the last 6 years. He is a specialist on neotropical species of the family Apocynaceae and has contributed to the study of this group of plants for different projects in Latin America. He has also carried out field work in El Salvador, Nicaragua, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Bolivia and Brazil and has taught several courses on botany and systematic taxonomy within and outside Costa Rica. Now, he is working on a field guide for the bromeliads of Central America and a series of field guides for the Costarican orchids (the first two volumes published in 2005, second edition in 2009, volumes III, IV and V published recently, PDF covers are included) 2
