1 2016 NW CHOPIN FESTIVAL RULES AND INFORMATION APPLICATION PROCESS 1. The online Application period will be between October 1, 2015, and December 31, Registration period may end earlier, if slots are filled. 2. APPLICATION FORMS AND APPLICATION PAYMENT WILL BE AVAILABLE ONLINE ONLY. Once you submit your application electronically, there will be no changes allowed. 3. The Chopin NW Competition and Festival encourages applications from pianists (U.S. citizens or U.S. residents) of all ages. Up to 15 participants can be accepted from any one teacher, if applicant is under age 18. Space is limited to a total of students, all categories. Therefore students applications will be considered on a first- come, first-served basis. Additional compliant applications will be placed on a waiting list. 4. IMPORTANT: Fill out the online application. After clicking SUBMIT, you will be automatically directed to a page to make an online payment. This will complete your online registration. 5. Application fees for accepted participants are non-refundable; fees for applicants for whom there is no room will be refunded. 6. Prior Gold Medalist winners of the Concerto division may enter again, but must use a different movement or other selection(s) from the Concerto division repertoire.

2 COMPETITION 1. The repertoire is limited to the music of Frederic Chopin. 2. Competition will take place on January 23, 2016 at Bellevue Presbyterian Church. 3. RESCHEDULING IS NOT POSSIBLE. All students in all divisions must reserve 9 am to 5 pm for the January 23rd 2016 Festival. Time blocks in which the student will compete will be released January 10, Students are NOT required to be present other than 30 minutes prior to competing. 4. All students MUST register with the Chopin Check In Desk 30 minutes before competing. 5. Students may view their performance time online. They will be posted no later than January 10, Students are NOT allowed to exchange time slots. 7. Multiple works of Chopin may be performed as long as the total playing time does not exceed the time limit for the student s division. 8. Students must time pieces carefully as the time allotment will be based on the time submitted.

3 9. Divisions: DIVISION A: ages 9 and under. Any piece(s) by Chopin. Maximum playing time is 5 minutes. Application fee: $40 DIVISION B: ages Any piece(s) by Chopin. Maximum playing time is 7 minutes. Application fee: $45 DIVISION C: ages Any piece(s) by Chopin. Maximum playing time is 8 minutes. Application fee: $50 DIVISION D: ages Any piece(s) by Chopin. Maximum playing time is 10 minutes. Application fee: $55 DIVISION E: ages Any piece(s) by Chopin. Maximum playing time is 12 minutes. Application fee: $60 DIVISION F: adults, ages 19 and older. Any piece(s) by Chopin. Maximum playing time is 12 minutes. Application fee: $60 DIVISION G: Concerto or Andante Spianato et Grand Poloniase, maximum age is 18 (Concerto in E, any single movement or combination of 2nd and 3rd movements, Concerto in F, any single movement or combination of 2nd and 3rd movements, Andante Spianato and Grand Polonaise COMPLETE). Application fee: $65

4 10. No warm up time is allowed at the performance site. Violators will be disqualified from participation. 11. Original scores of the music must be approved at the Festival registration desk. Photocopied music is NOT allowed per copyright law. 12. Measures must be numbered. 13. Music must be memorized 14. Any changes or omissions of the entered repertoire will disqualify the student from prize winning. 15. After performing, students are responsible to pick up their music from the room monitor. 16. The judges decisions are final. Please make every effort to stay for the announcement of winners of your division and pick up certificates and adjudication sheets. We will do our best to post the competition results on the website by the evening of January 23, 2016.

5 FESTIVAL WINNERS CONCERT 1. Gold Medalists, EXCEPT CONCERTO winner, are required to perform in the Gold Medalists Concert on Sunday, January 31, 2016, at 2 PM at the University of Washington School of Music, Brechemin Auditorium. Gold Medalists who cannot comply with this obligation will not receive prize money. After the announcement of winners, the winners must confirm at the registration desk: A. That they acknowledge their winning. B. Which piece they will play, if multiple pieces were entered, as only one piece is allowed to be performed in the concert. (Exception: Two short Preludes or Mazurkas, not to exceed 4 minutes total.) 2. Silver Medalists are NOT required to perform in the Silver Medalists Concert, BUT are encouraged to perform. Winners will be able to sign up ONLINE ONLY on the evening of January 23, Concerto winner is required to perform their winning movement(s) or Andante Spianato & Grand Polonaise Winner s Concert with Orchestra Seattle, Saturday, April 16, 2016, 7:30 p.m. at First Free Methodist Church with Maestro Clinton Smith, Conductor.

6 AUDIENCE ETIQUETTE 1. Cell phone and pagers must be turned off at all times in the performance or concert halls. 2. Use of cameras, video or audio recording equipment is not permitted in the performance rooms. 3. Talking is not permitted in the competition rooms during the performance. 4. No small children are allowed in the competition rooms. 5. Enter and exit the performance rooms only between performances. PLEASE do not contact Bellevue Presbyterian Church or University of Washington to inquire about this competition as they will have no information. TEACHERS, FAMILY AND FRIENDS ARE WELCOME AT THE COMPETITION, AND THE CONCERT PERFORMANCES.
