JANUARY, 2014 NEWSLETTER WE WISH ALL OF OUR READERS A HAPPY NEW YEAR 2013 IN REVIEW JANUARY January is a time for us to review what has occurred this past year and make plans for the new year was a great year for Candler Field Museum. A review of each month follows. January is typically a slow month for the museum with Georgia weather usually being somewhat questionable was no exception. I want to recognize all of our volunteers. Candler Field Museum is very fortunate to have a large cadre of people who volunteer their time. Without them none of the events that were so successful would have been possible this past year. Without them none of the planned events for 2014 will be possible. My personal thanks to all who have helped us have a very successful FEBRUARY WACO 10 DONATED
This beautiful 1928 OX-5 powered Waco 10 was donated to Candler Field Museum February of this past year. Steve Sachs who lives in Lebanon, TN, recently completed a full restoration on the airplane. Steve donated the Waco so other people can enjoy seeing it on display and flying. ENGINE DONATED
Museum member Don Swords, owner of Don's Dream Machines, built up a mock Continental 65 engine to display at the museum. As you can see from the picture the engine is absolutely perfect. Bill Hammond mounted the engine on the stand shown so that it can be moved and properly displayed. Our thanks to Don for this donation. ENOLA GAY BOMBARDIER VISITS
Dutch Van Kirk, the only surviving crew member on the Enola Gay (the B-29 that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima) visited Candler Field Museum on February 23rd. Dutch spoke to a group of over 300 people who had gathered to meet this famous WWII veteran. After relating the details of the mission that took place on August 6, 1945, Dutch spent a couple of hours autographing his book - True North. MARCH ANNUAL BENEFIT DINNER The museum hosted the annual Benefit Dinner in March. It was a really great time for all. Retired Air Force Colonel William Leachman presented a history of Air Force One along with information regarding the operation of the airplane. Col. Leachman had great slides showing several different airplanes that were used for Air Force One along with pictures of past Presidents flying on the aircraft. It was a great evening.
Col. William Leachman describing an older version of Air Force One. MUSEUM MEMBER PASSES Candler Field Museum member and good friend Carolyn Harr passed away on March 20th. Carolyn was a faithful supporter of the museum and a friend to people everywhere. Carolyn was an excellent painter. She painted two separate pictures
for the museum that are on display. Carolyn's husband Mike Harr remains a faithful supporter of Candler Field Museum. APRIL Griffin modelers Tascar Williams and Clayton Cox put the final touches on the Curtiss Robin model that they donated to Candler Field Museum. The airplane is presently hanging in the hallway at the museum.
The movie "42" was in local theaters beginning April 12th of this year. It is a movie about the life of baseball player Jackie Robinson. Harrison Ford plays Leo Durocher in the movie. Ron Alexander's DC-3 has a couple of short segments in the movie.

The truck pictured above is a 1926 Model TT tanker truck donated by Steve Sachs. JUNE VINTAGE DAY Over 1,500 people attended the Candler Field Museum's annual Vintage Day Event on June 1st. We had over 40 antique automobiles and 20 antique tractors in addition to more than 70 airplanes attend. The weather was perfect. Below are a few pictures from that day. 11 GLIDER DAY SATURDAY JULY 20th THE CANDLER FIELD FLYING CLUB PRESENTED A GLIDER DAY WITH PANDORA AVIATION Phillip and Lynda LaBerge, owners of Pandora Aviation spent the day hopping rides in their glider. Their Piper Pawnee tow plane is pictured above along with the Schleicher Ka-7 glider.
Georgia Magazine featured an article on Candler Field Museum and Barnstormer's Grill in their July issue. The article, written by Andrea Vernot, talks about airport restaurants in the state of Georgia with Barnstormer's Grill getting top billing. A picture of the cover is above. The young people on the cover are Ron Alexander's grandchildren, Grace and Luke Smith. Over 650,000 people receive this magazine. NEW ENTRYWAY TO MUSEUM
Our new museum entryway was renovated during July. There is now a pictorial history of the original Candler Field Airport displayed throughout the foyer of the museum. The display includes large posters along with a large number of original pictures of Candler Field. Thanks to Kathy Socha, Andi Kulp, and Jeremy Clarke for designing and completing the project. AUGUST VISITORS TO CANDLER FIELD In August we had the pleasure of a visit by two young pilots along with their airplanes. Daniel McDevitt and Matt Taylor flew in together - Daniel in his Swift and Matt in his Howard DGA. Daniel is a pilot for Delta Air Lines. Matt is a Marine Corps F-35 pilot. He is a Lt/Col and current deputy commander of the 33rd Operations Group. He is in charge of all the versions of the F-35. Matt is also the son of museum member Larry Taylor.

Eric, along with museum member Tobey Blanton, discussed flying in mountainous areas, aircraft performance in high density environments, use of charts, etc. Over 50 people attended the early morning session.
CIVIL AIR PATROL CHANGE OF COMMAND The Griffin Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol held a change of command ceremony at Candler Field Museum on August 17th. Outgoing commander Captain John Kimberly (pictured on the right) has led the group for the past 4 years. Captain Kimberly has been instrumental in growing the number of cadets to record levels. Captain Robert Burkett (standing behind the podium) is the new commander. The local CAP is very helpful to Candler Field Museum at every event that we host. SEPTEMBER CANDLER FIELD MUSEUM'S RESTORATION SHOP READIED FOR WORK On September 18th, a group of volunteers from EAA Chapter 468 gathered at Candler Field Museum to clean out the museum's restoration room. This room was originally designed to maintain and restore museum aircraft. It was cleaned out to
begin work on several projects involving our Youth Mentorship Program. CANDLER FIELD EXPRESS DC-3 GOES TO OHIO Ron Alexander's DC-3 took a trip to New Philadelphia, Ohio over Labor Day weekend. The airplane hopped rides for a local EAA Chapter Terry Henry was the coordinator who did an outstanding job promoting the rides. The DC-3 carried over 360 passengers in the 3 day time period with 36 separate flights.
Flight attendant Karis Bolden in the center, Ron Alexander on the left and Terry Henry on the right. TRIPLE TREE FLY-IN Each year Pat Hartness hosts a great fly-in at his private airstrip just south of Greenville, SC. This year was no exception. The weather was perfect and the attendance was high. Close to 700 airplanes attended including our DC-3. Picture taken by Boyd King from the Triple Tree control tower.
FLABOB FLYING CIRCUS Over a hundred beautiful antiques gathered in perfect fall weather for Flabob s second annual Flying Circus. Flabob Airport is our sister airport located in Riverside, CA. The Flying Circus is a unique event, one of the few where the crowd is able to wander around the airplanes in their parking area throughout the day. OCTOBER PEACH STATE AIRPORT FOUNDER PASSES
Carl Hoffman passed away on October 1st. Carl founded and developed the Peach State Airport. He literally carved a runway out of a peach orchard. He worked tirelessly to remove trees and clear the area so a runway could be built. The first airplane landed in 1968 on the airstrip. Carl later developed a very popular glider port on the airport. EAA CHAPTER 468 MAKES DONATION EAA Chapter 468 members meet regularly in Candler Field Museum's library. The library needed some window treatments so the chapter members decided to finance the placement of very nice curtains and shades for the room.. This is a great enhancement to the library area and our special thanks to all members of EAA Chapter 468 for this donation.
NOVEMBER 7th ANNUAL VETERAN'S DAY PROGRAM Our 7th Annual Veteran's Day Program was one of our best yet. The weather was perfect and we had a crowd of over 1,000 people attend the event. Pictures of the day are below.
