2 CARDINAL CARTER ACADEMY FOR THE ARTS MUSIC STRINGS Grade 7, 8, 9 AUDITION REQUIREMENT SHEET ARRIVAL: Candidates should arrive at least 30 minutes before the scheduled audition time. They will sign in and be directed to the appropriate place for their individual warm up. WHAT TO BRING: The candidate should bring their instrument, mouthpiece and reed (we can provide Percussion instruments and a Tuba if needed). Three (3) copies of their solo piece selection, and any missing registration items. ADJUDICATORS: The adjudicating teams consist of teachers and professional artists. Auditions are private. PREPARATON FOR STRINGS AUDITION Candidates will be shown to a practice room by a student volunteer where they may warm up. The student volunteer will also help with tuning. The candidate will then be called into the String room for a ten-minute audition. Candidates will be asked to play a piece of repertoire that best demonstrates their current level as well as one scale of their choice. Candidates will also be asked to sight read and do ear training. For grade 9, String candidates are required to have previous experience playing the violin, viola, cello or bass and be performing at a minimum of RCM grade 2. If you do not play a string instrument you may audition on piano or guitar, but you must begin instruction on a string instrument immediately after a successful audition. For grade 7, String candidates may audition on violin, viola, cello or bass. If the candidate does not play one of these four, they may audition on another instrument (e.g. piano, guitar) to demonstrate their musical ability. If this is the case and they are successful, they will be assessed in September of their grade 7 year and our Strings teachers will assign one of violin, viola, cello or bass and the student will begin on that instrument in September. INTERVIEW: Candidates will be interviewed by one of the Strings adjudicators. Students will be asked about their interests, personal goals and musical experience. 3 Grade 7 Instrumental Strings Audition Information The String program at Carter is for bowed String instruments, which are: the Violin, the Viola, the Cello, and the Double Bass. You are welcome to audition with any instrument (e.g. Piano or Guitar). There is NO Piano or Guitar program at Cardinal Carter IMPORTANT INFORMATION Your willingness to play any of the bowed string instruments selected for you is an essential requirement. Although we will consider your personal preference and previous experience on a bowed stringed instrument, a final decision on an instrument will be made for you by the CCAA faculty during the first weeks of September. They will assess your physical set up to determine the best fitting instrument for you to succeed on. AUDITION PROCESS Audition for the Grade 7 Strings program is minutes, and will consist of four (4) parts: 1. A prepared, unaccompanied solo performance of one piece of music of your choice at your current level, not exceeding 3 minutes in length. You may be asked to play a few one-octave scales as well. 2. An ear test where you will compare pitches of two notes played on the piano and clap back a 2-4 bar rhythm. A third part of the ear test will consist of singing or humming a short melody that is played for you on the piano. 3. A sight reading test at the Grade 7 entry level see examples provided in this package. 4. We will recommend a suitable bowed string instrument for you to play, and help you find a private music teacher. These lessons are to be paid for by the applicant. A second, follow-up audition will be scheduled in late Spring where you will need to demonstrate your progress on the selected string instrument. There is NO Piano or Guitar program at CCAA. 14 Frequently Asked Questions Q. What is a string instrument? A. At Cardinal Carter, a string instrument is played with a bow. We teach violin, viola, cello and double bass. We do not offer a guitar program. Q. Is it possible to audition with another instrument? A. It is possible to audition with another instrument (e.g. the Piano) however, after a successful audition on the Piano you will be asked to start playing a string instrument. Q. Can I play the Piano at CCAA? A. We do not have a Piano program at our school, however there are many opportunities to play the Piano (e.g. as an accompanist, jazz band, assemblies, liturgies etc.). At CCAA you will play a bowed string instrument in class. Q. How can I prepare for the audition? A. A good way to prepare is to take some private lessons from a specialist teacher on the instrument. Seek help from your school music teacher as well. Program Information *This is an enriched and accelerated music program that focuses on the following: 1. Technical skill development in Classical music. 2. Large ensemble: students will be placed in a level appropriate ensemble in September: each musician is required to participate in the Music department performances. 3. Solo and small ensemble performance skill development: each musician is required to perform a solo in front of his/her peers at the end of second semester. String students will also be placed in a chamber group to perform for the class at the end of semester. 4. Students are required to learn Theory and Historical aspects of music as part of the curriculum. 5. Master Classes with guest artists: Shalom Bard, Etsuko Kimura and music excursions. Q. How can I find a suitable private music teacher to help prepare me for a successful audition? A. We have a list of excellent instrumental specialists who have been working with our students for many years. Please send us an with your request. Q. I am auditioning for Grade 7, and do not play a string instrument yet? What can I do to prepare? A. You may audition by playing another instrument such as the Piano. If your audition is successful, we will assign you to start on a string instrument in September. Q. I am planning to audition for Grade 11. Is there additional information available to help me prepare? A. Please visit our website to access the application package for entry into grade 11 for more detailed information. Q. How many music courses will I take each year? A. Each student obtains two Music credits each year For in class work and a.25 credit for ensemble rehearsals and performances. In Grade 12, there is one mandatory credit and one optional credit in addition to the.25 rehearsal credit.
