1 SOUTHEAST S MOST ENGAGING ARTS FESTIVAL ARTFIELDS LAKE CITY, SOUTH CAROLINA APRIL 20-28, 2018 ArtFields 2018 Artists Rules ELIGIBILITY The artist must be 18 years of age or older on or before November 9, The artist must be a resident for 6 consecutive months prior to the submission date of one of the following 12 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. The artist s submission does not infringe upon any third party s proprietary rights and must not violate any intellectual property laws. The artist must submit an artwork created by him- or herself. The submission may involve appropriation with significant artistic ramifications of existing imagery created by someone other than the submitting artist. The submission cannot be identical to or a copy, reproduction or only slightly altered version of someone else s existing imagery. If someone else s imagery forms (part of) the impetus, basis, and/or materials for the artist s submission, the artwork in the submission must in concept, design, approach, composition, and/or execution be significantly different from the source imagery. In such a case of appropriation, the artist also is required to provide with the submission three photos of the source imagery. The artist s submission must be in the medium in which the artist initially executed the work as opposed to a reproduction or digital version of that work. If the artist considers reproductions or digital versions of his or her existing creation to be the artwork as opposed to the initial creation itself, the artist should note in the submission under medium that the submission is reproduced from or a digital version of another creation and explain the submission s concept in the artist s statement. The artist s submission must be one single work of art. That single work of art may consist of multiple components such as paintings, panels, sheets, objects, etc. Submissions consisting of multiple components must

2 form a coherent conceptual whole. This conceptual whole must involve more than the circumstance that the artist created, selected, and/or assembled each component of the submission. Submissions consisting of multiple components cannot be merely a grouping of components without conceptual purpose and internal coherence, perhaps shown together as a single work of art only at ArtFields. A work of art consisting of multiple components that is for sale during ArtFields must be assigned one single price for the artwork as a whole as opposed to being priced per individual component. The artist s submission must be wholly owned by the artist as of November 9, The artist s submission must have been completed within two years of the submission deadline. ArtFields 2017 winners, except for Merit and Category Awards, are not eligible to participate in the ArtFields 2018 competition. An artist who submits as part of a collaborative group or collective cannot also submit as an individual artist; an artist who submits individually cannot also submit as part of a collaborative group or collective. To remain eligible, artists must sign an Artist and Venue Hosting Agreement with an approved ArtFields Venue and adhere to all of the terms in the agreement. Click here to see Artist and Venue Hosting Agreement. SUBMISSIONS AND FEES Artists or artists collaborative groups or collectives may submit one 2-D or 3-D artwork in any medium. The submission may be a painting, sculpture, ceramic work, textile work, photograph, drawing, mixed media work, collage, assemblage, digital or new media work, video or film production, art installation, performance piece, etc. While artists are asked to indicate in the submission whether their submission is a 2-D or 3-D artwork, ArtFields reserves the right to change the designation. Artists must complete the online submission form, submit high-resolution images (at least 300dpi/1MB), and pay a $25 non-refundable entry fee through the Slideroom Submission Management Program that can be accessed on The submission deadline is Thursday, November 9, 2017 at 5 p.m. EST.

3 Submitted images must represent the artwork submitted by the artist as accurately and professionally as possible. ArtFields encourages artists to submit multiple images for an artwork that might benefit from being judged from different angles and views, such as most 3-D work, assemblages, certain mixed media works, works involving minute detail or heavy textures, etc. If artists have a preferred setting, for instance indoors or outdoors, in which they would like to see their artwork exhibited, the submitted image(s) should include or reflect that setting. If there is no settingspecific image of such an artwork, the artist should clearly explain what the preferred setting is in the special requirements section of the submission. ArtFields does not guarantee that an artwork will be exhibited in the preferred setting as indicated by the artist. Artists whose submission has special requirements for exhibiting the work should explain these requirements clearly in the special requirements section of the submission. Artists may submit concepts or works-in-progress as long as the artist can clearly articulate their completed work through sketches, other documentation, and the artist s statement. Submitted artwork has to adhere to size limitations set or provided by ArtFields here in the submission rules; after an artwork s acceptance for ArtFields; during installation of an accepted artwork for ArtFields; or at any other time. ArtFields has the final decision at all times and in all cases as to how much space will be allotted, and where, to each artwork accepted for ArtFields based in part, but not exclusively, on available space and locations as determined by ArtFields. The maximum amount of running feet of wall space available for an indoor 2-D artwork or any other indoor artwork mounted, placed, abd/or installed at, near or against a wall is 20 feet, unless otherwise agreed upon by ArtFields. The maximum amount of square feet of space available for an indoor 3- D or installation artwork is 400 square feet, unless otherwise agreed upon by ArtFields. ArtFields determines whether for exhibition installation purposes an artwork is considered 2-D or 3-D. The maximum vertical space available for any indoor artwork is determined by ArtFields and informed in part but not exclusively by available space, including the height of the walls, in the venue where the artwork will be exhibited.

4 No artist is guaranteed the maximum space indicated here for indoor artwork, regardless of the dimensions listed by the artist for the artwork in the submission. ArtFields has the final decision on space allotted to any artwork at ArtFields, indoors or outdoors. In the submission, artists must provide dimensions for 2-D works for both the artwork framed and unframed; if the work is to be exhibited unframed or the artist considers the frame to be part of the artwork, framed and unframed dimensions should be the same. The latter applies also to 2-D artwork with multiple components, for which the artist must provide the total space required to exhibit the work, including possible frames and the required space between individual components. In the submission, artists must provide for 3-D works and installations the height, width and depth of the work. For film, video and new media works, when applicable, artists must provide the length of the production and indicate in the special requirements section how the work should be shown. Submitted works will be reviewed and rated through the Slideroom Submission Management Program by a selection panel of visual arts professionals. Approximately 400 works of art will be selected to compete for prize money in Lake City, S.C., during ArtFields GUIDELINES FOR ACCEPTED ARTWORK The artist will be notified whether the submitted artwork is accepted for ArtFields 2018 by December 20, 2017, through the account provided in Slideroom. The artist will receive a venue invitation no later than January 31, The artist is responsible for keeping their Slideroom account, address, contact phone number and current mailing address up-todate. If an artist sells the accepted artwork prior to ArtFields or in any other fashion ceases to wholly own the artwork, the artwork is no longer eligible for ArtFields, will be removed from the competition, and a new artwork cannot be substituted for the initial, accepted entry. Any sales of artworks that are part of ArtFields are pending until the end of the event, after award winners are announced. Artwork accepted into the competition must be invited by and exhibited at an approved ArtFields Venue for the duration of ArtFields.

5 Artists cannot select the venue where their submission will be exhibited; ArtFields decides which artworks will be shown in which venues. While artists may indicate a preferred setting in which they would like to see their artwork exhibited, ArtFields does not guarantee that an artwork will be exhibited in the preferred setting as indicated by the artist. Images of accepted artwork; artwork information, including dimensions and price; artist statements; and artist biographies, resumes or lists of career highlights, submitted through Slideroom or otherwise, will be used for online and catalogue publication, publicity and marketing, labels, and possibly elsewhere at ArtFields discretion. The deadline for updated images of accepted work is February 9, Artwork accepted for ArtFields should be ready to hang or install. For 2- D and other wall-mounted artworks, artworks should have weightappropriate D-rings, eye bolts/screw eyes, and/or wire; all eye bolts/screw eyes should be outfitted with wire. For digital media, film, video, etc., that require a projector, computer, and/or monitor, etc., to display, the artist must provide such equipment for installation and use during ArtFields. Artworks deemed not ready to hang or show as delivered will be excluded from ArtFields. Artists must include clear instructions and images for artworks other than installations that require special instructions as to how they should be mounted, placed or installed. Failure to provide such instructions and images may result in the artwork being rejected. Installation artists are required to install their work themselves in the space assigned by ArtFields. LOGISTICS FOR ACCEPTED ARTWORK The artist is responsible for transportation and cost of transportation of the artwork to, and removal of the artwork from, the assigned venue where the work will be shown. Artwork that is not site specific or an installation must be delivered or otherwise arrive March 13 17, 2018 and removed no later than May 11, Installation of installations and other site-specific work may begin March 19, 2018, and must be completed by April 7, Installations and site-specific work must be removed no later than May 11, Artists

6 creating an installation or other site-specific artwork must make an appointment with ArtFields to deliver, install and remove their work. Except for installation artists, who must install their work at ArtFields, artists are not required to travel to Lake City, S.C. A team of trained and experienced art handlers will be installing the entries at each of the approved, selected venues. GUIDELINES FOR ARTIST PROMOTIONAL MATERIALS The artist s personal promotional materials cannot exceed 7 on one side, and 5, on the other. The artist is responsible for the cost of producing personal promotional materials. ArtFields and the designated Venue determine how and where artist s promotional materials are displayed; the artist must not provide tables, pedestals, racks or anything else to display their promotional materials. CONDITIONS Entries that do not conform to their submitted digital image or submitted concept may be rejected at the sole and exclusive discretion of ArtFields. Entries will be removed from competition based upon impracticability or impossibility of installation or continued exhibition, or if they create issues with fire or public safety hazards, as determined by ArtFields. Entries may be moved to a venue other than the one with which the artist signed a venue agreement at the discretion of ArtFields for any reason or no reason. Artists who are abusive toward ArtFields or Lake City Creative Alliance staff, volunteers, venue hosts or the public may be removed from ArtFields at any time at the sole discretion of ArtFields, with the artist s entry no longer eligible for awards. The winners of the first place Grand Prize, Second Place, and People s Choice 2-D and 3-D Awards agree to transfer all ownership of and reproduction rights of the artwork to the Lake City Creative Alliance. All attempted sales of ArtFields entries are considered pending until the end of the event on April 28, If the Grand Prize, Second Place

7 and People s Choice 2-D and 3-D Awards winners are pending sale, those sales are voided upon acceptance of the award. All winners will receive their prize money in the form of a check, sent to the address provided by the artist, within 10 working days after the conclusion of ArtFields. RETRIEVING ARTWORK Entries remaining after 6:00 p.m. of the removal date of May 11, 2018, will be disposed of by ArtFields at its absolute and exclusive discretion, with no recourse or remedy available to the artist.
