First of all, the November Postcard Club meeting will take place at Santa Clara University, Archives & Special Collections Department at the University Library, 3 rd floor, November 9 at about 6:30pm. A power point presentation will be made on the Spanish influence and Spanish / Mexican families in early California. At this event, we will have a Guest speaker, Margarete Miller with a hands-on workshop presentation on stamp/postcard art. See below Announcement. So while you may eat and converse, you can be put to work and be creative too! Follow-up contact will be made on food items you would like to bring and share before the December event. I hope you can attend both events. Spouses, partners, friends are invited also. Note the article on Walt Kransky, Mitchell postcards and the Bancroft Library and other articles in this Year-end Newsletter. A large San Jose Stamp Club / Filatelic Fiesta Stamp Show is coming up on November 12 and 13 at the Elk s Lodge, off Minnesota and Hwy 87 area; as is Penpex Stamp Show In Redwood City, December 3 and 4. Both shows will have dealers with postcard boxes too! In the meantime, Happy Fall and a pre-happy Thanksgiving season. Hubert Jansen What Could You Make With Stamps? --A Workshop with Margarete Miller at our December potluck event Join Margarete as you create distinctive holiday cards or ornaments using an assortment of decorative card stock, vintage papers, and (of course) postage stamps. The goal is for each person to complete 2-3 personalized pieces of art completely unique and different from everyone else. What Margarete will bring: blank cards an envelopes, blank ornament shapes, an assortment of card stock, vintage papers as embellishments, samples of cards and ornaments for inspiration What Participants should bring: scissors, glue stick, a small stash of cancelled stamps to use or share. (Note: Club member Brian Jones will bring boxes of stamps to share) Optional: Any unique or interesting scraps on hand Note: though this activity takes place at the Christmas Potluck, the art work does not necessarily need to have a Christmas or holiday theme.

Holiday Greetings Holiday postcards during the period 1907 to 1910 were studied as a PhD dissertation by Daniel Gifford at George Mason University in 2011.

He also reviewed historical events and cultural trends to provide a framework for knowing what the various images meant to the users of postcards.

4 Holiday Greetings Holiday postcards during the period 1907 to 1910 were studied as a PhD dissertation by Daniel Gifford at George Mason University in Gifford was able to review data and census records to understand who was circulating the cards. He also reviewed historical events and cultural trends to provide a framework for knowing what the various images meant to the users of postcards. After acquiring the two postcards below from our San Jose Postcard club card collection, I noted that they both have a patriotic theme. These are divided back cards from the early 1900 s. I was surprised by this theme and by how many patriotic- themed Thanksgiving cards I found online at cardcow.com However, I reread Gifford s dissertation and saw that he had analyzed postcards with four types of patriotic emblems connected to Thanksgiving. He notes that the visual imagery of a rural landscape with patriotic symbols such as a flag or banner was a message in support of anti-urban and anti-immigrant trends among the postcard users at that time. Even though about a third of the nation s population in 1910 lived in cities of 25,000 or more, most postcards depicted farms, villages and countryside rather than urban images. Gifford speculates that this idealized version of the countryside was indicative of the fact that the rural dwellers felt threatened by industrialization. They include a number of types of cards such as large letter political and scenic postcards. His calendar postcards are worth collecting as these examples from 2012 show. Fulton is taking a break from making postcards and is instead making tiles which you can see at his Facebook page for larry fulton studio 555. We hope Fulton returns to making more postcards in the future.
