Kelly STRING Competition February 4, 2018 (Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass) This annual piano competition for pre-college students, honoring Dr. J. D. Kelly, Professor Emeritus, Arkansas State University, had traditionally been held during the A-State Summer Piano Festival since It is now a separate event, and is open to pre-college as well as undergraduate collegiate students. Make checks payable to MUSIC TEACHERS ASSOCIATION OF THE DELTA Competition Rules: 1. First and Second Prize Winners from previous years are eligible to compete again. 2. $25 Entrance fee and Application are due December 1, NO EXCEPTIONS. Make checks out to Music Teachers Association of the Delta. 3. String students are strongly encouraged to bring their own collaborative pianists. If one is not available, a fee of $75 is due upon notice of acceptance into the Final Round (Live Audition) by January 1, Make checks out to Music Teachers Association of the Delta. 4. Video Round: Students will prepare all competition technique and repertoire in a video. Pianist videos will be sent via and/or video link to Dr. Lauren Schack Clark at lsclark@astate.edu and String videos will be sent via and/or video link to Dr. Chi Young Song at csong@astate.edu. If video files are too large to send via , we suggest uploading your video on YouTube and sending us a link, or using an online file sharing service such as pcloud (free, up to 5 GB). 5. Applicants will be notified of acceptance to the Live Round of the competitions by December 15, Five levels, with first four determined by grades in school: Level 1: Grades 1-3 Level 2: Grades 4-6

2 Level 3: Grades 7-9 Level 4: Grades Level 5: Collegiate Undergraduate, through age 24 (provide proof of age and school status with application) 5. Students must bring 5 copies of their competition pieces for the judges, with every measure numbered and first pages of selections marked with a paper clip or tab. Only one copy must be an original, published copy. Pieces purchased online electronically are acceptable. 6. Competition Repertoire: Pianists are required to perform both Repertoire and Scales, Arpeggios, Cadence/Chord requirements for both pre-screening round and live round. There is no scale requirement for string players. PIANO: Two pieces in contrasting styles, performed from memory. Repertoire must be standard classical repertoire, and must be approved in advance by the competition administrators. Transcriptions may be used with approval. Concerto movements are NOT allowed. 10-minute total time limit (including scales, etc.) for Levels 1 through 3, 15-minute total time limit (including scales, etc.) for Levels 4 and 5. STRINGS: For Level 1, (Grades 1-3), Level 2, (Grades 4-6), and Level 3 (Grades 7-9), and Level 4 (Grades 10-12), One work of applicant s choice. For Level 5 (Collegiate Undergraduate up to age 24), a fast movement of a major concerto OR a virtuosic piece. 10-minute total time limit for Levels 1 through 4, 15-minute total time limit for Level 5. Scales, Arpeggios, Cadence/Chord requirements for Pianists PIANO: For more details about each Piano exercise, and a notated version, scroll down. Level I, Grades 1-3: Prepare Pentascales, 2-octave cross hand arpeggios, and cadences (I-V7-I) in the keys of the solo pieces performed. If both pieces are in the same key, also prepare a pentascale, arpeggio, and cadence in the relative major or minor of that key. Level 2, Grades 4-6: Prepare 2-octave scales hands together, 2-octave cross hand arpeggios, and cadences (I-IV-I-V7-I) in the keys of the solo pieces performed. If both pieces are in the same key, also prepare a scale, arpeggio, and cadence in the relative major or minor of that key. Level 3, Grades 7-9: Prepare 4-octave scales hands together, 4-octave arpeggios with thumb turns in root position and inversions, and cadences (I-IV-I-V7-I) with chords in the right hand and single notes in the left hand, in the keys of the solo pieces performed. If both pieces are in the same key, also prepare a scale, arpeggio, and cadence in the relative major or minor of that key. Level 4, Grades 10-12: Prepare 4-octave scales hands together in sixteenth notes, with quarter note = 100, 4- octave arpeggios with thumb turns in root position and inversions, and cadences (I-IV- I 6/4-V7-I) with chords in the right hand and single notes in the left hand, in the keys of the solo pieces performed. If both pieces are in the same key, also prepare a scale, arpeggio, and cadence in the relative major or minor of that key. Level 5, Collegiate Undergraduate up to age 24: (provide proof of age and school status with application)

3 Prepare 4-octave scales hands together in sixteenth notes, in 3rds, 6ths, and 10ths, with quarter note = 100; 4-octave arpeggios with thumb turns in root position and inversions, cadences (I-IV-I 6/4-V7-I) with chords in both hands, 4-octave scales in quadruple octaves, in the keys of the solo pieces performed. If both pieces are in the same key, also prepare scales, arpeggio, and cadence in the relative major or minor of that key. Prizes for both Pianist and String Players at each level: Each contestant will receive a Medal for Participation. Ties in each category are possible. In the event of a tie, each student will receive the appropriate trophy or medal, and the prize money will be divided equally among the winners. Any number of Honorable Mentions may be named in each category. Level 1: Grades st Prize: Trophy and $50 2 nd Prize: Medal and $25 3 rd Prize: Medal Level 2: Grades 4-6: 1 st Prize: Trophy and $75 2 nd Prize: Medal and $50 3 rd Prize: Medal Level 3: Grades st Prize: Trophy and $150 2 nd Prize: Medal and $100 3 rd Prize: Medal Level 4: Grades *1 st Prize: Trophy and $200 2 nd Prize: Medal and $150 3 rd Prize: Medal *For students graduating high school in 2018: Opportunity for Piano and String Scholarships at A- State for entrance in Fall 2018, with preference to those majoring in music. Level 5, Collegiate Undergraduate up to age 24: (provide proof of age and school status with application) **1 st Prize: Trophy and $200 2 nd Prize: Medal and $150 3 rd Prize: Medal **For students graduating college in Fall 2017 or Spring/Summer 2018: Possibility for a Graduate Assistantship at A-State for entrance in Fall 2018, for those majoring in Piano Performance, String

Master Classes: Students participating in the competition may also elect to perform in a Piano Master Class with either Dr. J. D. Kelly or Dr. Lauren Schack Clark, or a String Master Class with Arkansas State University String Faculty Members. 15 EXACT TOTAL TIMING: (Pianists only: Including both pieces and all scales, arpeggios, and cadences) Minutes Levels 1, 2 and 3: Total time allowed 10 minutes, including all scales, etc. Levels 4 and 5: Total time allowed 15 minutes, including all scales, etc. Repertoire must be standard classical repertoire, and must be approved in advance by the competition administrators. If a students signs up for a Master Class and is not selected for the final round of the competitions, he or she can still participate in the Master Class.
