1 CHAPTER REPORTS Southeast Chapter Chair: Mary Ellen Myers Reporter: Margery Sanford Photographer: Howard Sanford May 20-22, 2016 Plantation, FL Plantation, FL, near Fort Lauderdale, FL, became the scene for the Southeast Chapter Spring meeting. The fun-filled weekend began with two wonderful open houses. Diane and Joe Garrison hosted one and showed their pristine collection of treasures including a number of fully restored Wurlitzer 78 RPM pre- and post-world War II jukeboxes and coin-operated musical machines. The other open house was hosted by Bob Smith whose fantastic pieces include several cylinder and disc boxes, an organ clock, an organ painting, an upright Duo Art piano and an Arburo dance organ, not to mention the exquisite stained glass lamps. At Saturday s business meeting, we learned our chapter now numbers 118 music box lovers. Jack Hostetler, of The Villages, FL, was nominated by our chapter as a candidate for the Joe and Diane Garrison with an early 78 RPM jukebox during their open house. Diane Garrison demonstrates making a phone call from a restored Bell Telephone oak phone booth in the Garrison home. 2 Joe Garrison with his Regina 15-inch disc changer. Roehl Ambassador Award. The winner of this award will be announced at the MBSI Annual Meeting in Minneapolis this fall. Everyone celebrated the Dr. Joe Bailey Award 2016 being given to our ever-popular treasurer and trustee, Clay Witt. A liaison committee was selected to avoid date conflicts with other music group meetings. This committee consists of Craig Darlak, Moe Goldy and Howard Sanford. Our dates to keep in mind report started with Jul. 19 for the intergenerational summer camp day held at The Villages, FL, (one of the largest retirement communities in the U.S.). This is to be followed by Jul. 20 when a mechanical music expo will be held in the same town at an independent living facility to bring back happy memories for residents. Oct. 20 will see us at The Villages to enjoy Octoberfest. Over the weekend of Nov. 4-6 the chapter meeting will be held in Savannah, GA, under the able guidance of David Oppenheim. Jan , the chapter will hold a joint meeting in Sarasota, FL, with COAA (Carousel Owners Association of America) and Circus Summit. Members are encouraged to attend and bring guests to all events. The meeting was followed by an interesting lecture by Moe Goldy on the intricacies of selling collections through auction houses. After a small mart and lunch, the group reconvened at Pam and Joel Jancko s fabulous private backyard museum. What a treat it was to hear Joel explain the many exhibits and have Marty Persky Marty Persky tells the tale of a Seeburg H found in the Jancko s backyard musuem. Marty Persky also told members about the Imhof & Mukle orchestrion in the Janckos collection. July/August 2016 MECHANICAL MUSIC 49

5 Joel and Pam Jancko hosted another open house during the weekend. They are shown here with their Weber Unika in the background. Steve Brittain plays the Mighty Wurlitzer Opsu 1616 in the Jancko s huge concert room. show all the exciting musical treats. The highlight of the afternoon was an organ concert on the Mighty Wurlitzer opus 1616 by our own Steve Brittain who included a special music pictorial tribute to our long-term and much beloved member, Lindsay Walker. On Saturday night a wonderful dinner was held at a famous Dania Beach, FL, steakhouse, Tropical Acres. Following that, an open house was hosted by Margery and Howard Sanford. Guests enjoyed the 101 key Mortier, the Wurlitzer 146 carousel organ, Ramey Banjo, one of kind wooden conductor/accordion complex, and several other roll and disc boxes. Sunday morning, the group met at Peter Klein s in Coconut Grove to see his many automata, musical clocks and cylinder boxes. So ended a perfect weekend with plans to renew friendships once again at The Villages this summer and at the MBSI Annual Meeting in Minnesota Aug. 31-Sept. 3. Do encourage friends and relatives to join in the fun. Mary Ellen Myers presents the Dr. Joe Bailey Award to chapter treasurer Clay Witt.
